Batchewana First Nation Chief Dean Sayers won re-election in an extremely close Band Council election race, defeating challenger Karen Bird by a mere six votes (436 to 430) in elections held Tuesday.
SooToday.com was informed of the election results by Batchewana First Nation Wednesday morning.
39 candidates ran to fill eight Band Council seats.
Winning re-election for Band Councillor were Gary Roach Jr., Harvey Bell, Peter Sewell and Vernon Syrette.
Other winners of Band Councillor seats are SooToday.com editorialist Joseph Corbiere, Stacy Tijerina, Lynn Tegosh and Claude Paquin.
Three of the four new Councillors, Corbiere, Tijerina and Tegosh, are lawyers.
The term of office for Chief Sayers and Band Councillors commences today, for a two-year term.

fatafr 2/6/2013 10:49:36 AM ReportWith a vote of 436 to 430 with 12 ballots spoiled, Karen Bird owes it to herself and to those that voted for her to be asking for a re-count.
Tom_Bom 2/6/2013 11:17:33 AM ReportWow! That was close!
Niigaanis 2/6/2013 11:17:57 AM Reportword to the wise Frank
keep your nose out of our business and stick to the political concerns of your constituents
Wicket 2/6/2013 11:24:19 AM ReportCrap!
Wisenheimer 2/6/2013 11:29:39 AM ReportFrank, sounds like a threat from our FN neighbours. What's new!
Ginga 2/6/2013 11:48:30 AM ReportRe count You know how they do things don't trust them
Sofahorse 2/6/2013 11:49:31 AM Reportand a reply like that of Niigaanis is the reason why people lose compassion to the cause. "keep your noise out of our business but why aren't you paying us more for our housing, water system, basic needs in life to survive."
burned 2/6/2013 11:58:49 AM ReportNiigaanis....keep your hands out of my pockets and we will keep out nose out of your business.

"...keep your nose out of our business and stick to the political concerns of your constituents..."
Why would you say this to someone? It is common when any election is that close with spoiled ballots to demand a recount? You want to make sure in a DEMOCRACY that the people's wishes are correctly acknowledged. After all what's the difference - It sounds like they were both liked a lot and thought upon as ideal Leaders of their Band?
It sounds to me that you don't like when accurate records are asked because it is so much easier to sweep stuff under the carpet and let "the powerful families" and their poisonous nepotism
undermine the rest of your Band members... Maybe you are related to Chief Spence?

After comments like yours, you have real nerve asking anybody, especially non-natives for our support for your never ending causes. Unbelievable!
burned 2/6/2013 12:53:09 PM ReportIts similar to a teenager telling his parents "I hate you!"...but then asking for the car and $20 bucks 2 minutes later.
Beej 2/6/2013 1:08:46 PM ReportA recount? No!, I think more like a re-vote with that many spoiled ballots and it being that close.
This would be the right thing to do under the circumstances.
SooToday Moderator 2/6/2013 1:22:10 PM ReportHello posters,
Let's try and keep comments on topic and civil please.
Thank you and carry on...
Bad Dawg 2/6/2013 1:35:22 PM Reportburned.... only applies if the parents stole the land the house and car are on from the teenager.
Grump 2/6/2013 1:45:57 PM ReportDean may well wish that Karen had won the election. With many of Dean's posse gone and three Lawyers on council. life may become very difficult.
burned 2/6/2013 1:46:57 PM ReportHahahaha
rockfeather 2/6/2013 1:57:12 PM Reportthat's how dean became chief - he lost to vernon syrette by one vote, appealed the election, did a recount and found more votes for himself - its worth a shot
redranger 2/6/2013 2:53:02 PM ReportWhat is the salary of the Chief and councillors?
mac2 2/6/2013 3:22:36 PM Reportsalary is 90 million per year, woot, and you all pay for it! bahahahahaahahahaha

Niigaanis 2/6/2013 3:50:39 PM Reportmy comment to Frank was a reminder to him that he is an elected official of SSMarie and as such he needs to be aware that when posting comments about another elected official or election whether negative or positive can reflect or appear to be that of the entire city....quit getting your panties in a bunch...sheeesh
right wing 2/6/2013 4:38:58 PM ReportThat's not how it came across and "Frank" is also a private citizen and that is how the comment was made not as a representative of the city.
So what was you explanation of the veiled threat again....
Niigaanis 2/6/2013 5:19:38 PM Reportthat's rich, a cautionary word of warning and it is taken as a threat....hate to see what would happen if I had actually made a threat...oh that's right there are policies pertaining to that that Sootoday enforces... I can only surmise that because the post was left the moderators did not see it as a threat of any kind...it was nothing like that which was sent to the young woman for her involvement in the IMN movement....and that leaves me to wonder that since I read a comment several weeks ago on here where a poster made the same remarks as was sent to Leslie.....perhaps the law enforcement agency needs to review the IP address from that post--it would be a good starting point for them....just saying is all
right wing 2/6/2013 5:30:15 PM Report..thus the word veiled meaning your "cautionary word of warning" can and was interpreted by others as not what you claim...in the future you should choose your cautionary words more carefully.
Tom_Bom 2/6/2013 7:00:22 PM Report@ Niigaanis
That first post you made was a veiled threat, plain and simple. How can you expect people to support the Idle No More movement when you threaten us, tell us to stay out of your business, and then ask for more money?
I'm sorry, but inch by inch Idle No More is losing the hearts of the general public due to comments like yours.
We all have the right of freedom of speech for both your affairs or ours. You also have freedom of speech, but not hate-speech.
It's a shame that your comment is going un-punished as you directly threatened someone. But Sootoday will turn a blind eye as they always do because of your chosen affiliation with Idle No More.
Being a part of the idle no more movement or choosing to live on a reserve does not give you a free pass to threaten people.
ackw 2/6/2013 7:39:33 PM ReportIf it was a threat it would cost you" 5poached fish and a rabbit to the elders
Niigaanis 2/6/2013 10:40:50 PM Reportagain there was no threat intended. If Frank feels threaten then I owe HIM an apology, no one else.
All I wanted was to caution Frank on making comments against FN's people or their activities. I've seen several of his posts and was not impressed that an elected official of SSMarie would post such B.S.
I've forwarded to the Mayor several of these posts he made over the last few weeks that pertain to Batchewana and requested the Mayor to review the posts and asked if this was in fact the stance/feeling of the elected officials of SSMarie.
I'm sure Frank can attest to this as the Mayor promised to investigate and to speak with him. She went on to indicate that Frank's comments were not the position of the city's but rather was posted a private citizen. My position is that he is an elected official and as such must conduct himself accordingly.
Batchewana and Garden River will have a better idea of him and City Hall's position when dealing with them.
Batchewana's election has no bearing on SSMarie so why would he bother to comment?
