Thunderbirds axe head coach

Saturday, February 09, 2013   by: Staff
Thunderbirds relieve LaVoy as head coach

Warren LaVoy has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Soo Thunderbirds, the club announced earlier today.

The organization would like to thank Warren for the significant contribution he has made.

Thunderbirds general manager Kevin Cain is taking over the coaching duties for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, assistant coach Dennis Bolton, strength and conditioning coach Micheal Barbeau, and goalie coaches Billy Thompson and Miles Williams will remain in their respective roles.

Rewind was one of the best hockey coaches I had growing up, all the best to ya!

I think they need more help then that, they want more fans???They have to do more advertizing to get fans out from Sudbury ,out west and in michigan,no sense advertizing or mentioning it here in the Soo Star ,(Soo hockey players beware )at the first of the season they want you to try out for the team, they will even let you make the team (TAKE YOUR MONEY FOR THE YEAR )Then part way through they will cut you (keep your money)then get players from out of town with you no were to play.Like i commented before they were doing fine with our locals and each time you cut a local you are losing approx. 15 to 20 fan base people.Don't tell us its hockey or a business ,Were are these kids going after this ? 99.9 are going to school and onto the regular work force.WE ran all locals before and did fine.Read Randy Rushons write up??

So they fire the coaches last year ? Fire the coach this year ? The Captian and players quit and with all the turmoil on this team the manager stays ? is it not ultimatly his responseablilty for what happens . Maybe he should be fired ?
They didn't have problems like this untill the team changed hands a couple of years ago
sinikka 2/9/2013 10:01:32 AM Report

With 10 players on their current roster that are not from the soo, it is no wonder they are suffering at the gate. Sad that a hardworking volunteer like warren lavoie is canned to cover up the inabilities of the General Manager. Good luck to you Rewind, you were the fall guy.

This story is kinda funny!! First of all Warren does get paid to coach so don't feel to bad for him cause he's still gonna get paid!! But on the flip side of the story the greyhounds fire Stapleton and the greyhounds are doing amazing now and everyone who was bashing the hounds a month ago have jumped on the band wagon calling Dubas a genius!!!! Lavoy wasn't getting much out of these young men just like Stapleton wasn't so he had to go and now everyone is blaming Kevin Cain lololololololol. Dont worry coach Cain once you start getting the best out of this team you'll be a hero once again!!!! Lol. And from what I know I'm sure Cain doesn't make a cent!!!
mehardy 2/9/2013 10:48:49 AM Report

Oh and further more it should be said that Warren is a wonderful guy and treated the players with respect and there's not to many players if any who'll say a bad word about him!! It just didn't work out and in this business it happens all the time!!!!

Sometimes change is good for a team. I think that you need to change things up in practices to keep players interested. I personally thought Warren was an awesome coach and truly enjoyed going to the Thunderbirds hockey games when he was involved. I enjoyed watching them and so do my children. It's fantastic hockey whether they win or lose. All our local teams are acceptional or they would not be there. Get out and support these teams whether you have relatives or sons playing. Maybe some Soo spirit and pride will get our players MOJO going. Without the crowds pumping them up out there, it must be quite heartbreaking for them as well. Get off your couches, keep your opinions to yourself and support local hockey no matter where these kids are from. We are a HOCKEY TOWN!!!! With that said "Let's continue to play hockey!!!" Go Thunderbirds Go!!!

Clumsy, it's where are the kids, not were, just trying to help. TBird's are doing okay, but not quite like the teams of the past. Can't win em all. You will likely see Dennis Bolton as the next coach. Proud Mom, Russon is the sports guy for the weekly Sault This Week. Or online too. Randy Russon .com. Something like that. Welcome to "The Soo".
Ricatoni 2/9/2013 12:25:24 PM Report

If there is ten out of town kids on the team, how is it this is called a local hockey team???you would think with all the talent in the Soo they would have no problem filling their lines with local kids no???Its no wonder they dont have a fan base ????This like many other sports has become to political and way to expensive for most families. it is to bad because hockey use to be fun to ????? your better off to take your kid to local out door rink and just have fun....forget all this thousand dollar this thousand dollar that use to be a fun sport now it is just about prestige and money.......Only those families who have the money play now, the real talent or the ones whos families cant afford it just end up leaving ....... Money and Greed is the real motivation for management, not whats best for the kids. Ive seen this many many times not just with hockey either, parents pay the big bucks and their kid makes the team, however the kids with the real talent dont make the cut cause their parents dont have the cash.......why do you think these kids leave for the USA or Europe????
MisterT 2/9/2013 12:44:05 PM Report

Local team for local players?? Not really, its just a medium to feed the ego of certain individuals. I think Cain is covering up his own miscues, some thing is not right, even last year when they had all the troubles and they fired Mizzi and Henderson, Cain the GM disappears from the media, no comment, and walks away unscathed, Not right, isn't he the one who is ultimately responsable? He's the one who put these people in these positions. Yet he walks away the hero in the media when the team wins? Seems like he only wants to take reponsability for the good and not the bad. The game has changed folks don't think the aged Bolton is the guy to lead this team
zr800 2/9/2013 5:36:44 PM Report

if CAIN was on that bus when SOME of the coaches and some of the players were drinking why did they loose ther jobs but not CAIN is he not the one responsible for the TEAM ??????????????JUST ASKING
Norm 2/9/2013 5:58:13 PM Report

Ricatoni, the Greyhounds are a local team, they have two or three players from the Soo. MisterT, you think that age has anything to do with coaching. Bolton is probably 62, he would be young and capable enough to coach the team. Rigatoni, use spell check.
