Ice water rescue training
On February 19, 2013, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services (SSMFS) will be involved in a two-day ice water rescue training session.
The training will take place on St. Marys River waterfront.
A total of eight SSMFS personnel will be trained on various ice water rescue competencies, including simulated scenarios.
The scenarios will involve shore based rescues, and off shore water rescues.
Upon successful completion of the two day program, our eight personnel will become certified ice water rescue technicians.
SSMFS possesses an ice water rescue vessel (WR-1) which can respond to individuals in distress on the various waterways located within the region.
The Ice water rescue craft has a unique flat bottom hull, driven by an airplane propeller, and can navigate on ice, water and land. In 2012 SSMFS responded with WR-1 to five rescue/recovery incidents within the region.
SSMFS would like to remind the public that no ice is safe ice and to use extreme caution whenever venturing onto frozen waterways.
