Ontario Cabinet to meet in Sault Ste. Marie

New Ontario government plans Cabinet meeting focused on Northern Ontario

The new Ontario government will hold a cabinet meeting in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday, March 1, as part of the government's focus on the interests of Northern communities.

In its Speech from the Throne, the government committed to addressing Northern Ontario's complex transportation needs, including vital access to the Ring of Fire.

The government will also create a Northern cabinet committee that will keep the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario on track.

To ensure every person in this province has the same opportunities, the government will also focus on developing more paths to employment, including those for young people and Aboriginal communities in the North.

"Our government is committed to looking at everything through a Northern lens. I look forward to working with my cabinet to address the issues that matter most to Northern Ontario, such as job creation, transportation and the Ring of Fire." - Kathleen Wynne, premier of Ontario

"I am pleased to welcome Premier Wynne and my colleagues to Sault Ste. Marie. This cabinet meeting demonstrates the Premier’s commitment to listening to northerners and provides an excellent forum for discussing the unique challenges and opportunities in the North." - David Orazietti, minister of natural resources

"I am very excited about Premier Wynne's strong commitment to Northern Ontario. This is, indeed, a pivotal and dynamic time for our part of the province and under the Premier's leadership, our government is truly poised to seize the opportunities that lay ahead." - Michael Gravelle, minister of northern development and mines

Quick facts

The Growth Plan for Northern Ontario launched in 2011. It is the second growth plan developed under 2005’s Places to Grow Act.

Premier Wynne made a commitment to convene a cabinet meeting in Northern Ontario within 30 days of her swearing-in.

Honourable David Orazietti already getting results.

Well whoopeeeeeeee!!!

A few bureaucrats from a disgraced government that could get kicked to the curb any day, are spending even more money just to hold a meeting.
How can you not get all a ga ga about that, eh?
Paddlenut 2/22/2013 3:24:59 PM Report

Hi learningaswego. Today's lesson: they're not bureaucrats. They're politicians.

There will be an election in the spring...any bets?

Justin T. must be a die hard Liberal at all costs to Ontario, wake up and smell the coffee, their finished!
icemantbi 2/22/2013 4:17:22 PM Report

Molder2 there HAS to be an election. When a leadership convention decides who will lead the majority part, and therefore becomes Premier, an election has to follow, as they need a new mandate. It's one of those unwritten rules. There will be a spring election.
Justin Tetreault 2/22/2013 4:19:21 PM Report

People accuse the government of ignoring the north all the time on this site.

Now that there is a tangable demonstration of the government's commitment to the north and David's success in fighting for the Soo (because this meeting could have as easily been in Sudbury or Thunder Bay) people should give the government and Dave the credit they deserve.

That's not true at all. Ernie Eves didn't call a snap election for the PC's he served out Harris' term. Same for Kim Campbell, Christy Clark in BC, etc. Paul Martin didn't call an election after he became leader in 2004.

We just had an election a year ago. The Liberals have their mandate. The province doesn't need to spend $300 million for another election.

If the N.D.P. and the Conserative,s vote against the next budget an election will be called!

Anyone see the nice picture of David in the sault star, makes me wonder who's butt he is about to kiss, nice pucker!
AceOfBass 2/22/2013 4:58:54 PM Report

Yippee The Village People are coming to town! Why after 9 years are they are coming here? They only reason I can see is to try and save this riding for Flash Bulb Dave.

This Village People version of the Liberals is just full of hot air.

Northern Ontario needs to separate from this province and go on its own.We can get along without the GTA and the rest of those below the French River.

Northern Ontario has all the natural resources they belong to us and we should be benefiting not these carpetbaggers from GTA.

Way to go David! This is awesome to have a meeting like this coming to SSM! Furthermore, if the PCs vote against a budget and force an election, that will win them litte favour in my book, you can bet on that!
Keep up the great work David!

'Flashbulb Dave'!
recvid 2/22/2013 7:34:13 PM Report

Have read all of the negatives as always about the Libs and PC's and NDP's, in all honesty Dave has done a great job for the Sault, and this will be the first time a meeting has been held in the Sault in my lifetime, have to think Dave is working hard for Northern Ontario!! Yes politicians may always have an agenda to serve for their own purposes but hey if we benefit from it why not, people will eat here, stay in hotels here rent out a meeting spot here, have catering done here, let them have the meeting, if nothing positive happens from that meeting for Northern Ontario then everyone has the right to throw them under the bus!! i am not a Liberal but i do support Dave and i think their new Gov't under a new Leader should be given a chance. only thing i think that is going to be wrong about this meeting.......wait for going to be protesting in any sort, just let them have their meeting and lets go from there, judge them for what this meeting brings to Northern Ontario, not what the past has left us! Any comments?
AceOfBass 2/22/2013 8:02:35 PM Report

Flash Bulb Dave has no doubt done a wonderful job as our MPP. He sold out for a Cabinet Post.No integrity

This whole liberal government is a joke a cheap version of the Village People .The leader of this was appointed by her party and she was made Premier.

They have no mandate to govern and should not after parliament being prorogued.

The liberal version of The Village People should call an election and let the people decide their fate.
recvid 2/22/2013 8:20:05 PM Report

Everything that is old is new again, for what we have been through in N.O. why not give it a chance......people in N.O. have voted this govt in for 9 years even w the pilon they had for a leader, Canadian politics suck you either vote for the person or the party and you get the same outcome, leaders make no difference, if the MP or MPP are doing a good job then 90% of the time you vote for the person and not the Govt, so sit down give them a chance, then if not happy with the short term outcome raise your voice and help call an election, remember we are the ones that vote, you may not vote the way everyone else does but majority rules and sometimes that sucks! as a small business owner i have voted PC and Lib over the last couple of years i do not cast my vote without thinking of the long term future of my business or my employees, go from there, i will at least give them a little leash to let the dog walk a little, if it';s not in the direction i choose then get on board and lets have another 30 million dollar election that we pay for anyways, but dont do it because of what we had to deal with last time, maybe just maybe this new Leader haz another course of action!

Do you think that super Dave will be given more money for dead horses?
Prrrrrrr 2/22/2013 11:55:14 PM Report

AceOfBass...IN MY OPINION: those resources belong to the native people! I'm not native so don't start with the native bashing! Clearly these people are the rightful owners of the Natural Resources in this Country!

IB-fine 2/23/2013 12:54:54 PM Report

So the Liberals having a cabinet meeting here is suppose to mean they are taking care of N.O.?? How?
Do we the public get to go watch? Ask questions?
Get individual time with any of the minsters....can't get to see David "Flashbulb" O.
This is helping us? How?
Spend some money at local hotels and restaurants, and have some more Flashbulb moments?
Don't get it??
danno2257 2/23/2013 1:24:22 PM Report

Are they going to make porco avery and henson wealthier my god they already gave them close to 20 million $ers is that not enough ,don't worry are tax dollars will pay for extra cost of meeting coming to Sault Ste. marie, the liberals know how to spend are money wisely.
I'm In 2/23/2013 2:16:56 PM Report

All politiclans seek votes for their own agenda, they step down cause they know they are done with the electorate ie: McGuinty, Bartolucci, Duncan. So what David O got results for this community, its our tax dollars not his, he has no choice but to help the Sault out thats why he was elected and re-elected, now the teachers and public servants are pissed so thats why David is done next election regardless what kind of meeting comes to the Sault. The only thing is don't vote PC because they are the big business party and don't give to shits about the middle and poor working class.
