Kudos to the police department. You have effectively shut down the rumour mills of the town which were rampant over this fire. Now I just pray that they young people involved in this are dealt with effectively. I am sure there will be lots of nay say-ers to my comment but the fact that they have been nailed so quickly makes me very happy. They were brazen to have done this in broad daylight with vehicles parked beside that building and traffic everywhere. For the 20 yr old involved. This is no child. I hope he gets the book thrown at him. Glad his name is published!
jewels1982 2/9/2013 9:27:24 AM Report

Both of these people should be made to pay for the emergancy services. I am sure there is a lot of community work that can be done. If they are hard on them then maybe others will think before they break the law.
Prrrrrrr 2/9/2013 9:40:33 AM Report

Who knows where to find information on costs?

Like this fire for example. How would you find out what the bottom line is on an investigation?
There must be a way that whoever is involved with this case documents the case number so they can track the cost at the end of the investigation. I mean from the moment the police arrive and there is an incident number assigned until the case is closed.

Another question...
Is Sault Ste Marie charging for services now? For example...someone is fishing on the St Mary's River and breaks thru the ice...would the person be billed for that rescue. Some communities are doing that...is ours?

B Boy 2/9/2013 11:14:37 AM Report

Does anybody know the details of the crime? Were there witnesses, how was it started specifically?

I'm just wondering because the skeptic in my is coming out. It's possible that the fire could have been started by homeless people keeping warm or from people cooking drugs and this is being reported as arson to skew crime or demographic stats.

For those armchair heros on sootoday, I'm not accusing anyone or throwing anyone under the bust, just being inquisitive.
Bad Dawg 2/9/2013 12:08:43 PM Report

Prrrr, I think a rail company just got a bill for a fire when the train brakes started a fire
firefly42 2/9/2013 12:23:00 PM Report

I was thinking the same thing B Boy! They could have been trying to keep warm, and some will say they shouldn't have been there, but what if they are homeless and had nowhere else to go? We don't know the details or their situation in life, so don't judge.
Prrrrrrr 2/9/2013 12:35:25 PM Report

Thanks Bad Dawg...
I heard it happened in Scugog and I don't think the citizens were informed about the new bylaw. That's why I was asking...seems to me that building should have had some sort of security. Just like a lot of empty buildings in this city. Old schools, a hospital...we need a bylaw that makes owners take precautions when it comes to large vacant buildings. It took a long time to put that one out, lots of money. Should be interesting to see how it turns out.

Entity...
Why do you post insults? If you have nothing intellegent to ad to the article, why not type up your response then delete it instead of posting!!!
Brianne 2/9/2013 1:20:02 PM Report

Entity.. wow, how old are you 17,18 ?

There are other ways than paying with physical money to repay a debt caused by such actions. Yes, they should be paying for many many years of the damage they caused............. think about it, you might come up with something.

Why should they be put in jail , again, at the taxpayers expense and get a free ride, free meals, a place to stay and call home for a very long time.

Seems to me, with your insinuations of what may have taken place in that building.......... that you know some of what took place in there.
Entity 2/9/2013 1:26:06 PM Report

I'm saying that trying to get people who have no income and no prospects, to pay for thousands of dollars of damage is an exercise in futility.

You don't expect penniless kids in Ethiopia to buy themselves food, shelter, and medical supplies, but you expect penniless kids in Canada to pay for factories, and emergency services.

Give your heads a shake.

Brianne 2/9/2013 1:36:07 PM Report

There are other ways of paying back a debt to society. No, not jail....... think about it.
I'm In 2/9/2013 2:36:13 PM Report

Since the courts are backlogged, the correctional facilities are full, the young offender will get youth probation, and the adult will get adult probation and community service thanks to the bleeding heart politicians in power.
Slim Shady 2/9/2013 2:37:41 PM Report

@Prrrrrrr

I understand the point you are trying to make about charging for services, ie. do we charge for stupidity? One thing though, comparing a person who is fishing and breaks through the ice (bad judgment)and two delinquent youths who purposely break in to a building (that doesn't belong to them) and sets it on fire is not the same.

