Much of PUC's big move completed over weekend (7 photos)

Tuesday, January 29, 2013   by: Darren Taylor

“It went excellent. It went very, very well, no hitches.”

That’s how Sault Ste. Marie PUC president and CEO Brian Curran described the utility company’s move from its Queen Street location to its new home at 500 Second Line East.

The downtown office location closed at 1 p.m. Friday and operations at the new, state-of-the-art office officially began at 1 p.m. Monday.

Curran told SooToday.com Tuesday morning that the move was in progress over the weekend.

“It was a lot of work. We moved customer service, the locates people, our health and safety people from the service centre. That was done starting Friday afternoon and everything was moved in over the weekend.”

Curran said staff was still working up until around 8 p.m. Sunday night getting everything set up.

Staff members, including PUC Manager of Finance Mark Faught and Jennifer Greco, shown in our photo gallery, were busily engaged in their duties and enthusiastic about their new digs.

The move was meticulously planned, Curran said.

“We’ve had probably about a year of weekly planning meetings, going over what had to be done, the steps we needed to take to accomplish everything. It’s been a long, intensive planning process. Everyone in the company has been involved in some fashion, from where they want to have their desks, and so on.”

The front part of the building is fully occupied, and in the back, Curran said, health and safety, locates personnel and marketing staff are in place.

Curran added: “We haven’t moved our linemen and water people or our stores yet. That won’t happen until next week, likely. There weren’t any major power outages, there were minor ones which we have from time to time, we had water breaks which we responded to as normal, but no hitch in terms of service to customers.”

Have there been many calls from customers as to where to go to pay their bills or make other customer service inquiries?

“Not that I’m aware of,” Curran said.

“The public was pretty well informed about the move. We left one of our boxes downtown in front of the post office on Queen Street so that people who can’t make it up here still have a place where they can drop off their bill payments.”

Upon entering the front lobby of the new building, one is impressed by the height and brightness of the area, where the bill payment counter and customer service desks are clearly located.

Speaking to us in his office, Curran said: “The offices are built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. One of the requirements is to minimize energy consumption.”

Curran pointed to the lighting in his own office and the adjacent boardroom as examples.

The lights automatically adjust to the level of light coming in from outside.

The lights automatically turn right down on a bright, sunny day, and automatically compensate on overcast days.

As for the PUC’s old Queen Street location, put up for sale for $1.5 million, Curran told us: “We have a buyer. It’s all I can say right now, but hopefully we will close the sale April 30.”

Curran will be retiring Thursday, to be succeeded as president and CEO by Dominic Parrella.

Curran moved to Sault Ste. Marie from Saskatchewan in 2000 and directed the PUC since then.

“It’s been great,” Curran said, adding he plans to stay and enjoy retirement in Sault Ste. Marie.

You need not remind us of this colossal waste of money and I think most would agree.
A lot of it should have been spent on replacing the ancient infrastructure that is causing it's customers major headaches with all the "unplanned outages."
They also still need to return the city's stinky water back to the way it was so you don't have to filter it before you can even drink it, and it doesn't cause skin sores and various other health issues.
After all this was accomplished I could see a new building in the future, but the timing of spending this massive amount of money couldn't have been worse.
It will come back and bite US in the ass.

I agree this building is a total waste of money and the infastructure should have been repaired first. Therefore I believe we should all go to the gathering the PUC management is putting on Wednesday February 27th from 7-9 at the City Hall Russ Ramsey Room per the post on Soo Today January 24th -"Your chance to sit down with PUC management." Let's let them know what we think and how they're going to rectify things.
H.E.T. 1/29/2013 11:19:04 PM Report

I agree, wasted money. Just like the hospital has proved, a new building does not cure an incompetent management. The chemical cocktail they call water smells and tastes like crap, barely drinkable. If it is safe is still questionable and they want us to pay outrageous rates for it. The public forum is a farce the law says they have to do, do don't care about you or your opinion, just your money. Look at the pics and all you see is the second face they all have for the media, ever try talking to them on the phone they are the most ignorant self righteous give us your money and f!@# off SOB's you've ever talk to.
Long and short of it PUBLIC LOSES AGAIN. Just accept that you are going to get raped by gov and big business over and over again.
Number One Son 1/29/2013 11:38:54 PM Report

You can bet those moving on the weekend got weekend premiums and overtime for the move, ..... can this thing get any worse?
Mermaid 1/29/2013 11:49:24 PM Report

Nope, nobody got paid any overtime to move on the weekend.

All such negative Nellies. lol.

I think it is a nice looking building tho, and I bet the clerks at the fancy new payment counter are sure happy they are out of that dingy old place.
At least be happy for them, they are the little guy like me and you.

I find it funny how Sootoday staff will warn or remove comments from the teacher and idle no more protests, yet they allow degrading and negative comments about PUC employees. Is it anyone's fault that works at the PUC that they had to move into a new building? No! Sure, you complainers are dissatisfied, but bashing Curran or Dominic or any other PUC employee is not helpful. And, I know there have been comments left that are exaggerations or outright lies about situations. Just saying, be considerate of your fellow man.

My cousins good friend works for the PUC. He said the big wigs know the company is hated. And they really do not care 1 bit.
Zarm27 1/30/2013 5:43:33 AM Report

One of the best looking buildings in not just the city, but Northern Ontario. Very nice.

I'm looking forward to the public meeting between ratepayers and the PUC in February.
Just wondering how many of you will show up?
rcssm69 1/30/2013 6:43:32 AM Report

JustMe 1234567...
The old place on Queen Street was not dingy one little bit. It's one of the most modern looking buildings in that area, and it's a great location.
Mermaid...
I reread the comments and don't see anything even remotely resembling the Idle no More or Teachers postings. Get a grip!!!
DOMAR 1/30/2013 7:05:57 AM Report

Ay idea what day, time in Feb and where the public meeting will held. Thanks

good old cut and paste!

"The gathering will begin at 7:00 pm and end at 9:00 pm on Wednesday February 27, 2013 in the Russ Ramsay Room at City Hall."

Stevie-E 1/30/2013 10:13:21 AM Report

I am all for new construction to keep the economy going. As an owner of my own business, I find it not a waste of money at all.

News flash to you non-business types. The construction industry supports many local businesses (Restaurants, Bars, Hotels, Parts Distributors, etc.) and not just the contractor. People need to get it out of their heads that you can't keep putting band-aids on things and expect to turn a profit.

The buildings are old and they are combining 3 buildings into on and will eventually sell off the old assets (I think one is sold already)

It may actually increase productivity, efficiencies and quality of service provided at one location, not to mention morale.

Stop complaining...it's nice to see new buildings in this area. We want the image of a new city and not some old steel town with an aging population. People from bigger cities are noticing that this is a great place to do business and may want to bring their operations up here

Hello?!? We are at the hub of the Great Lakes! Let's look at the bigger picture everyone!
