OPP seek help to identify Wawa curling rink vandals

Wednesday, February 27, 2013   by: Staff

WAWA, ON – On February 25, 2013 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Wawa Detachment were advised of damage that had been done to the curling rink ice surface at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre.
Sometime over the weekend the culprits used the curling rocks to damage the boards along the ice surface and then caused a six-inch long hole in the middle of the rink.
Damage costs were estimated to be approximately $500.

OPP were provided with surveillance video taken inside the Community Centre.

From the video a total of eight suspects were viewed and at this time four have been identified.

It is believed that they are from the Timmins area.

Follow-up investigation is currently being done with the assistance of the OPP South Porcupine Crime Unit.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers.

If you have any information regarding any criminal activity, call 705-942-7867 or 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS); submit an e-tip from The Crime Stopper’s web-site at or send a text to keyword SSM to the short code number 274637.

I can never understand vandalism. It is so senseless. All they do is hurt others in one way or another, and in the long run themselves, because inevitably they will get caught and pay with time and or fines. They also besmirch their own names which affects their employment possibilities down the road.

While sometimes such vandalism is a deliberate, targeted event, most often it is just some yahoos "having fun." They care only about getting their jollies, and not about the damage they cause nor the hurt feelings left in their wake.

Sometimes perpetrators are drunk, sometimes just thoughtless and inconsiderate, and some have no empathy for others.

I think this is absolutely disgusting! Why?? its a shame that some young people have no clue how to act when they are visiting another community! Wawa does not need this at any time, but now just after the disaster that we lived through where are they going to get the money to fix this? Come on people time to crack down on this stuff and raise our children to have respect for others!!!

Make the little bastards do all the repairs, pay for all the repairs and do some community service time instead of the normal slap on the wrist routine!
