Shawn Desman breaks in the Machine Shop. Literally (27 photos)

Saturday, March 02, 2013   by: Donna Hopper

It may have been the handsome Shawn Desman and the stunning Anjulie that drew a crowd of 400 last night, but it was the venue itself that stole the show.

Hosted by Riversedge Developments at The Machine Shop located on the former St. Marys Paper site, this concert was the beginning of what will hopefully be a long and entertaining relationship with eager Sault concert fans.

Both performers gave the predominately tween audience more than its money's worth, as Anjulie met and took photos with fans at intermission, and Desman hosted an hour-long meet-and-greet with devotees prior to the performance.

A number of attendees told SooToday.com that both Canadian pop stars were extremely gracious and friendly.

And despite a few inconveniences - concert goers had to use very chilly outdoor porta potties, and a few windows reportedly shattered during sound check (the situation was quickly remedied with spray foam insulation) - the venue demonstrated its incredible potential much to the delight of us older folk in the crowd.

Last night's performance was a fantastic experience as a whole, and the perfect way to show off and break-in the Sault's newest concert venue.

Any idea of what the capacity would/could be for a concert there?
Donna Hopper 3/2/2013 10:51:25 PM Report

The venue can accommodate audiences sized 250 to 600. More information about the development as whole can be found here

Awesome, thanks.
zartan 3/3/2013 4:33:32 AM Report

won't fit less than 250?
SimsDrum 3/3/2013 7:43:27 AM Report

Did they already change the name. I thought it was called the mill?
Wobbler 3/3/2013 8:24:39 AM Report

SimsDrum:
The building is called the Machine Shop. The property itself is the Mill.
Maria Catena 3/3/2013 8:58:11 AM Report

The reason they called this venue "the Machine Shop" is because when the paper mill was operating that was their machine shop.

It's a sad day when people know more about their entertainment than they do about a trade...such as "Machine Tool &Die". There was more talent when the place was in operation as a Machine Shop than there is now as a...whatever.

Great photos Donna, as usual!

You said:

It's a sad day when someone can't applaud the fact that something is being done with this property, rather than it being left in a state of disrepair or being torn down altogether! Riverside Developments is even keeping and restoring some of our city's heritage buildings.

I say let's all be positive about the coming changes at the "Old Paper Mill", that will also bring some much needed jobs to Sault Ste. Marie.

Well said Wobbler!

Newcon has a hard time being positive about anything though, no use trying to argue with him!

Could certainly be a fun and unique venue, one that might attract many different musicians based on that uniqueness! There are a lot of great Canadian musicians in all genres of music out there, it would be great to have a fun outdoor venue like that to showcase the talent to SSM!

"It's a sad day when people know more about their entertainment than they do about a trade"

When has this ever not been the case in modern history? Do you think more people knew about woodworking than The Beatles? Get a grip, you just sound like a cranky, stuck-in-the-past person.
newcon 3/5/2013 10:57:45 AM Report

"stuck in the past"??? I'm worried about the future...and my pension(s). I worked for the past 40years to help pad the social system and I want to make damn sure that what is owing me when I retire will be there when I'm ready...and that means people must work to sustain these entitlments. Does anybody in this forum actually know how an economy works???from the context of 90% of these comments I highly doubt it.
And as a point of interest people in Sault S. Marie should realize that if not for the JUSTIFIED invasion of Iraq by George W. Bush our steel mill would've been gone....GONE.
