School bus cancellations for Algoma area (updated)

Tuesday, February 19, 2013   by: Staff

Please be advised that transportation for schools in the Central Algoma area is cancelled today due to the adverse weather and poor road conditions.
This includes Central Algoma Secondary School, Echo Bay, Laird, Johnson, Arthur Henderson, St. Joe's Island and Thessalon public schools.
Schools however are open.

All other area transportation is operating today.

School transportation is also cancelled in the Northshore area - including Spanish, Blind River and Elliot Lake.
Schools there remain open as well.

Wow all school busses around the Sault are cancelled. Lake State University main campus is closed. But we are still running our school busses in the Sault. Should I plan to pick up my kids later in the day because the busses are stopping then. Isn't this suppose to get worse today?
speed7 2/19/2013 8:21:51 AM Report

Whyy the buses run in treachorous weather baffles me ? And for what to be cancelled by noon? Freeze there butts off waiting for a ride. Our boards are clueless! Michigan already cancelled heir schools last evening? What up?
mehardy 2/19/2013 8:24:52 AM Report

And to top it all off the power is out in the east end! Good job school boards...keep us guessing cause we working parents don't already have enough to think/worry about....grrrrrr...

It is always about the bus students. Never any worry about the poor walking students.

The kids freeze their butts off waiting for a ride. Well what do you think the kids, who have to walk do? Everyday, no matter what the weather!
j.r.98 2/19/2013 9:14:53 AM Report

I feel for the kids who have to walk everyday in all kinds of weather and for the kids who are standing out there and watch they parents drive to work only to be left home alone in the winter with no power..... that's why everyone needs a plan for days like these. PLEASE.... don't count on others for help.. Learn to be prepared
momofmanyhats 2/19/2013 9:27:44 AM Report

It would be nice if our boards were prepared. Sault Mich new the busses were cancelled last night for today. If we new sooner if the busses were cancelled we wouldn't be waiting around wondering if the kids are being picked up or not. Hard to be prepare when you don't know what you are preparing for. Waiting for bus or walking. Making a decision sooner is key to be prepared.
Johnedater 2/19/2013 9:48:35 AM Report

blah blah blah.....why can't people learn to be more proactive instead complaining and making sure the world knows everything is someone else's fault. So what is the bus gets cancelled at noon!!! Either you prepare for it now or deal with it then. Sheesh, it is not like the world is ending. You live in the North and this is not the first time this has happened nor will it be the last so deal with it instead of being all about "me" and complaining like a child. Teach your kids something positive today,
PLEASE....and it is knew and not new! another lesson you can teach your child.
Wobbler 2/19/2013 10:03:46 AM Report

Not sure, but isn't it up to the bus companies to cancel the school busses? I don't think the school boards can tell the managers to take them off the road or to continue with their regular schedule. I imagine that the bus companies pay their own insurance and are responsible for the safety of their drivers and passengers, not the school boards.

If this is your biggest problem in life, as to whether the buses will be running, then count your blessings! You have the option of keeping your children home. You could have decided last night on what to do with your children.

I would not be impressed if the buses were cancelled every time there was a weather warning.

By the way, welcome to Northern Ontario. Are the people of the north becoming a bunch of whining wimps? I, personally, love winter. Especially the winter of yesteryear.

I KNEW last night that we were going to get nice NEW snow!

A family member just told me that a school bus was in a bit of an accident this morning on McNabb, near Lake Street and another bus had to be brought there to transport the children to their destination.
JanMarie 2/19/2013 10:50:16 AM Report

Its funny, I would just like to point out the fact that the last time the buses were cancelled due to weather everyone was complaining about it now today everyone is complaining about how they should be cancelled. Maybe the last time they got so much flak from everyone that they are careful not cancel buses and anger a mob even though there probably shouldn't be any buses on the roads.

When the bus picked up my son the bus driver said there were 13 buses already stuck. So next time they do cancel buses lets just be grateful they are being cautious.
