MP Hayes fights for the will of his constituents to preserve existing electoral boundaries of Sault Ste. Marie and area
OTTAWA - On Monday, February 25, 2013, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario tabled its report in the House of Commons.
Bryan Hayes, MP for Sault Ste. Marie has filed an objection letter with the House of Commons Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs, accompanied by a petition of MP signatures in support of MP Hayes’ fight to preserve his electoral boundaries as is.
The revised boundaries would see a number of communities transferred from the riding of Sault Ste. Marie to Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing.
The electoral district of Sault Ste. Marie would be composed of the boundaries from the 2003 representation order, less the Townships of Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional, Laird, Tarbutt and Tarbutt Additional, Johnson, St. Joseph, Jocelyn, Hilton, and Plummer Additional, the Village of Hilton Beach, the Town of Bruce Mines, and the geographic Township of Aberdeen.
The revised electoral boundary of Sault Ste. Marie would consist of a population of 82,052, down from 89,028, which is 22.75 percent below the provincial quota.
“Is it my understanding that when the commission held the additional public hearing in Sault Ste. Marie to give the public an opportunity to comment on the revised Proposal, everyone who spoke, with the exception of one person, was opposed to the revised proposal. Presenters suggested that, if the Commission needed to find more population, it should be taken from the Sudbury area,” said MP Hayes. “As such, it is important for me to continue advocating for the will of my constituents by fighting for the existing boundaries to remain unchanged.”
MP Hayes will be invited to appear before the Committee to defend his position within 30 days of the March 27 deadline for filing objections to the new proposal.

NOS2002 2/28/2013 11:52:47 AM ReportThe federal gov't over spent on their military budget so now they need to implement cost cutting measures by reducing federal funding to cities like ours..
theprotector 2/28/2013 11:57:59 AM ReportI dont get it, this man has let 75 good paying federal jobs walk out of this city and has done nothing. His govenment is paying almost 50,000. per employee to move them. That is money out of our community, these families have to move to Toronto! No one cares!!! It would be different if the jobs were cut but there not, just moved out of town.

Soo-ite1 2/28/2013 2:11:16 PM ReportCloudy, grow up.
What at all does Flanagan have to do with this story? You seem to be implying that his comments somehow carry over to all Conservatives... Shows just how biased you are.
While Flanagan is disgusting for saying what he did, to imply that his comments speak for the party solely because he USED to be affiliated is absolute ridiculousness.
sitka_archie 3/2/2013 8:56:07 PM ReportTypical Conservative bashers. No facts no real arguments, just foot stomping and name calling.
The constituents east of the Sault are largely Conservative, while the Manitoulin-Kap and Scuzbury riding are NDP.
Read between the lines and figure out why Hayes, and the eastern constituents are opposed to the shift. Hayes IS there MP. The easterners don't want a dipper running their riding....
