Province remains committed to Sault OLG jobs, says Orazietti
Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by: SooToday.com Staff
The following news release from the office of Sault MPP David Orazietti is in response to a release posted earlier on SooToday.com.
The release in question is from the Public Service Alliance of Canada in support of 65,000 people in the horse racing industry who stand to lose their jobs because of an Ontario government decision.
In it's move to modernize Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) the government of Ontario decided to terminate the Slots at Racetracks program, a move that industry insiders say could spell disaster for it.
We invite our readers to decide for themselves if the release is incorrect or if it suggests that removal of the Slots for Racetracks program threatens jobs in Sault Ste. Marie.

Province delivers new jobs and working to protect OLG jobs in Sault Ste. Marie
Modernization transformation ends $345 million horse racing subsidy re-directed to enhance health care service
SAULT STE. MARIE - A recent news release on Sootoday.com incorrectly suggests that the provincial government’s decision to stop providing the horseracing industry with an annual $345 million subsidy could lead to job losses in Sault Ste. Marie.
The misleading media release could not be further from the truth as the Ontario Lottery and Gaming’s (OLG) modernization process has, thus far, resulted in the creation of jobs in Sault Ste. Marie.
Since 2003 an additional 25 positions have been added at the OLG office in Sault Ste. Marie.
The original commitment and decision to move the lottery and gaming office to the Sault was made by a previous provincial liberal government and the present liberal government remains committed to this decision.
In 2006 David Orazietti, MPP announced the repatriation of lottery ticket finishing jobs originally lost under NDP representation in Sault Ste. Marie.
At the time the province committed to return 40-60 jobs in partnership with OLG and Pollard Banknote Ltd. but has since reached 63 positions locally.
In 2012 the provincial government announced that Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited (CBN) would set up an office in Sault Ste. Marie to provide technology services for OLG’s charitable bingo and gaming business, which is creating another 25 new, high quality local jobs.
On March 20, 2012 David Orazietti, MPP and Rod Phillips, president and CEO of Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) announced a continued commitment to ensuring the OLG office remains in the Sault indefinitely, regardless of a recommendation made in the Drummond Report to consolidate it with the OLG office in Toronto.
“Our government remains entirely committed to protecting provincial jobs in Sault Ste. Marie as well as continuing to create more jobs in the community,” said Orazietti. “If anything, the province’s decision to end the annual $345 million subsidy to the horseracing industry will benefit residents of the Sault as those taxpayer dollars are re-allocated to important health care services, such as hip and knee replacement surgeries or support for more home care.”
With 17 locations, Ontario has more racetracks and provides more public funding than any other place in North America.
Since 1998, nearly $4 billion has been provided to the horseracing industry in the province, including $345 million in 2011-12.
As part of OLG’s modernization process, the government reviewed its support for the horseracing industry and determined that the industry needs to move towards greater self-sufficiency without government support.
Instead of subsidizing the horseracing industry the province will focus on protecting and continuing to improve health care.
The cost of the current horseracing subsidy would pay for over 27,800 hip or knee replacement surgeries or provide over 9 million hours of home care.

kodak11 1/23/2013 3:09:35 PM ReportYa the province remains committed to the soo jobs but what about the people they sell the olg to,are they going to commit to Soo jobs........i dought it?
skipper dave 1/23/2013 3:09:51 PM ReportUm, if you are no longer governing than what? And how do you govern now with the house shut down since October. It's been 16 weeks, am I to believe the civil servants are doing the day to day stuff?
Truck 1/23/2013 3:24:43 PM ReportThe thing mis-leading here...is this whole statement. 25 new job were not created by bringing in CBN....25 people who worked in OLG's Bingo/Customer Service Department simply moved into the positions for CBN....OLG did not hire to replace the staff that went to CBN. Once the private companies start taking on sections of OLG's business....there is nothing making them stay here in the Soo. Towing the party line once again. The rank and file will be sold out to the lowest bidder and their fate is unknown....seems just the highest paid execs will be safe. (obviously)
danno2257 1/23/2013 3:30:35 PM ReportYa you liberal's have realy been comitted=minus $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Justin Tetreault 1/23/2013 3:35:44 PM ReportHmm. Should I listen to David Orazietti or someone who spells doubt with a "gh"?
frogger11 1/23/2013 3:38:31 PM ReportNot all jobs at CBN were given to OLG employees. Please know your facts before posting information here.
