Sault-dissing OHL ref receives disciplinary action

Wednesday, January 30, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

OHL referee, Joe Monette, who recently had some less-than-kind words to tweet about Sault Ste. Marie has received disciplinary action for the social media faux pas.

The incident took place while Monette was in Sault Ste. Marie to officiate the Friday, January 25 Soo Greyhounds vs Windsor Spitfires game.

Full details regarding the disciplinary action have been posted on SooToday.com's sports page.

It would seem some believe we in this fine city are petty and thin skinned enough to need protection from a narrow minded person. Hell if just speaking poorly of our city is sufficient, we would have a good number of our very own residents expelled. I have had family members from right here die to protect this man's right to free speech. Was it all for naught?

The Soo made the news in Ottawa--everyone knows that people in the Soo are good natured and won't take this the wrong way--Remember what Eric Lindros thought of the Soo--and our reaction to him lol--all in good fun

So when does this lad come to town again? I think it could be fun.

The guy was just joking .. come on that was a little harsh.

It may be harsh, but his poor judgement in making this statement makes me question how fairly he might call the game. He should be a better role model at all times.

I didn't know refs from the same city(Windsor) could ref games when Windsor is playing.

I think the comments are in poor taste however, it begs the question why there are so many negative comments made about the "Soo" for the past number of years. I think that a bit of introspection is needed in that being closed minded and closed off to outsiders does breed a bit of resentment.

He's just making an observation! Don't be so uptight and sensitive--there's two more words for ya..

Ok yes. So most of us still have teeth here.

It not 'exactly' a hicktown. We have docks, the studio10 and wingnuts. The studio is dirty and smelly. Docks is full of little kids, but good once in a while. And Wingnuts, although they play really bad music, their wings are really good! Not exactly the healthiest choice, but it's good to have once a month.

And yes, most people need to workout more here.

Heard this many times over the years, hey Buddy, you from 'the Soo' or, hey, you ever been to 'the Soo'. I think the Ref made a foolish call when tweeting about what he claims is a hick town. I think it was supposed to be comical, obviously not very professional. Maybe under the influence, who knows.
