Targeted Initiative for Older Workers offers unique training opportunity

(March 5, 2013) - Employment Solutions is once again delivering the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers (TIOW) program, a special initiative funded by Employment Ontario and the Government of Canada, designed to help unemployed older workers increase their ability to find and keep a job in the local economy.

In addition to providing assistance with job search activities, resume preparation and interview skills, participants in the TIOW program this spring may have a unique opportunity to gain training and work placement experience in the golf course industry, just in time for the upcoming golf season.

Selected participants will receive training to work in a variety of positions central to the operation of a golf course and will benefit from work placement experience on several local courses.

This unique program is being offered in response to a need identified by local employers for trained golf course employees this upcoming season.

In addition to employment opportunities on local golf courses, other employment options may be available for TIOW program participants.

Older workers participating in the TIOW program will find it to be a great opportunity to upgrade their skills and help increase their ability in obtaining employment in the current labour market.

To qualify for the TIOW program and this exciting training opportunity, individuals must be between 50 and 64 years old, unemployed (retired, laid off) and be looking for part time or full time work.

Interested applicants can contact Debi MacKay at Employment Solutions, 705-945-0705, ext. 4273

This Employment Ontario program is funded in part by the Government of Canada.

Why not just lower the cost of living for them...give them a break?? Seriously! I understand that paying the pension aged people to return to work maybe give them a chance to return to work to alleviate the financial burden...but didn't they work enough?? I mean their generation were probably the last of the real labor era of hard workers! ...and for a fraction of what me make now! I am pretty sure the last thing on their minds is going back to school then finding out there are no jobs!! Sounds like a waste of money that can be put to better use! What about Pension vouchers or coupons!!

...and when golf season is over?...
De Couture 3/5/2013 12:55:37 PM Report

Stupid @#!!* government!!! Instead of giving training for older workers; JCP's and Internships to the cry-baby graduates, why not help Generation X, who are bearing children right now and are bearing the brunt of all taxes AND ARE SEVERELY UNEMPLOYED and EDUCATED right now! It kills me when I read stupid @!$# like this and our generation is left behind - AGAIN!I guess it's just easier to help out the minority demographic ages rather than tackle a REAL issue here. MEH!

Did they check the statistics and see that the golf industry is loosing membership each year and is struggling. They don't need more staff...they need more golfers.

This sounds to me like Mcguinty got some more money from Harper just before he skipped out. Now after the Northern Cabinet meeting Ms Wynne is trying to get brownie points from it. What a crock.
Over_the_hill 3/5/2013 2:04:22 PM Report

Hmmmmm! What would I do on a golf course? Oh, right, I'm too old to qualify. Darn. Well, I guess I'll just have to be a baby-boomer and get on my many toys and play. Oh yeh! I don't have any toys. Just barely making it with the payments for living. Oh well, I'll think of something to do, like they say, I'm a baby-boomer. Yeah !!! Now, what was I going to do and who stole my golf balls?
newcon 3/5/2013 2:38:40 PM Report

I'm perplexed. Will the elderly segment of society be instructed as to how to carry a golf bag or will they be receiving training on the actual construction of the clubs that go into the
bag that somebody must learn to carry?
I still can't figure out how we made it this far as a species given all of these government programs we must sign up for before we're employable .

Guess I better check that out soon, since I'm 63, cut off is 64. Or maybe the government will pay me to golf since a lot of folk's have left the courses. "Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty four" Guess that's the musical era I grew up in.

what a pile of dung let the old retire give the chance for the younger generation to get off the xbox and start working and contributing to society. Make it easier for young "Canadian students" to get into a school and a career.
Ricatoni 3/5/2013 4:24:15 PM Report

Take 3/5/2013 4:37:59 PM Report

By giving older people the jobs at the golf courses, it will take away the jobs from the students.
