um.......big bad walmart don't invest in top-notch video camera's?
Big Deal 2/25/2013 7:44:01 AM Report

It is really bad and it's only going to get even worst!!! All of these criminals laugh at our justice system...they don't care about getting charged and they don't pay for a lawyer!!!
Just Curious 2/25/2013 8:13:10 AM Report

At least it will take some strain off the Gore st Mac's...
funkywalker 2/25/2013 8:19:27 AM Report

5 feet tall? No wonder he needs a gun. Loser
sinikka 2/25/2013 8:25:24 AM Report

I am sure that big bad walmart does have video cameras. What do you want them to do Gretzky show you a picture of a five foot guy with a black balaclava on. You are an idiot.

Sam C 2/25/2013 8:42:32 AM Report

I feel bad for the cashier... that had to be a very terrifying experience. Let's hope this criminal genius brags about his feat, and ends up getting snitched-on and caught.
Right Winger 2/25/2013 8:46:58 AM Report

I am sure they have cameras. Made in China. Don't work well but they weren't expensive.
sue123 2/25/2013 8:47:00 AM Report

The main thing no one was hurt but I imagine she is really shaken up. As for the comment about walmart not having a video camera they do I am sure but it is hard to see a face with a belaclava.
SuperiorYardCare 2/25/2013 8:50:25 AM Report

Yikes. Scary, but very sad.

tooter 2/25/2013 9:04:42 AM Report

the poor cashier she must have been so affraid, I find it odd that no one noticed someone coming in with a balaclava on, wouldn't that be a HELLO whats with this person.... so glad the cashier is fine though but I'm sure very shook up. I don't care what kind of camera's you have they can't get the face when it's covered. I'm more then sure wal mart has camera's. I hope they catch whoever did this and they need to start clamping down on them so they see this city means business and cut down on the crime instead of giving them a slap on the hand and letting them go.
roxxyroller 2/25/2013 9:10:22 AM Report

@Just Curious -- ROTFLMAO!!!!!!
roxxyroller 2/25/2013 9:11:54 AM Report

This is a short month, so that means only 4 more days til welfare cheques are issued ... couldn't have waited for their cheque?
antiquejewelryboughtandsold 2/25/2013 9:30:58 AM Report

Cash Drawer wouldn't open?? Why? Is it worth losing this viable hardworking cashier over a few hundred dollars. Lucky for her the culprit took off. It's not ok to hand over cash to a culprit, but it is less ok for an innocent person to loose their life for a few lousy dollars. Poor cashier, will be scarred for life. The crime in Sault Ste. Marie has sky rocketed, and is some of the worst in the province per capita. Wake up people! It's not getting any better. Scary stuff when armed gun men can walk into a walmart wearing a balaclava. This is a place where people take their children to shop. This armed person should be caught, and prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law, and given a maximum sentence without hesitation.
Norm 2/25/2013 9:48:52 AM Report

Not sure why people think the cashier was a woman. I was checked out by a young man last time I was in there. Anyway, get shorty.....
roxxyroller 2/25/2013 9:50:26 AM Report

I know a manager and she verified that it was a young girl at the cash.

Little bobby at home learning nuttin...the rest is our future to witness...not history. little boy grew up to be a man...

wake up! its not working and its going to get worse and then break, no choice then...someone will be telling u or your children what to do! where's the freedom? You have a choice now...idle no more! at least send your children to whom you preached the promise land here on earth and how we are against all that attacks our...freedom, peace and harmony for all...not just the liberal approach " I got mine go get yours! " someone will eventually take yours and your neighbours too and then your apart of the 99% of us who serve this society of greed. leave the thought of making millions to MAX lotto...649...your odds are about the same, so what's important to YOU?

@Mr Cloudy

Huh?
IB-fine 2/25/2013 11:24:15 AM Report

Mr. Cloudy, not following what your point is??

