'How to be awesome' lesson from Mikayla Farkas and Cherokee Hoke

Friday, February 08, 2013   by: Donna Hopper

Two bright and innovative White Pines Collegiate and Vocational School students have just scored huge 'awesome' points in the eyes of the student body and faculty.

Mikayla Farkas and Cherokee Hoke, who are both Grade 12 students enrolled in the Communications Technology program, are in the midst of producing a year-long White Pines spirit video.

As part of the video project, the girls wanted to include footage of a flash mob.

At the same time, Laurentian University in Sudbury put out a province-wide call for submissions to its Flash Mob Challenge.

So Farkas and Hoke, along with some help from the school's senior dance class, gathered the entire school, including the student body, faculty, staff, band and mascot, and shot the flash mob video in the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre.

White Pines Principal, Joey Turco, told SooToday.com that 41 schools in total from across Ontario submitted video entries to Laurentian's Flash Mob Challenge for a chance to win a $10,000 dream prom.

School officials found out earlier this week that Farkas and Hoke's submission had been chosen as the winner.

However, it was not announced to the students until yesterday's student assembly as Laurentian representatives Ryan Demers and Sachelle Violette - dressed in their finest prom attire - presented the girls with the $10,000 cheque.

That afternoon at lunch, the two girls met with the school's prom committee to start plans.

Although they're unsure of the spending parameters of Laurentian's sponsorship of the prom, Turco told us that Farkas and Hoke hope to use some of the funds to support a child the school sponsors in a developing country, contribute to the White Pines Scholarship Fund, and leave some in the bank for next year's prom.

"They're very smart girls and I'm extremely proud of them for wanting to allocate some of the winnings to other areas," Turco said.

It does me so proud to hear the accomplishment of these two outstanding individuals. They took an initiative and went for it and are now unselfishingly reaping the rewards; it speaks volume of their character. Qudos to their family for bringing up two wonderful members of our community. Today's youth have the potential within their grasp to affective change the world; I think Mikayla and Cherokee are just beginning that process. Much future success.
