Frustrated driver asks, 'Who parks like this?' (photo)

Monday, February 11, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

SooToday.com has received the following letter and photo shown from a loyal reader who, understandably, is also one very ticked off Sault motorist:

**************************

At about 11:30 this morning, I just happened to looked out the window of the office where I work in Station Tower and witnessed this parking travesty.

I was stupefied!

Who parks like this?

Parking is not rocket science, and yet still some people can't quite grasp the concept.

My truck is one of the vehicles that is trapped in the middle row and it wasn't freed until almost 4 this afternoon.

This was at worst a minor inconvenience for me as I have a wonderful Dad who loaned me his vehicle to fulfill my prior commitments for the day.

Not everyone has that option, so I think we need to be just a wee bit more aware of our surroundings before we slam the vehicle into park and carry on with our 'all-important' activities for the day.

Have a great day!

- Esther Strickland

This is nothing new - I have frequently see this at the Great Northern Rd. Dollarama. It's scary they have a driver's license.
Daiv 2/11/2013 6:41:05 PM Report

Hahah, I laughed as soon as I saw this because I was one of the vehicles in that parking lot.
I wasn't blocked in, thankfully, but I did come back to work after lunch and asked the exact same question!!!
I would have been livid if I'd been one of the ones blocked in.
thumper85 2/11/2013 6:44:58 PM Report

It's just like every other driver here in the soo as soon as the white lines disappear everyone turns stupid. And not just in parking lots. Then you have the idiots with there cars and trucks that cant spin a tire when its dry out so they drift through all the lights and stop signs because it slick like they are pros STUPID !
scottstewy123 2/11/2013 6:46:14 PM Report

YES I DO OWN THE PARKING LOT....... lol
habber 2/11/2013 6:48:55 PM Report

now if there is any reason to be towed i think this is it
first thing you should have done was call a towtruck then take a picture
daduke 2/11/2013 6:56:19 PM Report

Unfortunately, this is all to common in this city. The lines disappear, and it's like people's brains disappear with them. I had this happen to me in the CTC parking lot last winter, and had to sit for 20 minutes waiting for the person parked behind me to come and move their vehicle. No consideration at all.
Gater 2/11/2013 7:00:21 PM Report

Wow Hard to believe.. These people have valid drivers licenses..
Let it go... " You cant fix stupid"
thesharr 2/11/2013 7:02:59 PM Report

Two rows people not three.Look ahead when you park,if there is two cars aready there DO NOT PARK THERE!
KDawg 2/11/2013 7:09:08 PM Report

Many years ago when I drove an old tank of a pickup, I was surrounded by morons on all sides as the picture shows.

I got out the "easy way." The two vehicles in front and behind me? They were SOL.
rcssm69 2/11/2013 7:10:25 PM Report

Stop it with "these people from the Soo"! Do you think that we're the only city in Ontario with morons that can't drive and park! Every City has them, and they are all equally stupid! We aren't winning any prizes today!!!
rcssm69 2/11/2013 7:11:54 PM Report

If you look close, you can see the parking lines. They are doubly stupid!!!
snickers 2/11/2013 7:12:16 PM Report

sorry about there luck but someone would have got towed....u want to be stupid then thats what happens...i wold have called a tow truck....
khari 2/11/2013 7:19:51 PM Report

OMG! Unbelieveable!! And that's just parking. How stupid can you be? Even worse when there driving! That's why we have the worse drivers in the country. After driving in this city for 30 years,I've learned one thing. DEFENSE!!!
Stugatzu 2/11/2013 7:20:58 PM Report

The Soo _does_ have some of the worst motorists around. I work/drive in several metropolitan cities. I drive commercially. I've NEVER been worried UNTIL I enter Sault Ste. Marie city limits; and I've been to Toronto, Chicago, New York City, Philidelphia, Cleveland... There are a lot of morons in this town like in no other town... and they all have driver's licenses.

