OTTAWA - With the promise of warmer temperatures lingering in the forecast, people across the province are already turning their thoughts to a season filled with patios, barbecues, road trips with the windows down – and potholes.
Many road users are all too aware that the harsh winter climate in our region guarantees that potholes are a regular part of spring.
To help avoid costly damage that potholes can cause to vehicles, CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) offers the following tips for motorists to keep in mind this spring:
• Check your tire pressure regularly. Keeping a consistent tire pressure can go a long way towards minimizing pothole damage to your wheels and tires. Remember that pressure readings are most accurate before the car is driven; driving causes the tires to heat up, increasing the pressure and changing the reading
• Don’t swerve to avoid a pothole. Swerving can result in the front wheel of your vehicle hitting the pothole at an angle, causing more damage than if it is hit head-on
• Avoid sudden braking when you are approaching a pothole. Braking transfers the car’s weight to the front tires, thereby increasing the possibility of damage
• If your tire does lose air after an unfortunate pothole encounter, when it is safe to do so pull over to the side of the road in order to minimize the chance of wheel damage. Always keep a properly maintained spare tire in your vehicle, and have your CAA membership card handy in case you require roadside assistance.
With these helpful tips from CAANEO you can prepare yourself - and your vehicle - for the inevitable potholes this spring, and mitigate unnecessary hassle and damage.

Poshkitty 3/4/2013 2:24:47 PM ReportNot sure whats worse...potholes or ice chunks??! This girl is sticking to the main roads! :)
JudyJ 3/4/2013 3:50:33 PM ReportThe good news is that at least our pot holes are just that and not sink holes. Remember the grass is always greener.
rockbottom 3/4/2013 4:09:24 PM ReportWish that I was half as good at finding the holes on the golf course, as I am at finding these Putt Holes.
1130 3/4/2013 4:21:32 PM ReportHow about the city let us get metal pails of ashphalt and fill them in ourselves we all know where most of them are apperently they don`t.
nitrocircus199 3/4/2013 5:03:32 PM ReportSo they want us to hit pot holes dead on and get flat tires hahaha ya sure I'm gonna wreck my tires at 400 bucks a piece, every strut sold the city should cover taxes lol just my thought
Beej 3/4/2013 5:15:32 PM ReportI thought they were bad on the stretch from the Walmart/Soo Mill entrance to the hospital entrance along Great Northern Road, but then I experienced something much worse..
How do you avoid potholes when the entire road is made up of them?
Anyone drive down London Street in the last couple of days? OMG!!
I'll bet there are several more just like it, my poor car.
thesharr 3/4/2013 5:24:14 PM ReportI bet the road to Sunnyside Beach is nice and smooth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
iamtc 3/4/2013 5:44:49 PM ReportThe city of Sault Ste Marie Board of works fix pot holes all the time we have some of the best streets in the world safe easy to drive down and no snow banks to cause concern they do good work.
moem 3/4/2013 5:52:36 PM ReportIamtc
Sarcasm? Or do you just not drive anywhere? The banks are dangerously high on many many streets including main roads! The potholes are ridiculous, and yes London street is really bad!! The city needs to repair some of these roads especially the main ones.
Kishido 3/4/2013 6:13:50 PM ReportOur tax dollars NOT at work
robbdmc 3/4/2013 6:45:45 PM Reportjust because it isnt a main road why has lorna turned into a one lane...must be the great road conditions
guestwho 3/4/2013 7:06:10 PM ReportSo this news bit is CAA`s release ,what a joke!! I always drive around potholes(that`s what a steering wheel is for),always keep air pressure lower during pothole season=`s smoother ride and less damage to front end parts, avoid side streets if possible due to good city maintenance, most importantly,if possible stay home during spring thaw and get drunk!!
Sault_ont 3/4/2013 7:34:57 PM Reportwell to solve everyone problem of pot holes on the street if you don't want to drive anywhere then ride your bike all year round I used to drive my bike in the winter think of when vernes hardware used to have the vernes bicycle ice race during the bon soo a few years ago they did that with like normal mountain bikes
bsa 3/4/2013 8:16:45 PM ReportAll I have to say is there are some good coments but the people that trash the City are wild. It's called snow people, deal with it. If you dont like it get out there and do it your self. Ohh wait you would rather sit at home without a job and that word again trash the City. I'm sure where ever you work its perfect lol. The City is doing a fine job!!! Keep up the good work and for you losers that have nothing better to do take a look at yourself in the mirror and say life is to short to worry about minnor things. Suck it up, and deal with it!!!!!!!!!!
robbdmc 3/4/2013 8:57:50 PM Reportsounds like some people in here work for the city or contra cted to remove snow but are too lazy to do so. Probably why they won't be needing them next year.
MikeQ 3/4/2013 10:25:07 PM ReportSummer 2012 - Bought a small car to be economical, save on gas, be a bit greener.
Winter 2012 - Bought a 4x4 Dodge ram cuz I figured out that being economical in this city means not being able to get out of your subdivision or even driveway due to the massive snow banks that get plowed in. Now driving the 4x4 once the snow is gone, because the pot holes are so deep I'm worried my little kia will fall into the centre of the earth.
Kia $15,000, Dodge ram $25,000, having to maneuever through 50 pot holes to get to work...Priceless... for everything else, Mastercard!
jojo12345 3/5/2013 2:38:43 AM Reportsault for you
crashed13 3/5/2013 8:00:19 AM Report@guestwho
I.m the same way. I look ahead, zig zag and straddle those pot holes like its a video now. Its amazing how easy they are to avoid when you look ahead and at the road.
TFinn 3/5/2013 12:50:27 PM Reportcrashed13 3/5/2013 8:00:19 AM
The truth is the roads in the Soo do need addressing. There are some streets and roads that are pitiful at best.
F150Guy 3/5/2013 11:12:24 PM ReportIf they don't want us to swerve to avoid potholes. Then I will send the city a quote for new tires, rims, ball joints and alignments for the next year.