These people should be charged equally.... it doesn't make that she is 17 and he is 22. At 17 years old I was running my own business and working 2 other jobs. At 22 I was almost finished my University degree in Engineering (which I paid for all myself with no help). These youths had a choice in life - they decided to make the wrong ones. It do not feel sorry one iota for them. Life is tough for everyone... not just them.

That being said, I agree that locking them up for years on end is not the answer. It is still early in their lives that Society can intervene, and we should. Mandatory drug and addiction counseling, extended probation and a hell of a lot of community service to work off the cost of emergency services (which by the way can be determined).

If they slip up and break the law again, they should be shown the harder side of the judicial system.

Their actions were not minor and could of cause injury or death of someone, either in the building or responding to the fire.

Ricatoni 2/9/2013 3:06:00 PM Report

slimshady: for a guy who says he has a degree, you must of failed english.....
WOW....I detect some heavy Bullsh%$ in your comments......LMAO!!!!!!!!
lavendalilly 2/9/2013 3:36:21 PM Report

Sorry- I agree with Slim on this one. I understand exactly what he/she is saying. These kids that were charged- they had a choice. Whether they grew up in a broken home or not, they had a choice. Whether they were looking to prove some kind of wild point or were dared to do so- they had a choice. I am sure more kids that were involved will slowly rise to the surface.

I am just not sure what the point of it really was- its going to be torn down anyways.
lavendalilly 2/9/2013 3:44:09 PM Report

Entity has an excellent point aswell- how will they pay if they do not have the money?
Sue the parents? What if the parents are on disability? What if there are no parents? What if..what if...what if...

Just like Slim said- community service and harsher laws that will help prevent reoccurances.
flyfisher1 2/9/2013 3:56:57 PM Report

my only question is why?
Johnedater 2/9/2013 3:57:00 PM Report

Ricatoni....don't criticize people for not being able to spell because you can't either...it is "must have" and not must of....don't judge so quickly!
rcssm69 2/9/2013 6:39:55 PM Report

Brianne...are there other ways to payback society??? Of course, but the Courts don't play that game! They will impose some ridiculous penalty that will have some ridiculous conditions! Like don't start fires while on probation!!!
rcssm69 2/9/2013 6:43:20 PM Report

Ricatoni...rather than post insults...argue your point! Unless you don't have one, then just shut up!
There is a choice! What could you possibly blame for someone's past that would force them to set a fire on a vacant building??? Come on...throw me a bone here!!!
Entity 2/9/2013 10:11:56 PM Report

Community service isn't a viable option for repayment; not if one expects to be repaid in whole.

Let's ballpark a figure, for damages and costs of emergency personnel... A conservative estimate: $250,000.

Minimum wage: What is it now? $10.50?

$250,000 / 2 people = $125,000 per person.

$125,000 / $10.50 = 11904 hours of community service at minimum wage to pay their share.

11904hrs / 2080 (work hours in a year when working 40 hrs week) = 5 years, 262 days

Yes, let's expect these kids to work 40 hours a week for 5 years, 262 days, with no wage, to pay for the damage.

While we're being unrealistic, they better get a 2nd full time job so they can eat.
lavendalilly 2/9/2013 11:50:24 PM Report

As if community service will actually take place to re pay back the debt created by this mess- they will get community service- just not towards paying off the building they burnt. I am very curious what will happen to them- especially the boy that is not a young offender-
jojoe71 2/9/2013 11:53:09 PM Report

Let's be serious. Both of these kids will get probation at the most. The cost for lawyers and court costs will be in the thousands. Add that to the cost of putting out the fire. Should've let the building burn to the ground and just protected the surrounding buildings. Next month they do what they had planned.....clear the property...end of story.