Truck 1/23/2013 3:43:01 PM ReportFrogger how many people at CBN came from OLG??
skipper dave 1/23/2013 3:43:19 PM ReportJustin correct, always judge a person by how well he spells or by the number of times he's been promoted.
ROLAND_ROLLY 1/23/2013 3:43:57 PM ReportWho cares about the OLGC, we will probably end up subsidizing to keep it here.
They will probably end up leaving in the next couple of years anyway, leave now so we can get on with it !

They are too used to writing "Give me more of your dough"
kodak11 1/23/2013 3:55:26 PM Reportsorry Mr perfect justin..........doubt, keep following the Fiberals.
molder2 1/23/2013 4:07:38 PM ReportTell me lies, tell me sweet little lies...after this next provincial election the liberals will never be in control again.. Good by Davey Crooked!
OMGWTF 1/23/2013 4:08:26 PM ReportThe OLG have let more people go in the last 3 years than the 25 increase. There are no more senior vp's in town either and the CDN Banknote site is a glorified call center. There are no race track/slot employees in SSM so he's right on that point but it's a mute point at best since the OLG losses in SSM will be great , after the buyer of the lottery operations gets through with their reorganization. Hundreads of OLG jobs will get transferred to them in the first year but after that it will be that company that let's them go, not the government. There are only 3 or 4 companies in the world that can take on the lottery business as described in the RFP and the last thing they will want is duplicate jobs that hit profit.
clane 1/23/2013 4:18:29 PM ReportSorry Davey, but every time your lips move all I hear is Lie, Lie, Lie...
sumosah 1/23/2013 4:22:14 PM Reportsmoke and mirrors
Darkwing 1/23/2013 5:06:12 PM ReportRoland.....I guess it is easy not to care if u don't work there.....bet u wouldnt feel that way if that was where your income came from
OrlandoFlorida 1/23/2013 5:36:31 PM ReportLets be clear here, currently there is 1 VP located in the Soo, in Toronto there is the CEO, the President, the entire senior executive and approximately 20 VP's, so the Soo is the Head Office in name only! Regarding, the ticket printing company BABN, they left the Soo when their contract with OLG was not renewed, the NDP were not the governing party! The jobs at CBN were former OLG employees who moved over, limited net new jobs!
Intwydimayla69 1/23/2013 5:52:40 PM ReportThe OLG is run by the Government. The Government is about Power & Money. The plan is signed, sealed and delivered. The 'roadmap' has been paved for many years and the truth will not allow the Government to reach the intended goal without severe consequences. The calculated and deliberate misdirection to what is really going on, allows the continuation of the current state, while re-aligning strategic key resources needed in order to build the future state. Once complete, the entire Corporation will cease as we know it today. The OLG will become an extension of the AGCO, which will conduct and manage the ‘Private Operators’, who will have licenses to operate within the gaming and lottery realm. OLG will have no ties to the lottery and gaming entity within Ontario. Just as the LCBO controls the sale of all things related to alcohol, without branding itself on every bottle on every shelf. The OLG will manage the gambling industry but will not produce or provide to that industry in any way shape or form, as it does currently. It will simply lay the ground rules to which the ‘franchisees’ must adhere in order to participate. You will not see the OLG logo tied to the ticket you purchase at the corner store. You will not see OLG branded commercials reciting relentlessly about the benefits returned to communities throughout Ontario. OLG will fade behind the scenes in hopes of being forgotten. The private operators will brand themselves and be bound by the rules of the game in order to operate within the jurisdiction of the Province. When a new game is launched, it will be branded by the company that created or commissioned it through a third party provider, which may or may not be located in the Sault. Do not kid yourselves, there is a much larger storm coming to this City than you have been made aware and it is going to cause waves that will touch every corner, and it will be devastating to a vast number of people and businesses. To think that the demise of an industry that feeds off the addictive nature of many is a good thing, for some seems valid, but the truth of the matter is we’ve all taken part in that feast in one form or another. We have utilized the hospitals and schools and recreational facilities that have come about through direct funding provided by the OLG, and we have not