More layoffs coming to TenarisAlgomaTubes
Friday, February 01, 2013 by: Donna Hopper
SooToday.com recently received information from a number of our loyal readers regarding rumours of additional layoffs affecting employees at TenarisAlgomaTubes.
Last month, we confirmed the "temporary reduction of 83 employees" with TenarisAlgomaTubes communication spokesperson, Chris Belsito.
Today, Belsito told us that an additional 70 hourly employee layoffs will take effect on Tuesday, February 19, 2013.
The downward market trend that resulted in last month's layoffs has continued, Belsito said, and the company is now forced to adjust its shifts to meet the reduced consumer product demand.
"We don't take the decision lightly and fully understand the impact [these layoffs have] on our employees," he told us. "But they're necessary in order to make the facility sustainable and competitive for the future."
On top of these upcoming layoffs, TenarisAlgomaTubes will undergo a one-week facility shutdown starting Sunday, February 10.
The company will take advantage of the week-long shutdown to perform necessary facility maintenance, normally done in August, and will allow TenarisAlgomaTubes to concentrate existing product orders in the remaining three weeks of February.

DOMAR 2/1/2013 4:23:45 PM ReportThat sucks. Fell sorry for these people and there families. Let's hope they get called back soon!!!
sitka_archie 2/1/2013 5:19:44 PM ReportYup, can't wait to go in and get the place a little fixed up so they can run a little better down the road. I don't mind the 30+ $ an hour either.
Thank god for contractors.
I'm In 2/1/2013 6:18:49 PM ReportWhat are you three knobs that posted above this talking about, you don't even how much these employees make an hour, with the price oil fluctuating daily and the markets flooded with oil, companies don't drill therefore would not need the product that Tenaris produces (casing for oil wells). As for the contractors there are none, read the news article.
Norm 2/1/2013 6:33:01 PM ReportSometimes contracting out is not all what its cracked up to be. Essar is expierencing that now.
I'm In 2/1/2013 9:24:44 PM ReportEssar hired former St. Mary's Paper workers, no one is out of a job at Essar, they can contract out as long as no one is laid off, in fact there are Essar pensioners double dipping in that steel plant.
sitka_archie 2/1/2013 9:36:18 PM Report"Im in"- Im a contractor. I was referring to a maintanence/construction contractor. And I know exactly how much I get paid.
DOMAR 2/1/2013 11:21:02 PM ReportI'M IN YOU ARE A CLOWN. MY COMMENT HAD NOTHING TO DO CONTRACTING!! CAN'T YOU READ YOU DONKEY!!
old-cat33 2/1/2013 11:51:10 PM ReportHey,Hey,Let's get along now. I used to go in the odd time for Plibrico/Lee Wilson and work the shut downs in the tube mill. They used to be in August for almost two weeks back then? Demolition was a dirty job but 7- 12 hour shifts at union wage was just what the doctor ordered.
But to save money they went to 3- 8 hour shifts later on ...Boo!
Some of my chums worked for the tube mill and for a while they were getting laid off every spring for a few months. Low orders nothing out of the ordinary.
Saultguy41 2/1/2013 11:57:19 PM ReportI am a Tenaris employee and this is the nature of the beast in the oil and gas industry, I have been through three such layoffs periods and have been layed off in 2009 and I am in maintenance. If contractors show up there while people are layed off on this week shut down you can bet there will be hell too pay by the union. oh and I'm In, read the posts before flapping your gums.
jojo12345 2/2/2013 2:10:58 AM Reportdont argue everyone will be out of job soon
Berty 2/2/2013 4:30:40 AM ReportI hope for everyone that got layed off, goes back to work soon, and for the dumb new employees that might have made big purchases after being hired, I hope you get by...it's best for our whole city when people have jobs! So I'm hoping for the best, for everyone!!!
Off topic, but now this is when City councils decision to hike everyone's PUC comes into affect people...75% Increase next 10 years!!!
Don't you love our Mayor and council now!!!
willfred 2/2/2013 10:20:49 AM ReportHearing rumours in the mill and then finding confirmation on the web sucks. They should of told ALL of their employees before the media.
justmeh 2/2/2013 12:14:08 PM Reportfunny how they blame contractors for thier lay offs, like the contractors have anything to do with production, half those people in that mill dont even know how a union is run, they just know how to bitch n complain, layoff happen everywhere suck it up little babies!
SaultJammer 2/3/2013 8:04:50 AM Report@Saultguy41 - i used to work for the Tube Mill about 8 yrs ago and i was also a Millwright in there. We would go through the same temporary production staff layoffs every year due to the fluctuating oil and gas drilling and exploration market. When it did happen, the contractors would come in because there would be little time to get a lot done. If you happened to read your collective agreement for once, you would see that there are conditions set aside for the allowance of third-party (contractors) maintenance workers. Without the additional help there would be no mill to go back to work. You cannot perform major rebuilds or install new lines with just the local maintenance crews. I know because when i was working there we only had 2 or 3 Millwrights per department, per shift at any given time. The exception being the Hot Mill (they would have 5 or 6 because of the greater amount of machinery and equipment running all the time). Regardless, you just cannot perform the necessary work with only the in-house maintenance crews. There's just not enough of them. - I was once told something by my former supervisor (Norm D.) "We (millwrights) are a necessary evil". In other words, millwrights do not make the company money; production workers make the company money. Hence the name {"Production" worker}. But without the lowly millwright the mills would not keep running. Breakdowns in addition to every day wear and tear make the millwright position absolutely necessary. So if a company needs to bring in some additional contractors temporarily in order to get maintenance or rebuilds or new equipment install jobs completed within a certain time-frame then you should just accept that fact... because if you successed in preventing them from coming in then you may just find yourself out of a job period. Think about it for a moment; there would be nobody to fix the equipment that you run... no working equipment means no worker necessary - period. Ultimately temporary layoff becomes permanent layoff - period...
sumosah 2/3/2013 2:26:05 PM Reportjammer language about contracters and peoples work experienced have changed since you worked there in the past 8 years ...
Secondly yes layoffs are part of this INdusrty and it does suck, only thing is before the company posts things like this it would be nice to be notified as employees by the company of these kinds of things before reading it at home before coming back on your rotation ...
That is what really hurts the morale and psyche of those employees,
hank 2/3/2013 9:37:19 PM ReportAt I'm In- I work there, know what I make and have a good idea on work that goes out. Only a knob would believe everything he reads...............
