Top Ontario biathletes to compete in Sault this weekend

Friday, February 08, 2013   by: Staff

Ontario's best compete in Sault Ste. Marie

Five local cadets will be part of the 88 top biathlete cadets from across Ontario who will converge on Sault Ste Marie to compete at the 2013 Regional Cadet Biathlon on Saturday, February 9 and Sunday the10th at the Rod and Gun Club on Connor Rd.

These sea, army and air cadets represent 285 cadet corps or squadrons and 17,000 cadets from across Ontario.

They have earned the opportunity to compete after advancing from their area biathlon competitions with their sights on earning a spot to compete at the Cadet Nation Biathlon in March.

The five local cadets are Shawn Clement, Dalton Hertz and Andre Breckenridge of the 155 Borden Gray Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and Sarah Gaudette, Austin Solar of the 2310 Royal Canadian Army Cadet.

They will be skiing 1-2 km loops through Ontario’s only nationally approved biathlon course which includes steep assents and long hills with numerous turns and switch backs to challenge the cadets skiing skills and their physical fitness.

After completing one ski loop they will enter the range and attempt to knock down five falling plate targets using a .22 calibre rifle and their marksmanship skills while compensating for their accelerated heart rates.

For each target missed means a trip around the penalty loop.

Then they are off to do this two more times around the course.

Saturday competition will consist of teams of three racing from 12 to 3 p.m.

Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. will be individual races were the cadets ranging in age from 12 to 18, both male and female will race in their own categories.
