Ontario Hockey League referee has unkind words for Sault fans

Ontario Hockey League referee Joe Monette didn’t do anything to endear himself to Sault Ste. Marie hockey fans after refereeing Friday night’s OHL game between the Soo Greyhounds and Windsor Spitfires.
In a comment posted on Monette’s Twitter page, Monette (@MONZY25) tweeted “Soo Saint Marie, two words, Slim Pickens #noteeth #hicktown #allfaties.”
The comment didn’t take long to reach Sault fans as well as the Greyhounds organization and the official received replies regarding the comment.
Monette has since apologized, via Twitter, for the comment.
“My tweet last night was not meant to be offensive and was meant as a joke between myself,” Monette’s feed read, “and a buddy of mine that lives in the Soo. I apologize if I offended anybody.”
Since, this scandal erupted, Monette has made his his Twitter account private so his tweets are no longer available publicly.
Monette has been an OHL official for six seasons, the past two as a referee.

Well maybe one time I said that I was from a small northern reserve when I was in Sudbury,but that was after the Sault said that they were an English language only city.....LOL!

I guess it doesn't matter what you post, someone will be always offended....I could put you suck on facebook or twitter, and about 10 people would think it is about them....when I could be talking about an inatimate object like a printer....so everyone just needs to leave well enough alone and get over it.
Peelybo 1/28/2013 11:36:32 AM ReportOf course it matters. He was here on business and working as a representative for the OHL. His comments were unprofessional and juvenile. If he wanted to 'make a joke' with his 'buddy' he should have done so privately. Twitter is a well known public forum.
If his intelligence and judgement is that far off, I dont think he has any business working as an OHL official.
I hope he is punished. And embarrassed. Shame on you.

His intelligence and judgement HAVE to be that far off. It is a requirement to officiate in the OHL.

If one of the players or coaches say anything about the way the refs call games they get fined or suspended why should it be any different for them.in others words the players and coaches live here also do they not fine and suspension .

It also makes you wonder if he can ref without prejudice and it shows just how immature he is.
I would question this no matter what city he was tweeting about.
Norm 1/28/2013 5:03:34 PM ReportI played hockey, still do. Refs are just people, usually married with kids, have a Mom&Dad, maybe Grandkids. Some can be jerks, most aren't, some hockey players can be jerks, most aren't. There are a good number of fans who can be jerky, right from Peewee to the Greyhounds. Bottom line, the ref won't be disciplined, the local team won the game, be happy.
