Back in my day, kids in high school only sold joints, what's with the little baggies?

And I've often wondered why the police spell marijuana...'marihuana'?

anyone?
fullstringer 2/13/2013 8:34:51 PM Report

It's too bad they don't identify the school. A few years ago when the board first started intregrating the gr. 7&8 at Bawating, there was all kinds of police calls from those kids and nary a word was mentioned except Mario Turco bragging up how well it was going.
MaximusPrime 2/13/2013 8:40:23 PM Report

Also, why do they refer to it as a narcotic? Anybody with even the slightest bit of medical background knows marijuana is not in the catagory of "narcotics".
Snowdon 2/13/2013 8:45:03 PM Report

Now this kid will probably never go to university or college and will have to become a police officer.
MaximusPrime 2/13/2013 8:45:29 PM Report

At least this time they are not reporting the value of the small bags of marijuana as being worth a quazzillion dollars.

By no means is it acceptable for one especially youths to be bringing marijuana to school or work, but there is a time and place. Just look at the previous comments. There will become a time were this person can sit back and say "back in my day I got charged for this stuff that they thought was So bad."
JustMe1234567 2/13/2013 10:05:50 PM Report

I agree with Cliff. I think the teenagers of today will see marijuana legalized in their life times.

I'm getting up there in age, not sure if I'll ever see it happen, but kids today I'm sure will.

Wicket 2/13/2013 10:31:09 PM Report

gee, the people that today are in their fifties and sixties, thought it would be legalized in their lifetime too - guess not.
Tom_Bom 2/13/2013 10:50:04 PM Report

Jack Layton once said on Pot TV that marijuana was a wonderful plant in an interview.

cliff76 2/13/2013 11:36:27 PM Report

The question often comes up "Do you think we'll see it legalized?" Lots of people (over the age 50) say "I've been hearing that since I was a teen." Keep in mind those are the same people that have the attitude the internet and computers are too hard or complicated. In my opinion I think it will be legalized in the near future. It's sad there's so much politics involved. If nothing else do it for the sick and people in need. I know for myself I'd rather be introduced to a "bowl" rather then a glass of wine at an early age. Pretty sure I wouldn't have done half if not all the irresponsible things I have done. Many of you will say and look at this and say you shouldn't have done either and your right but that comes to the question, why is alchol legal?
Bad Dawg 2/14/2013 12:36:50 AM Report

Even when its legal for adults these lil bastards should be nailed to the wall when caught.
daduke 2/14/2013 12:57:13 AM Report

@cliff76

I don't know where you got the idea that people in their 50's are afraid of computers; I'm in my 50's and I build them. I also play MMORPG's, as do a lot of my friends in their 50's.

You are right about "we've been hearing this since we were teenagers" though. It will happen eventually, but I really don't think it will happen in my lifetime.

As for the kid with the gram bags, if he was stupid enough to have it at school, he deserves to get busted. Depending on any prior record, he'll only get a slap on the wrist anyway.
FirstChairLastCall 2/14/2013 1:23:07 AM Report

So, cigarettes are legal and deadly however, it is illegal for those under 18 (19?).
Weed is illegal across the board and therefore also illegal for the under 18's.
Cops bust a kid selling weed but, drive by under age smokers.
Bizarre no?
FirstChairLastCall 2/14/2013 1:24:31 AM Report

++ Under age smokers at the highschool to be specific. Crowds of them.
thomas 2/14/2013 6:08:37 AM Report

firstchairlastcall, if they charged every underage smoker, the courts would be more overpacked than they already are with young offenders with other more important issues.

As for the pot, the kid shouldn't have been selling out of his locker at school. Kind of dumb, when he must know they bring in sniffer dogs now and then.

My only concern about legalizing pot is that there is still huge money made in growing/moving/selling MaryJane with drug lords. Legalized, the drug lords and pushers would turn to finding other, far more dangerous illegal drugs to sell.
Newsjunkie 2/14/2013 7:35:10 AM Report

FirstChairLastCall

It is NOT illegal for kids under 18 to smoke. It is illegal to sell cigarettes to someone under 18. See the difference?

Kids cannot be charged for smoking on the sidewalk in front of the school... I wish it WERE illegal, but it's not.