OMG the poor cashier, talk about real post traumatic stress! Bet Walmart won't even provide counseling and stress leave....no work, no get paid! as many of us have worked for years.
I do hope they give her that and a reward but I highly doubt it!

Shorty-robber most new cash registers won't open with just a button pushed. Can tell you haven't worked in ages!
firefly42 2/25/2013 11:29:03 AM Report

I'm glad this dummy didn't get any money, it may deter other dummies from trying it. However, the poor cashier must have been panicking worse when the cash drawer wouldn't open, what if this person spazzed out and shot this poor girl, no amount of money is worth that. This idiot should think about the trauma he put this girl through, and may very well go through for the rest of her life, for what? nothing.

There is a big addiction problem that needs to be addressed, because things are only going to get worse.
Just Curious 2/25/2013 11:29:41 AM Report

sloppy, that's what I was gonna post about mr cloudy...LOL.
And as far as the cash drawer not opening, you have to scan in a sale before you can open the drawer. This guy should have bought a roll of candy or something. Drawer would have been open and he could just help himself..
bigG47 2/25/2013 11:30:12 AM Report

Mr Cloudy, you need to see somebody, to get an attitude adjustment ! You are very negative !
JustMe1234567 2/25/2013 11:30:40 AM Report

That is brazen!

I hope they catch this guy quick, who would have the nerve to do such a thing...at a Walmart...in a mall..before 9pm??

Someone dope-sick desperately wanting money for drugs??

My sympathies to the cashier, I bet she didn't sleep well last night.

Geco 2/25/2013 11:37:03 AM Report

Mass consciousness is slowly spreading, we are only just at the beginning of a global change. The fact is every person can make a difference, what have you done to spread love in the world today? If more and more people in the Sault would open their hearts maybe we wouldn't have so many youth turning to drugs and crime. Let go of the wants and focus on the needs, this would open our awareness to better focus on the greater for man kind instead of the individual. A point I'm afraid to many Sault residents cling to today. Why is crime spreading in the Sault you ask? Because we are letting it, get involved in a youths life. Show them that parties and social status is a way of the past, tomorrow brings a unity way of being that will empower us to our true potential. :) Spread the positive and we will change the negative, you will see!!
Algomasteammaker 2/25/2013 11:39:55 AM Report

Why not! You know how many get caught just because someone recognizes the jacket. How many crack heads are that short and its not like they have a large selection of winter wear.

Yes throw out the video if you have them, whats there to lose?
crashed13 2/25/2013 11:45:10 AM Report

That Walmart must be dead. The Walmart on Great Northern has a long line up at every cashier, there would of been 10 witnesses at least.
Daddy-O 2/25/2013 11:48:39 AM Report

Ok people lets get our priorities straight here. This cashier will need some kind of counseling. And lets give WalMart some credit here as no one posting here actually knows the WalMart policy for this type of action. They may have already started the process for her. We can all have our opinions and we are entitled to them but lets all keep positive that this young lady is not traumatized for life and lets also hope that the coward gunman gets caught and is traumatized by his cell mate "bubba" who will be happy to keep mr gunman busy for a full stay in our prison system.

cant believe there is two walmarts when walmart usa is all Ontario plates
SCRAPPIE 2/25/2013 12:27:12 PM Report

It is amazing that a crime has happened, that there are many people who were scared and shaken from this event that they personally had no control over , and the first thing 90% of the people on here want to do is jump to conclusions about security and how Walmart will(or will not) help these employees!

YOU HAVE NO IDEA !!!!!

You people jumping to conclusions and bashing a situation you know nothing about should really give your head a shake !

You are doing nothing but adding to the trauma of these poor victims! Bashing their co-workers and support system at Walmart ! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES!

