NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE. MARIE FIRE SERVICES

*************************

Fire Services is excited to announce that, beginning March 11, 2013, open air burning permits can now be renewed or obtained online.

With the open air burning season fast approaching, interested applicants can visit here [and click on "My Sault Ste. Marie" under "Quick Links" on the right side of the page].

Please be reminded that, in order to set up an account, the applicant must have their roll and serial numbers from their tax bill for the property in question.

The applicant will be required to fill out a few simple forms and be permitted to charge associated new permit or renewal fees to their Visa or Master Card.

All new permits obtained online will be subject to an onsite inspection prior to approval and activation.

“Fire Services is pleased to offer this new service,” explains Fire Chief Marcel Provenzano. “Being able to renew or purchase open air burn permits online is a significant step forward in creating efficiencies for both the Fire Services and more importantly, the public wishing to burn. This new system is a fast and convenient way to renew permits around the clock.”

Chief Provenzano would also like to remind the public to adhere to the open air burning approval guidelines.

"Burning responsibly is paramount to achieving and maintaining open air burn approval. Fire Services remains diligent in enforcing all violations of open air burning.”.

Open air burning permits can also be obtained or renewed, by calling Fire Services at 705-949-9898, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

does anybody know if we need a permit to barbecue this year or is that OK with Myers? Why don`t they just raise our taxes and skip the bullshit!!!

Government has no authority over Mans's "quest for fire"...either legally or ethically. It's a Government trait to suck money out of the people(hence municipal bylaws). Fire is an "inherent RITE" fundamental to survival and the clowns in a/the municipal office think that they are now "Gods" in control of fire. Fire is a means of survival regardless of cultural advancement...out of our lives parasites.

I gave up buying fishing and hunting licences due to the gun registry and all the regulations, upcoming changes in the number of fish your allowed to catch, you need to bring a lawyer with you. Sick and tired, now fire permits. I quit that too.

I agree with all you guys commenting. This is just rediculous. Getting a fire permit isnt going to stop fires from happening.. It will happen regardless when people go camping, start a fire and get wasted with booze. A fire permit isnt going to prevent that.

complain we will but none will draw a line and take a stand and burn our camp fires with out buying that legal piece of toilet paper eh...IF we fought the 1812 war the way we stand up against city hall then i guess we now would all be eek "yankees"but on the other hand they do have less big brother dicating how to wipe our ass
Victor R. 3/12/2013 8:45:31 AM Report

I imagine without some kind of permit system, outdoor burning could get out of hand. After all this is a city, not a campground. There are persons that are sensitive to smoke (asthma, COPD, etc)that need to be protected from careless burning. It's unfortunate there is a fee, but open air burning is regulated by the Ontario Fire Code and the city has to enforce it, and it does cost us money to run a city.
LAWL 3/12/2013 3:06:53 PM Report

LOL, people thanking the city for adding an online way of getting screwed. I love how slaves think.
LAWL 3/12/2013 3:10:25 PM Report

Do not worry Alystr. The carbon tax that Australia just implemented is coming to Canada shortly. The tax covers how much we breathe and methane we expel. Implemented by a world bank that is behind the EU. Enjoy...
