Injured moose left to suffer. Kirkland Lake man fined

Thursday, February 07, 2013   by: Staff

A Kirkland Lake man has been fined a total of $5,000 and prohibited from applying in the moose selective harvest system for 10 years, after being convicted of five charges related to the killing of a bull moose.

Douglas Johnson pleaded guilty to unlawfully hunting a bull moose, using prohibited lead shot to hunt big game, using two types of prohibited hunting weapons, and the unlawful possession of moose parts.

Court heard that in October 2009, Johnson was hunting small game in South Lorrain Township when he came upon a large bull moose with a broken hind leg.

Even though Johnson did not have a bull moose validation tag, he decided to hunt the injured animal.

Using a 12-gauge shotgun with small #6 lead pellets, he shot the moose twice but did not kill it.

He also tried to dispatch the moose with a four-metre long wooden spear.

As the moose was still alive, Johnson stoned it with large rocks, which stunned the animal.

Johnson left the area and the moose died later at the site.

Approximately two weeks later, Johnson returned to the site and collected the large antlers and attached skull, pictures of which he posted online.

Evidence during the lengthy investigation was collected with the assistance of the ministry’s canine team.

Justice of the Peace Ted Hodgins heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Haileybury, on January 31, 2013.

What does it take to get a life time ban?? He could have called the MNR and tracked it with them. When they dispatched it he could've had his trophy...... if the GW didn't want it. POOR CHOICES..... by his hunting tactics and the judges sentencing tactics

5,000 was not enough, what a cruel thing to do to an already injured animal.
He should have been banned from hunting for life.

Absolutely disgusting. I agree $5000 isn't enought for the torture he put that bull through

Poor moose. That is just sick. For sure it should have been a lifetime ban for this guy!

I hope when he gets to the pearly gates, a big bull moose is standing there waiting for him, "well hello there, remember me?" and then he pulls the lever to the long slide down to hotel hell!

thats something my 8 year old would say??
Just Curious 2/7/2013 1:12:27 PM Report

This is a man who has no conscience whatever and should never be allowed to own a weapon of any kind any more and should be sentenced to spend at least 2 years living with a moose family. Apparenntly he has no sense of family in his past and living this way might make an impression on him,,,altho I doubt it. He sounds like some one who would get enjoyment out of clubbing baby seals....A##hole...

I agree should have never be allowed to hunt again has no respect for the animals which give him life alot of people could have been fed from that bull and the bulls life would have had meaning This man disgraced this animal taking only his head for a trophy

burned.... are you asking a question? Ask your 8 year old what a question mark is. Uncalled for.
Flyers08 2/7/2013 1:51:45 PM Report

This idiot should be banned from firearms and hunting forever. Guys like that ruin it for everyone else in the long run. Loser!
duster_b 2/7/2013 2:05:55 PM Report

$5,000 is not enough, should get lengthy jail time, makes it bad for all hunters....maybe should put him in room with real moose hunters and see how well he does

Funny our American friends do not get the same kind of justice when they break our hunting laws. They pay a fine and are right back at.

It looks like @burned got burned! lol.

I notice a couple of his posts were removed which is good because he is the one who usually sounds like an 8 year old with name calling and mocking of everyone's comments.

Karma in action.

the name phycopath comes to mind...sounds like he was getting his rocks off with the torture. Should be a lifetime ban. Makes you wonder what kind of friends this idiot has. Scarry thought.

Yes, I was also wondering how this disgusting coward treats his family. What a monster.

May the fleas of a thousand moose nest in his armpits.

This story is sickening! That poor moose was already suffering and that idiot just added to his misery and fear with a prolonged, cruel death.

I'm glad the MNR caught him, but he should be banned for life from hunting.