As for legalizing marijuana... even if/once it becomes legalized, I highly doubt it would suddently become legal or appropriate for a minor to be selling it at school anymore than it would be legal or appropriate for them to sell alcohol at school or show up drunk.
sweetthing 2/14/2013 9:10:45 AM Report

This is where it all starts pot, pills, and coc.... sold to the kids by young kids that could be the reason there is so much crime in sault ste marie well hope he gets more than just a slap on the wrist Not sure why they will not give the name of the school i would not send my kids there. All i read about are drug busts now thats scarey
Stevie-E 2/14/2013 10:52:43 AM Report

Here's how to get a country out of debt while improving our health:

a) Legalize Marijuana - Tax the crap out of it.

b) Junk/Fast food - Tax the crap out of it and subsidize natural organic farming in Canada allowing it to be more accessible and affordable.

c) Loosen up the liquor laws in Ontario. Reduce the taxes somewhat and get rid of LCBO and Beer Stores. Regulation doesn't work when it comes to that stuff. It just pisses Ontarians off...the laws are too stringent.
crashed13 2/14/2013 11:08:57 AM Report

Whats a High School Liaison Officers ?

Is there special training to be called to a school now?
Yes its baggies now ,the pipe is more popular then joints now.

They would of needed the entire police force if they wanted to charge the people who used/sold pot in my hight school.
riverman 2/14/2013 11:41:04 AM Report

MaximusPrime: Although marijuana is not a narcotic, it has been so often referenced in this manner by law unforcement agencies that its use as such goes uncorrected.

thomas: Drug sniffing dogs are no longer allowed in schools. It was ruled to be unconstitutional.

SweetThing: If you don't want to send your child to a high school where drugs are present, prepare to home school them. There is not a high school in this city where street drugs are not present. Sorry. Your best strategy is to make sure your child understands what their choices are when it comes to substance use and misuse, and the possible consequences (legal and healthwise) that accompany those choices.

Crashed: A high school liaison officer is the police officer assigned to each school to liaise between the students, the administration, and the police force.

And even those of you who support the legalization of pot surely recognize that drugs of any sort have no place in our schools. Even weed. You can fight the truth that a 15 year old brain is still developing and can be damaged by the ongoing use of marijuana, but you cannot successfully argue that a teenager will learn better when high.

Sleve 2/14/2013 11:41:18 AM Report

the real question that was not answered is very simple, when this young man sells these little baggies are the consumers of his product in-hailing it when they smoke it ? I recall a President of the United States Of America stating he tried it but never in-hailed ????
MaximusPrime 2/14/2013 12:23:44 PM Report

Drug use is an acknowledged fact of life in every prison in the country. If we can't stop prisoner' use of drugs, how can we rationally expect to stop average free citizens from using them?

“Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself” - Jimmy Carter
Bad Dawg 2/14/2013 1:28:59 PM Report

pot is as much of a gateway drug as a ritalin perscription.
MaximusPrime 2/14/2013 2:23:02 PM Report

The “gateway theory” is based on the Latin term “post hoc, ergo propter hoc” which mean: “after this therefore because of this”. This argument is a logical fallacy based on the premise that correlation is causation. However any educated person knows that correlation does not always equate to causation. If it did then among other examples, water would be attributed to the cause of pregnancy, since all pregnant women consumed water prior to pregnancy, therefore water must be the cause of pregnancy. Just because someone first tried marijuana before consuming crack does not mean that the first caused the latter. All those people who use crack first started with water, prescription drugs, nicotine…….
FirstChairLastCall 2/14/2013 3:04:13 PM Report

I just looked up the law, it is illegal to smoke for 16 and under.

KRF91 2/14/2013 6:34:30 PM Report

Oh please. Who cares.
Tom_Bom 2/14/2013 6:51:52 PM Report

I can't believe people are still holding onto the disproven old wives tale of the gateway theory - Pot leading to harder drugs. That's been proven untrue.

Also if you want to cling to the gateway theory, why don't we say alcohol leads to harder drugs? Why don't we say that anti-deppresants and anti anxiety medication like xanax lead to harder drugs.

Those who want to keep Marijuana criminalized lock themselves in their panic rooms because they know they're running out of disproven wives tales.

There is no scientific or logical explanation as to why marijuana should be illegal. None. Prohibition harms society because the pot is sold by gangs and they reap the profits instead of the government. We fill our jails with non violent drug related offenses instead of going after the real criminals.

The laws against marijuana are nothing short of a sick perverse form of discrimination against people who either want to relieve medical symptoms, or just simply want to get high and mind their own business. Smoking marijuana is a victimless crime.

Also no, i don't think kids should be smoking it. That's part of why it should be legalized - put an age limit on it of 19 like with alcohol and make it much harder for the kids to get. Sell it only out of licensed, regulated establishments such as the LCBO, as a perfect example.

The old dinosaurs with their case of reefer madness are slowly fading away, giving birth to a new era of tolerance and understanding. Either you live in fears based off of the mis-truths that have been perpetuated over the years, or you wake up and realize that legalization of marijuana is the only real way to begin to win the war on drugs.

Thank you for your time.