complained. We have stood in line and gazed long and hard at the astronomical odds of winning that $50,000,000.00 jackpot, or the $2000.00 a week for life, yet purchased the ticket, regardless. We have owned the businesses that have thrived because of the people that work in the building on Bay with the gold windows outlined in red. We’ve sat next to many who have and still work there, and know the pride and passion they have for the work they do, yet we lack the compassion for the fear they face as they try to navigate in a place most of them have never been. We take for granted the people that took it upon themselves to go to school and learn the skills needed to work in a building like that, where they have an opportunity to provide more than perhaps they ever had. We judge because we do not know, and we are jealous of those that have what we believe to be success. Success does not fall from the sky. Success to one might very well be failure to another. It is a measurement without qualification, because it means so many different things to so many people. Anytime anyone is faced with losing their ability to provide for their family, it can and will be devastating for all those that are connected. We should be proud of the people that have given consistent returns to the Province year in and year out for more than 2 decades, all while remaining transparent to the never ending criticism from a misconstrued press. An industry that has provided the entertainment that the people want and will seek regardless of who is running it. I feel more comfortable knowing the people that work for the Corporation have an interest in sustaining it while providing the best possible experience to all those who want to participate, rather than some out of country private operator who is going to be driven to maximize profit any way possible. The OLG needs a shake up, it needs to be redirected by those that understand and have a grasp on the future. It does not need to be ‘modernized’ by some old world regime who haven’t the inclination to attempt to understand what that future truly is. The power is with the people, as it should be, and whether or not they realize it in time remains to be seen.
agent_zoey 1/23/2013 6:01:51 PM ReportOrlandoFlorida is correct. Also, when will Orazetti address the issue with Modernization in reguards to the private company only needing to require the OLG employees for 1 year. After that they can dispose of them as they feel fit. They also have no oligation to stay in the Sault. What good will the OLG be when there are only VP and directors left and only 1 floor will be occupied at Foster dr. Removing and handing over the the operate and Maintain core functionality is just insane. Removing the employees from the OPS is Not going to solve the government finances as olg employees is just a drop in the bucket as far as operating cost are concerned. Orazetti needs to have OLG executives answer these questions. If he is commited to the Sault and is commited to suporting the provincial government jobs here in the sault, then he will quit with this nonsense. Moderinization is a full lies and deceptions. The press needs to dig here with Oragetti, OLG and the government. There's a big story here waiting to be un covered but for some reason everyone is having it swept under the rug.
jay 1/23/2013 6:47:12 PM ReportI dont understand how Orazetti or any politician has the balls to say they are committed to any part of the OLG jobs..in the Sault or otherwise? Not only is there no guarantee for OLG employees in the future, there is also no timeline, no way to prepare for the inevitable job losses...OLG keeps making false promises in hopes to keep its work force at full potential until the sale goes through, after that, OLG washes it hands and the employees are left to fend for themselves in a sea of uncertainty.
SooToday, you want a story, talk to the people who's lives are turned upside down and listen to all of the smokescreens and false promises that have been made to them....let the rest of the Province see how much the Liberals actually "care" about its working class citizens
OrlandoFlorida 1/23/2013 7:22:38 PM ReportMr Orazietti says his goal for the future is job creation for Northern Ontario. Why doesn't he start by preserving current jobs in the Soo. I have to ask the question, what is more important Mr Orazietti following the party line or representing the people of this riding? Based on your response today, it is clear, the party line is more important. Don't fool yourself, a privatized OLG will mean major job losses for the Soo, with less money coming into the city other business will suffer, and we know what that means - Unemployment!!!