I'll say it again... pathetic. Only reinforced by the fact that one of Canada's Worst Drivers lives here in the Sault, and on television.. admitted to liking the drink before/during/after a drive.
the_fuzz 2/11/2013 7:24:37 PM Report

i want to comment so bad, but i cant even type something that wont just get deleted...
khari 2/11/2013 7:33:07 PM Report

You said it perfectly Stugatzu!! I was going to mention her but didn't! lol A few winters back. There was 225 accidents through out northern Ontario in one winter weekend.185 were in this city alone. Is that proof enough. If it takes one person 15 min,to get to work in the summer time. They expect to get to work in the same time in the winter. That's the problem.
Zarm27 2/11/2013 7:33:27 PM Report

lol, that's just sad, the lines are visible. I wonder if they assumed the they were in the right spot due to the pole being off center a bit. Still you would think they'd know something was wrong the second they stepped out of their car.
willoweep 2/11/2013 7:39:05 PM Report

As far as the Sault having the worst drivers , I have to ask if you ever driven in Sudbury?

Many of those clueless Drivers are Tourists who really don't know where they are going ,or what lane they should be in.

I always slow down at the exit to the Bridge they drive out of there without even looking or stopping.

As to the Parking lot I totally agree ,how dense can People be?

But yes I imagine it happens in other Cities as well .

Been wondering to other towns have People on 10 speed bike on the roads all Winter? or is this a Sault thing?
pride 2/11/2013 7:40:48 PM Report

You know what is really funny, I saw this at service ontario on Bruce Street renewing my licence...lol
medsec 2/11/2013 7:45:11 PM Report

The next time this happens at Station Tower, call security at Station Mall, they are supposed to be patrolling the parking lot, at the very least the guilty people should receive a ticket. They actually can go office to office and find the culprits. People are so inconsiderate it's frustrating.
EstherSue 2/11/2013 7:49:39 PM Report

I actually did call security, they were "out on another call" and didn't do anything about it to my knowledge. That was around 11:30am and I didn't get my truck until almost 4pm.
rockbottom 2/11/2013 8:05:06 PM Report

Looks like parallel parking, taken to the extreme, but I sure hope it doesn't catch on.
medsec 2/11/2013 8:05:15 PM Report

That's weird, they are usually very good at responding to calls, lucky it wasn't me blocked in, I don't think I would have been very nice"out on another call", pretty lame I'd say, to get anything done you have to ask for the "big guy" head of security, he'll get it done for sure. Bet they are out there tomorrow.

If it were my truck blocked in, I would simply put it in 4x4 and push. I drive an old beater and it wouldn't bother me in the least. LOL
SteveDave 2/11/2013 8:17:25 PM Report

It appears that stupidity is contageous. It only took one stupid parking job to infect at least 3 other drivers. Hopefully this doesn't turn into a pandemic.
Sam C 2/11/2013 8:19:54 PM Report

It's quite possible that when the cars parked the lines were NOT visible. However, it should have been obvious to the "third row" that there were already TWO rows of parked cars... IF they had bothered to look. Too many drivers have tunnel vision and blinders -- they don't see what is around them, they only have their eyes on finding a parking spot and getting where they are going.

What is funnier is going to larger parking lots -- like Churchill Plaza or Walmart, and seeing the winding rows of parked cars. I mean, really -- is parking in a straight line really that difficult?
fairy_lady 2/11/2013 8:36:39 PM Report

Daduke-why in the world would you wait 20 min?? That is just as stupid as parking three in a row. Go into canadian tire, have them page the dumbass who owns the vehicle, or have them call a tow truck. I never would have waited for someone to stop being stupid.
Gater 2/11/2013 9:18:26 PM Report

Its going to be a joy to go down there tomorrow morning and watch these people park LIVE. Bring your camera..

MCTV has been notified. It will be interesting to see if these drivers can SPEAK during an interview...

Maybe its some part of Bon Soo???Demonstrating Darwins theory?
Snowdon 2/11/2013 9:29:32 PM Report

Jeez the hyperbole on here is both hilarious and sad.
friendly 2/11/2013 9:32:44 PM Report

I do agree that is really bad. But don't just knock drivers in the Sault. Have you ever driven in Toronto and area? Give them an inch of snow and everyone is everywhere. If it's black ice, drive 130 and maybe the black ice won't catch you.

I would rather drive in the Sault anytime. But note to people not paying attention. Please park better in the future or get towed. Towed should have been automatic. Still love the Sault.

this is one of those times where you inch up to the other person's bumper, ensure you have good connection, then floor it! with the snow under their tires, you should be able to just slide them out of your way :) leaving a crude note helps also! :)

I'm not making excuses for the idiots in this parking lot, but give me a break. The Soo has the worst drivers!!! And we have all these great minds on this forum that know all the stats for all the Cities, and are commercial drivers, and world travellers, etc... (eyes rollings!!) Get a life!!!

