Hayes silent on this. Another Northern MP isn't

Tuesday, March 05, 2013   by: Rick McGee

SooToday.com has reported previously on the Harper government's intention to close a Northwestern Ontario freshwater research facility this month if no operator is found.

The Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) does long-term analysis of pollutants' affects on freshwater ecosystems.

It is the only research resource of its kind in the world.

The first article noted that Sault MP Bryan Hayes did not respond to an invitation from SooToday.com to comment.

Hayes' views were sought because of water's importance for all Northerners, including those living in his riding.

At the time, Hayes was a member of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.

Related coverage in early January included a news release and letter (a copy of which was sent to all Members of Parliament) from scientists attending the Canadian Conference for Fisheries Research in Windsor.

Today, Bruce Hyer, the independent MP for Thunder Bay-Superior North, issued the following news release:

Northern Ontario rally to save Experimental Lakes Area

'Save ELA Day' proclaimed by City of Kenora, City of Dryden as less than a month remains to find new ELA operator

KENORA — Residents of Northwestern Ontario gathered with scientists in Kenora, Sioux Lookout and Dryden today on “Save ELA Day” to hold public meetings on stopping the federal government’s announced closure of the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA).

“People in Northern Ontario are extremely concerned,” said Independent MP Bruce Hyer (Thunder Bay-Superior North). “There are only weeks left for the Conservative government to find a suitable operator to take over our Experimental Lakes Area, before we lose it forever. This world-renowned research facility is a source of pride for our region, responsible for breakthroughs that have helped prevent acid rain and phosphate pollution, amongst many others.”

As many as 16 municipalities in Northern Ontario have passed resolutions calling on the federal government to reverse its decision to close the ELA: Ignace, Dryden, Kenora, Lake of the Woods, Atikokan, Chapple, Dorion, Gillies, Hornepayne, Neebing, Rainy River, Red Rock, Sioux Lookout, Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, Terrace Bay, and Thunder Bay.

Hyer was in Kenora for a 5:30 p.m. ELA dinner and meeting at Knox United Church, where he added: “I know Kenora MP Greg Rickford was invited to the last meeting his constituents held on the ELA, but declined to attend. He has also refused to introduce their petitions on the ELA in Parliament. I hope he changes his attitude and accepts their invite to tonight’s public meeting.”

“Canada's ELA is the most innovative water research facility in the world, and if we lose it, we lose our ability to predict human impacts on lake ecosystems and prevent damage.” said Dr. Jules Blais, president of the Society of Canadian Limnologists. “The Canadian government is terminating a 44-year monitoring record for air and water at a time when the environment is experiencing unprecedented impacts from climate warming, invasive species, and toxic chemicals like mercury. It’s our hope that these efforts in Kenora will help persuade the government to finally listen to Canadians and scientists alike, and not abandon its investment in ELA.”

"The whole ELA situation is a poster child of what is wrong with governance based on ideology rather than reason,” said Hyer. “It illustrates today’s excessive party control and how MPs can represent Conservative interests to their constituents rather than constituents' interests in Ottawa. It’s also penny-wise and pound foolish: paying up to $50 million to close a $2 million per year facility – and in the process costing taxpayers and industry billions for future legal claims, environmental cleanups, and health costs. Finally, closing the ELA is Exhibit A in the government’s assault on reason, killing any science that is inconvenient. You simply can’t run a country by sticking your head in the sand.”

mallet 3/5/2013 9:23:44 PM Report

Prehaps someone can answer why it would cost 50mil to close the place but only 2 mil to run it... Is the place so polluted that there has to be remedial work done ??
Wisenheimer 3/5/2013 10:04:51 PM Report

Cutting is always difficult, and getting back to surplus is a bitch. Ask Paul Martin.
BIG BROTHER 3/5/2013 10:20:55 PM Report

Inconvenient truths!! Harper's Part 2 of his gag order. The front line assault...MP's, shut-up. The back bench assault....scientists, shut-up!!
Retreaded 3/5/2013 10:38:43 PM Report

HAYES IS N DIFFERENT THAN WHEN HE WAS ON COUNCIL...we voted him in.
Prrrrrrr 3/6/2013 7:31:16 AM Report

Hayes is simply enjoying the position. Nothing ventured nothing gained...we'll see if he holds the seat next time around.
In my opinion...The whole PC government are a bunch of sneaks! Harper is borderline communist in the way he is ruling this country.
He's taking away freedoms "DAILY"
The only people making him accountable are the First Nations and he's trying real hard to ignore them as well...Wake up Canada! Get rid of this sinister/secretive power hungry Harper Group before it's too late. They are NOT representing the people of this country, they are surpressing us!
AceOfBass 3/6/2013 7:32:24 AM Report

This is one of those "Make Work Projects" that needs to be cut.Sure the Dippers would be complaining it is what they do best.Keep up the good work MP Hayes.
OMGWTF 3/6/2013 8:12:53 AM Report

This is the Harper government's way of making sure the environmental controls they eliminated in the last budget aren't measured for their effect on our water supply. No science = no reason to stop expansion. Our water supply is the most important resource we have. Harper is playing with our lives here, not just jobs that really mean something.
Kevin5069 3/6/2013 8:12:56 AM Report

Since he was elected, he has been silent on almost everything. Maybe he will have some comments closer to next election time...
Cashmier 3/6/2013 8:31:49 AM Report

OMGWTF - spot on. This closure has been bothing me since it was announced last year. I could understand if the facility and research was redundant, but it isn't. ELA is the premier research facility for the study of pollution in fresh water lakes. Literally world renowned - which means we are actually IN a leadership position in the scientific community. This decision will result in a terrible blow to our international reputation. So dissapointed - this isn't the type of program they should be cutting.
learningaswego 3/6/2013 8:57:37 AM Report

Let's see something really helpful to the public.
Like, what was the total annual cost for this research? What did we (the taxpayers) get for it? Was it considered good enough value for Canadian taxpayers' money? Probably not - otherwise they would be keeping it.
Could the same research be done by a non-government organization (like a university) - at much less cost, and likely better (as government bureaucracies rarely are efficient or good value for taxpayers' money? Would this save the Canadian taxpayers a lot of money, if it were done differently or by another qualified organization?
learningaswego 3/6/2013 9:02:22 AM Report

Maybe this was mostly just another inefficient, limited value for the investment, government bureaucracy?

I said it before, Hayes will likely be a one term MP.