Intwydimayla69 1/23/2013 7:48:07 PM ReportJust as Mr. Orazietti is being instructed by his superiors, so to are those that give the message to the people that work at the OLG. The message comes from the top. It comes from the individuals who really have nothing to lose as they are being compensated rather lucratively, and for the most part, given the proximity to that level of control and power, will have aligned themselves with another corporation before the dust settles. They have been hand picked to carry out the plan that the Government has laid before them. The time to ask the hard questions is now. The time to demand the truth is now. Waiting for an answer after the fact has no bearing on the outcome. Perhaps it is too late, perhaps not.
OrlandoFlorida 1/23/2013 8:09:03 PM ReportWell our MPP is not asking any questions, our mayor is not asking any questions, thank goodness for elected officials. Maybe Sootoday should start asking questions, I am sure they will not be disappointed
clane 1/23/2013 8:45:31 PM Report"Instead of subsidizing the horseracing industry the province will focus on protecting and continuing to improve health care.
The cost of the current horseracing subsidy would pay for over 27,800 hip or knee replacement surgeries or provide over 9 million hours of home care."
So my question to David O is this, how much $$$ does horseracing and the spin off jobs put into the provincial coffers? does it = the amount of the subsidy? more? less? if its even or more then its money very well spent. if its less then its money that keeps people employed which is way better then the wasted money on canceled power plants which was only to buy votes..
sinikka 1/23/2013 8:51:14 PM ReportAlthough i do not vote for the fiberals, one has to remember that presently there is a minority government in ontario. Therefore for the lottery corporation to move they need the support of other parties.Who will aide the fiberals, will it be the NDP. One cannot deny that orazietti has aided in millions and millions of dollars being poured into sault ste.marie. That's one thing that was totally absent when the NDP ruled this city. Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't with all the armchair politicians on this site.
Just Curious 1/24/2013 8:36:00 AM ReportFirst and foremost,OLG is a business and business' get bought and sold. When they do there is always fallout, always has been and always will be. Over the years I have been caught in that trap more than once and have survived,as will the employees at OLG. Not saying it will be easy but it will be done and in a few years it will be a memory. We no longer live in a world of "forever" jobs that get handed down from one generation to another and people better start getting used to it 'cause I believe it will get worse, not better. Hell, even my pension is not guaranteed.
tere 1/24/2013 9:32:11 AM ReportYes Davey Crooked is the perfect name for our MP...look at his face on the news..can't even speak any more...looks a little nervous with his lie lie lie policies... he has become a true politician that needs to be removed from office..he has created no new jobs with CBN... ppl that took those jobs lost theirs with OLG and those ppl were not replaced...who are you trying to fool..u should be ashamed of yourself and follow in McGuinty's footsteps...mr david o...go back to teaching I'm sure they'll love you there too..look at St Marys Paper...created jobs in the Sault...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
sinikka 1/24/2013 12:45:19 PM Reporttere please shake your head. You don't have to like David or his party to recognize the money that has poured into the sault during his reign. Now compare that to what the NDP brought to this town. If you are going to blame him for st. mary's paper , the only blame he can take is pouring money into a dead horse in an effort to maintain the jobs that were there. The government is definitely not responsible for its demise. Applaud what david has been able to do instead of condemning him. If you don't want to vote for he and his party in the next election please do so but don't complain just for the sake of complaining.
danno2257 1/24/2013 2:22:20 PM ReportOrazietti wasted good tax dollars on the last group of theifs that stiffed the liberals for 18 million for 2 yrs and never spent a cent of thier own,N.D.P. save the S.T MARYS PAPER in the early 90's and the people who worked there got nearly 20 years more work, when R.Stern bought the mill and N.D.P.also saved the Algoma Steel just prior too saveing us at the paper mill.
jay 1/24/2013 7:25:26 PM Reportsinikka
"the only blame he can take is pouring money into a dead horse in an effort to maintain the jobs that were there."
Why then, with Casino's that make profit would the Liberals opt to sell them off? There is alot more to the story and in time it will all come out, and most likely not for the benefit of the public!
tere 1/24/2013 10:14:00 PM ReportThank you Danno and Jay.... and Sinnika give your own head a shake pls.. and why did he sink that money into a dead horse(our taxpayer $$$)...when ASC was almost bankrupt years ago they were told the gov't didn't do bailouts hmmmmm....STRANGE......