Spend a few bucks at Canadian Tire and buy a couple locking gas caps for the offenders... throw them under the seat of the truck and when someone screws with you in the parking lot... Put 'em on their car... Instant revenge...

habby67 2/12/2013 9:01:54 AM Report

So I guess if the other people didn't complain then it's ok to block people in. I am rolling my eyes as we speak lol. The same people that block people in and yes they should pay attention to how they park, are the same ones that will pull out a baseball bat if someone even looks at them the wrong way. There are so many idiots like this who drive around town thinking they have some sort of entitlement to act brain dead and have the audacity to get offended when people rightfully get pissed at them.

kw126 2/12/2013 9:30:02 AM Report

What's sad is not how ignorant and clueless these drivers who parked to block in the second row is, but how rude and judging some of the people posting these comments are. Just because someone writes up a story to possibly prevent this from happening in the future, does not give anyone the right to cut them down on a personal level and throw out rude and possibly untrue facts about someone. It's time to grow up people, does it make you feel good about yourself putting someone else down? If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, dont say anything at all!!

Witout knowing who started blocking the cars in, how would you know who to tow? Start with the cars on the left in the picture or the ones on the right?

It does appear that the culprits are on the right because there are fewer of them but maybe some of the other cars left.

Regardless, it's pretty stupid to park 3 deep.

This sure gave me a good laugh last night when I read it, but seriously folks, would you have been so amused if you had been in that position! The parking officials really need to get off their hinies, quit making excuses and do their jobs! A private individual cannot just call a tow truck and have someone elses vehicle towed away in a public parking lot. The police would have to have been involoved if the Parking authorities could not be located! Somebody could have ended up paying a nasty ticket and tow bill! Could it be that some of the individuals who parked like that may be working in the same building? Maybe this will be a wake up call for a few of them including the obviously inept parking authorities!

Id love to get a shot of the sault college back parking lot.. like someone mentioned earlier snow falls and suddenly people forget how to park.. altho ive never seen this.. ive seen the curved rows which can make it hard to pull out after cause the car behind is so close.. ive see one car take up two spaces.. parked diagnonally in a straight spot.. parked where the line is in the middle of the car.. I was at the YMCA the other night parked in the 10min parking to run in and get my child.. came out less then 5mins later and a car had parked horizontally behind me there was maybe half a car lenght of space.. took me 15mins just to get out ..idiot!! i shoulda just rammed into him! LOL
EAS 2/12/2013 4:02:05 PM Report

rcssm I must admit that you're right. This winter has been unusually challenging due to the excessive amounts of snow. Right lanes are narrow, but you still have the idiots who squeeze in to pass, coming within inches of the vehicle in the left lane. Then there are the tailgaters. They think that others drive slow because they are incapable of going fast. It's easy to put the pedal to the metal. Stopping on ice and snow is another matter and I don't care if you have a 4X4, and especially if you don't. The police should be more vigilant as they cruise city streets and fine all dangerous drivers with NO exceptions.

I commented to a male driver the other day, "you can't park like that". He said, "yes I can" and kept walking. His vehicle was parked horizontally across 4 parking spaces. I hope his day got better.
PuppyGirl 2/13/2013 9:45:57 AM Report

Do you know what is really scary??? I'm assuming that most of the 'expert panel' that are complaining about this parking arrangement have a driver's license. If you look closely in the middle row there's a light post which is in between the 2 parking rows and also the dark vehicle in the right row has a snow covered windshield which means it's been there all night, so the people that are parked wrong are the 7 in the left hand row.
EstherSue 2/13/2013 10:25:49 AM Report

Actually the lines were visible early that morning when I parked and the left hand row and the middle row are all in between the lines, they are even visible in the picture. The lamp post is in a really odd spot. When I parked at about 7:50 am there were only people in the middle row, that van wasn't there as far as I can remember. Maybe the snow slid off the roof?
AAP 2/13/2013 12:48:59 PM Report

OOPS! Didn't notice the lines. Should've looked closer I guess.