...anyone consider the possibility that he had a legitimate concern to steal and provide for himself or someone else and maybe in desperation the person did what they had never done before and this is the failings of his robbery attempt,,,could of been,,,

not negative...im human...stop blaming who? the welfare state of dependence the 99% of you and I live in? Why shop across the river?, like the market taught me,,, get the very best value for your buck,PROGRE$$...Victim:Canada's economy ,,,our government does it for Busine$$...sells our land and very good riches to take back to their country and leave us with the by-product....PROGRE$$...Victim: YOU & I! Wake up in the most positive way and it will be ok! update is required to have the latest information...education u were never taught...who you are?
SCRAPPIE 2/25/2013 1:24:47 PM Report

@Mr Cloudy

Take your own advice and read your words out loud!

"anyone consider the possibility that he had a legitimate concern to steal and provide for himself or someone else and maybe in desperation the person did what they had never done before and this is the failings of his robbery attempt,,,could of been,,"

So this some how makes it ok for this person to put a gun to someones head!

Yes society can suck yes the economy is rough...............But there is NO excuse for this EVER there are resources in life.

Please stop and think about what you are saying before you post as you make it sound as though this was a just act !
Daddy-O 2/25/2013 1:35:25 PM Report

SCRAPPIE - right on - :)

Cloudy - If the robber has issues with providing for his family, maybe he should have considered reaching out to the community that provides food banks and soup kitchens. Church groups would be happy to help those in need as well. The actions of this robber (coward) has NO JUSTIFICATION whatsoever. How dare he traumatize this young lady who has nothing to do with his reasons for committing such a heinous crime. He had better alternatives and chose not to access them. Stop making excuses for him Cloudy and just hope he learned his lesson and does not try this again.

David007 at least try to spell your ignorant response correctly for the record it is Sault Ste. Marie and I personally am relieved that no one was hurt...keep the focus on finding and prosecuting the offender and making sure that all the employees involved were not physically injured
saultresident 2/25/2013 1:51:45 PM Report

AndyCap 2/25/2013 4:29:04 PM Report

Quit busting Mr Cloudy's nuts. Not once did he/she say it was ok for this action to be done. I believe he/she is trying to explain that this horrible local crime is a direct result of a declining society. If there was as much emphasis on making money as there is on spreading kindness there would be less of these crimes. That being said someone needs to ram some kindness up this thief's head
SCRAPPIE 2/25/2013 4:48:26 PM Report

@AndyCap

" had a legitimate concern to steal"

that to me sounds like justifying or saying it is ok! I'm sure I am not the only one that interpreted it this way!

rockbottom 2/25/2013 5:15:16 PM Report

This guy needs some hard jail time and should also be forced to do the Walmart cheer every day, for the rest of his life, with no chance for Parole or Rollbacks.
Soopaintballclub 2/25/2013 11:22:50 PM Report

Relax people. Emotions are the real enemy. The cashier is fine.....not traumatized(which she shouldn't be) and will be returning to work for her next shift.

The northern wal mart's initial policy to their cashiers was to not give would be criminals the money and to not tell anyone that was their policy........big shocker there. I mean they pay you minimum wage and give you one shift a week, you SHOULD risk your life for them. Idiots.

The criminal was probably a junkie. If you haven't been a junky, you have no idea what withdrawl feels like. All people are capable of crime in those circumstances. It doesn't justify his actions, but it's only going to get worse as long as people don't pay more attention to their kids.

May I ask why you are trashing Walmart if you don't know their policy's have you every thought the poor cashier was so scared her mind went blank that is why the register wouldn't open if you were in that situation I am sure you wouldn't be calm and I know Walmart had no problem with with her handing over the money they would have insurance for that right now their main concern is for the cashier and the other ones that were working around her at the time and the customers who were at the the location I am just thankful no one was hurt and there is no reason in the world for anyone to put a gun to someones head lets hope they catch this person before he does end up killing someone.

I work for that Walmart, and we have Resources for Living, which is a 24/7 365 counselling. Also she was given a few days off. The store manager is a great man, who cares about his employees, and will make sure she is ok and 100% comfortable working and do everything in his power to make sure this does not happen again.
