University researchers share their vision of life in 2030
SUDBURY - What will life be like in 2030?
It could be that the mining industry will have embraced renewable energy, that your health may be deeply linked to your personal electronics, or thattrains will once again dominate Northern Ontario travel.
These are visions of the future that researchers from Ontario universities will share with the public at Life in 2030: Discuss the future with those who are creating it, a free public event that will be held March 7 in Sudbury.
Hosted by Laurentian University, in partnership with Algoma, Nipissing and McMaster universities, this event is part of a series of Research Matters discussions taking place across Ontario.
"The research work of our universities is crucially important, as it has the potential to improve every aspect of day-to-day life," said Patrice Sawyer, vice-president of research at Laurentian University. "We welcome this opportunity for researchers and non-academics to discuss their hopes and expectations for our shared future."
Moderated by Markus Schwabe, host of CBC Radio's Morning North, four researchers will discuss what life will be like in 2030 through the prism of their research:
-
Graydon Raymer (Nipissing) - Having heart problems? There's an app for that.
-
James Dunn (McMaster) - Global and local issues will both matter more to health and well-being.
-
Linda Savory Gordon (Algoma) - Northern Ontario train travel will be faster, cheaper and greener than cars or planes.
-
Dean Millar (Laurentian) - Canada's mines will have slashed production costs by embracing renewables.
"Our universities are home to some of the most prestigious, varied, and collaborative research environments in the world," said Harley d'Entremont, vice-president academic and research at Nipissing University. "University researchers are shaping the future through ideas and innovation, and we are excited to share this wealth of ideas."
Life in 2030 is a Research Matters event that will be held at Science North (Vale Cavern) in Sudbury, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.
Those interested in attending are asked to register here.
Research Matters events allow Ontarians to discuss emerging challenges and opportunities with researchers who are helping to shape the future, as well as voice their opinions and ideas in conversation with some of the province's leading thinkers.
There are five Research Matters events taking place across the province with 21 Ontario universities participating.
A January event in Kitchener launched the series, with three subsequent events happening in Oshawa on April 3, St. Catharines on April 16 and Toronto on May 9.
The Research Matters campaign also includes a blog and social media opportunities for Ontarians to engage with university research.
Visit the Research Matters website for details.

newcon 2/28/2013 9:30:10 PM ReportCanada will sink into economic abyss if it elects another trudeau...or any of the socialist/communist parties left of reality. One only needs to see how obama has devestated the United States of America. As a point of interest obama's "sequester" was a conjured lie. This is what the left does to influence voters. 2030 will be a nightmare if the Private Sector is hamstrung by heavy handed unions and excessive regulation...much as it is now.

Mr. Poster 2/28/2013 9:59:52 PM ReportI will be 90 then....will they still have the Davey Home? Will pennies make a comeback? Will Mayor Debbie still be in charge? Will Flyhawk once again teach creative writing?
seen_your 3/1/2013 2:41:21 AM Report@newcon, need I remind you of Bush and his war on Iraq because of WMD's? The right lies just as much as the left. Can you not see that both sides of the political spectrum are controlled by lobbyists? Canada is no different. Business comes first in North America, nothing else matters, where will we be in 2030? I just hope we get to see 2030.

newcon 3/1/2013 9:25:24 AM ReportBlame it on Bush...blah, blah, blah. People still haven't clued into how dangerous liberalism is...2030 should see the end of all of those dependant on "BIG GOVERNMENT"...LIBERAL GOVERNMENT. As a point of interest when Bush was in office Iran, Syria and N.Korea were a little more humble and also the world didn't have to stomach what is now known as "the muslim brotherhood" in Egypt.

LAWL 3/1/2013 1:13:22 PM ReportThought I might add that after this housing bubble in the Sault crashes, we may be just getting ourselves back to normal living. For the ones that are still around anyways...
