Deadly tragedy in Elliot Lake returns to national prominence
Monday, March 04, 2013 by: SooToday.com Staff

Elliot Lake is again becoming the focus of widespread attention.
The process to determine why the Algo Centre Mall collapsed there last June begins today.
Two women - Lucie Aylwin, 37, and Doloris Perizzolo, 74 - died in the tragedy.
Several lawsuits are being pursued by the families of the deceased.
The public inquiry will also consider if emergency response efforts were satisfactory.
Commissioner Paul Belanger's final report and recommendations are expected in January.
An e-book about the doomed mall has been written and is available through Maclean's.
"Doomed: The Untold Story Behind the Collapse of the Elliot Lake Mall" claims the tragedy's roots date back three decades.
Among other things, the writer reports that the original architect argued against building rooftop parking over the stores.
In addition, the engineering firm that inspected the Algo Centre mall 10 weeks before the collapse and declared it “structurally sound” was about to close after being disciplined.
Bob Nazarian's Eastwood Mall Inc. owned the mall when tragedy struck.
He has insisted that he is without blame.
A new mall in Elliot Lake is expected to be finished by the the end of the year.

newcon 3/4/2013 10:59:23 AM ReportIf people only knew the details here...but then again the press couldn't even source out the facts or maybe in all of it's arrogant wisdom the press just thought people wouldn't know the difference between fact and emotional hyperbole. There is more to this disaster than just the collapse of a roof.
Do YOU feel safe under any roof?be it a commercial, industrial, institutional complex.

Tag33&1/3rd 3/4/2013 11:12:15 AM ReportYes--definatley more! I hung out in that mall when I was 17--30 some years ago..
Tag33&1/3rd 3/4/2013 11:12:59 AM ReportOops 20 some years ago! Lol
anapeg 3/4/2013 1:58:26 PM Report Whom was deemed "responsible" when the roof in our own mall caved in a few years back?

Yet another predictable comment..
"If people only knew the details here".
Hmmm. If only there was a way for someone to present said facts on the internet. If only there was some forum or comment section where you post the details for everyone to see. Obviously these "details" must be so important, it's too bad there's no where you can post them.
Although, the fact that you consider sootoday "the press" is amusing...
Tag33&1/3rd 3/4/2013 4:40:34 PM ReportACR originally owned/built Algo-didnt they also build mall here?
Tom_Bom 3/4/2013 6:46:22 PM ReportAll I know is it's pretty lame when the emergency crew doesn't go in FOR FIVE DAYS because they deemed it "too dangerous".
If you have to wait 5 days to save someone... I hate to say it but after 5 days, thats too long to wait to expect to save anyone. You know?
If the emergency crew's aren't trained to responded in a timely fashion in the event of an emergency, we really need to re-think our emergency strategies here.
Tag33&1/3rd 3/4/2013 7:25:39 PM ReportTo be clear--they heard one of them alive!! The person was tapping!!--then they halted search---for way too long!!
newcon 3/4/2013 9:04:51 PM ReportIt wasn't five days before rescue crews got there but it was five days before the demolition began. Rescue crews were mobilized 9.5 hrs after the collapse. What people don't know is as to
why the "effective" emergency crew was not contacted earlier???The collapse occurred at approx. 2:30pm +- and a call to the proper response team wasn't made until 11:10pm that evening. The high priced HUSRA Team was totally inadequate and ill-equipped. FYI there was never a "robotic arm" involved in the demolition only an excavator with an articulating boom equipped with a shear, proof that the media was totally ignorant through this entire event. But people should feel relieved in knowing that the Ontario Provincial Police Team did very well...and that is all that will be said for now.
