Essar Steel Minnesota LLC signs a landmark iron ore pellet off-take agreement with ArcelorMittal USA

HIBBING, MN (February 11, 2013) - Essar Steel Minnesota LLC ("ESML" or the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has entered into a long term iron ore pellet off-take agreement with ArcelorMittal USA ("AMUSA").

The term of the agreement is 10 years and the supply of pellets is expected to commence during the second half of ESML's fiscal year ending March 31, 2014.

As per the agreement, ESML will supply 3.5 million metric tonnes of standard and fluxed iron ore pellets annually to ArcelorMittal's North American operations.

ESML has approximately 2.0 billion metric tonnes of measured, indicated and inferred magnetite resources, out of which approximately 1.7 billion metric tonnes are proven and probable reserves.

Furthermore, the Company also has about 290 million metric tonnes of hematite resources.

ESML is presently constructing a 7.0 million metric tonnes per annum iron ore pellet plant at Nashwauk in Northern Minnesota, at an investment of US$ 1.7 billion.

Madhu Vuppuluri, president and Chief Executive Officer of ESML said: "This off-take agreement demonstrates the marketability of ESML's high-quality products to third parties in addition to Essar Steel Algoma."

He further added that ESML's diverse product portfolio will include standard, flux and DR grade pellets, and ESML will be the only producer capable of producing all three types of pellets in Unites States.

John Brett, executive vice president for Finance, Planning and Procurement of ArcelorMittal, USA, said: "We are pleased to enter into this long-term off take agreement with ESML. This off-take agreement is consistent with our strategy of securing long term supply of critical raw materials within the region, and it provides material that meets the stringent standards of our blast furnaces. ESML's ability to provide different types of pellets provides us the flexibility to utilize the product at multiple furnaces."

Who the hell cares about An Essar plant in Minnesota? How about bringing back the jobs that were cut HERE Essar? Really, is this news worth anything to the people of Sault Ste. Marie or is it just another BS publicity game by the idiots at Essar? I didn't read anything about laid-off employees being recalled anywhere in the article, let alone any benefits for the Sault, so why bother reporting it? Oh, i forgot, we need to make it appear as if Essar Sault Ste. Marie cares about our local employees - HA! more BS!
Cranny 2/12/2013 9:56:02 AM Report

Sault Jammer you don't have a clue what you are talking about!! Actually there is no one laidoff right now and the jobs that left for India are coming back! They actually have hired people in the last couple of months. All the people that got laid off work at Tenaris Algoma Tubes. That is a different company.I don't think Essar are idiots either. If this was any other company, no one would be working because of the world market. I work there and all the stuff you said is completely Wrong! You don't even know what company your talking about so you should just be quiet! Essar is actually a family orienented company but you wouldn't know that because you don't work there. Better watch what you say because if Essar does layoff a bunch of people you will probably lose your job!! If you have one! Don't comment unless you know what your talking about! AND YOU CLEARLY DON'T!!! Thanks Sootoday.com for the article I thought it was very good news for Essar.

@CRANNY - for Yyour information, i worked for Tenaris for many years before leaving due to rampant, open drug use by employees that were in positions of responsibility, such as overhead crane operators or mobile operators, etc. and i also worked in the steel plant. I am fully aware of what the India 'family' business is doing for the Sault. Reduced wages, cut benefits, cut hours, not to mention the fact that they cannot keep good workers because of lack of respect for the employee. AND for your information i am currently employeed and have been working consistantly since the 70's when i started with the ACR rail gangs. SO, i do think that with my 33+ yrs of work experience i have some understanding of what the Sault's situation is about. How long have you been working for Essar? - Since they purchased it a couple of years ago... That's probably the only job you've held longer than a couple of years. Get get your head out of your (or their) ass management guy!
icurhere 2/12/2013 10:16:39 AM Report

@Cranny
I have to agree with Jammer on this one. You seem to be totally missing his point. The article is about job creation elsewhere with absolutely no regard for our local economy. You may want to re-read the story and get your facts straight before knocking someone down just because they call it like it is.
dandrew61 2/12/2013 11:14:06 AM Report

I don’t normally write comments here I just read them but you guys too much.
“Who the hell cares about An Essar plant in Minnesota?”. “is this news worth anything to the people of Sault Ste. Marie?”. It’s truly not funny when people write comments that show they know nothing about what they write but they feel they have all the knowledge in the world and want to share it with others.
The fact is, and yes it’s a fact, Essar Steel Minnesota is being built to supply Essar Steel Algoma. Property was purchased, mines were purchased, facilities are being constructed to provide a guaranteed supply of lower cost raw materials to us at Essar Steel Algoma. I think that’s significant news to people here in the Soo. While I’m not fond of ESML providing to one of our competitors (ArcelorMittal), Essar Steel Algoma is a very small facility and will us only a small portion of what ESML will produce. It only makes sense they should sell raw materials to other companies, that’s the type of business they are building.
And when did Essar get these wage cuts you speak of or benefit cuts? I got my last wage increase in August just like my contract said I would. I’ve never had a wage cut since Essar bought the company nor a benefit cut. And reduced hours? The company and union just negotiated an extended hours of work agreement allowing us to work up to 60 hours.
SaultJammer and icurhere are right about one thing. People should get their facts right before posting but it’s not Cranny who needs to do that.
dandrew61 2/12/2013 11:24:44 AM Report

Just a follow up note to SaultJammer. If you’ve been working with the rail gang since the 70’s, you’re right, that is 33+ years. Since Tenaris only came here from Argentina about 12 years ago and Essar came here from India about 7 years ago, you’ve never worked for either of them.

Wow, Cranny nailed it, and the other two guys are way off the mark. Essar has been good for us.
