Demolition of at least part of the vacant Northern Breweries building on Bay Street should begin very soon.

That from City of Sault Ste. Marie Chief Building Official Don Maki.

Part of the vacant building was severely damaged in a fire last Thursday.

The property was purchased by developers in April 2011, with the intention of demolishing the old brewery and erecting a 30-storey tower, with commercial space on the lower floors and residential condos on the upper floors.

Nirmala Singh of NSGI, (formerly Sun Avalone), the property’s new owners, could not be reached for comment.

Maki told SooToday.com “we’ve issued an order (to NSGI) to demolish the front portion of the building where the fire was, within 30 days.

Maki said no deadline was given for demolition of the entire site.

“That’s at their leisure, we don’t have any issues with the rest of the building.”

The partial demolition order was issued February 8, Maki said.

“She (Singh) has put everything in motion to get that front part demolished.  I know there was somebody going through the building.  They had to hire an engineer to do a review and give us a synopsis of the demolition and a plan for a road closure when they do it.  They’re working on it.”

Investigation of the blaze on February 7 resulted in City Police arresting a 17-year-old female and 20-year-old Merle Travis Bowen-Hart.

Police have not revealed information about the charges, but Constable Sonny Spina of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service told us no additional suspects are being sought in this investigation.
