Sault warm to The Hip's form

Wednesday, February 13, 2013   by: Donna Hopper

The Essar Centre was full of love for the return of Canada's beloved Tragically Hip Tuesday evening.

The Kingston, Ontario quintet made a stop in Sault Ste. Marie six years after first appearing at the Essar Centre in 2007.

Touring behind The Hip's 13th studio release, Now For Plan A, the Sault was the band's second-last stop before wrapping the current tour in Toronto on Valentine's Day.

Further details about last night's show, including photo gallery, will be posted on SooToday.com's news page Wednesday afternoon.

Downie's pipes were in full force and he hasn't lost anything over the last 30 years. The Arkell's rocked the Essar as well. Great Rock and Roll Show!
Bad Dawg 2/13/2013 9:45:53 AM Report

I was totally impressed...seen them 4 times in 15 yrs.... I guess I'm just a fan.
Bono 2/13/2013 10:06:58 AM Report

It was one of the worst concerts I've ever attended. I saw them here six years ago and they were great but this was awful. The sound system made it that you could barely hear the lyrics and when you could hear Gord, it sounded more like he was screaming rather then singing. They seemed to rush their "popular songs" and spend more time playing songs few people knew. The one positive thing is Gord can sure put on a show... Just watching him move around and dance and interact with the fans was worth the price of admission.

The Hip ROCKED last night! They had a good setlist that featured alot of their old classics and also some of their new material. Gotta love Gord's stage presence and his little antics, like what he did with his hankerchief, you can tell the have alot of fun on stage.

All in all great show, and hopefully the Essar can start getting more good bands to come here!

Bono nailed it. Gord has great stage presence but the sound system was just awful.

totally sucked could not understand one word.where was the music that people knew?
Right Winger 2/13/2013 10:59:54 AM Report

I would give Gord's vocals a 7.5 out of 10.

I would give Paul, Johnny, Bobby and Gord Sinclair 10 out of 10

Was awesome. Didn't have a problem hearing anything. Enjoyed not just hearing a replay of a greatest hits setlist. Great bands change it up to keep it interesting and fresh, and the band sounded tight.

Great time.

And Essar, improve the atmosphere by having the floor be general admission.
opinionated 2/13/2013 3:23:40 PM Report

Agreed - awesome show.

Although I was lucky enough to have awesome floor seats, I think that the floor should ALWAYS be general admission, it just helps the atmosphere of the show so much more because the people that WANT to have a good time go up to the front of the stage.

People were yelling at me to sit down while the Arkells were playing - are you kidding me? Its a frikken rock concert not the Sault Symphony Orchestra (which I also appreciate, dont get me wrong).

The crowd was pretty good though, better than I thought they'd be (mind you it WAS the hip!) - the Soo always worries me in that sense, unless its an 80's hair band or some country guy, no one's into it. No appreciation.
FORZA ITALIA 2/13/2013 8:37:14 PM Report

These goofs who bring these stupid bands here worry me !I have been to over 30 concerts in the United States and Canada. 70s and 80s Rock is what formed Rock and Roll ! They brought Motley Crue and KISS here and then they started bringing washed up bands here !Take notes from Kewdian Casino ! They know what bands people like ! Kick it C.C !
Bad Dawg 2/14/2013 12:18:15 AM Report

The Hip is an awesome band from the 80's.... because most of the 80's hair/metal bands are broken up or in rehab

Rebels born without a care
And the day he listens
Only to fly where eagles dare
And the night she whispers
Ride the wind
Never coming back until I touch the midnight sun! 80s ROCK FOREVER !!
FORZA ITALIA 2/14/2013 7:47:59 AM Report

We need to bring Kip Winger to the Zoo !! Easy Come, Easy Go !
