Look everyone. Hummers are 4 wheel drive and this didn't help slowing or stopping from hitting into a transport.
I guess not all 4 wheel drive are equal?
Sam C 1/21/2013 3:35:02 PM Report

whitefeather... no, all 4x4s will GO fast. Stopping is another matter altogether, however.
Banber 1/21/2013 3:37:10 PM Report

Dude...my 8x8 can totally kick your guy's a**

I guess I should say good thing everyone is okay. Or something like that.
bounder 1/21/2013 3:39:18 PM Report

Looks like to busy looking good instead of watching the roads.
anapeg 1/21/2013 3:48:20 PM Report

Possessing sufficient funds for the purchase of said Hummer does not guarantee sufficient knowledge of physics required for safe winter driving.
Bad Dawg 1/21/2013 4:09:27 PM Report

If it is the hummer that is always parked at Station Tower, cops should check her phone to see if there was activity on it.... has been reported for distracted driving.

And as a 4x4er, we laugh at those. A huge waste of money.
old-cat33 1/21/2013 4:14:35 PM Report

Got myself a 500 Honda that will go places that Hummer can't even imagine...LOL.
crashed13 1/21/2013 4:14:39 PM Report

Not at the calm 2nd line and Great N Road lights?

That Transport must of jumped out from nowhere.

Even it you have the righ of way sometimes you have to give in to those things.
Pipedude2155 1/21/2013 4:28:08 PM Report

I agree with Sam 4x4's have great traction on icey roads but stopping them on icey roads is another challenge
happy camper 1/21/2013 4:30:02 PM Report

What a Bummer a flat end Hummer.. HAHAHAHA
I'm In 1/21/2013 5:06:55 PM Report

Who cares your 4x4 is better than a Hummer, my 4x4, your 8x8 (what ever that is), accidents happen in winter when you don't adjust to road conditions like the police ask of you, I guess thats the way drivers learn by accidents.
Stugatzu 1/21/2013 5:58:39 PM Report

Didn't you know... it is very difficult to see a semi because it taller, wider and longer than anything else out on the road.

They also don't need more turning and braking distance either, for those very same reasons. I'll just scoot myself inside that semi's blind spot and turn right.... I see the semi also has it's right turn signal on, but.. he's left me enough space to get between him and the curb, so I will sneak that turn in-front of him... CRUNCH

My studded tires are working real nice these last couple days
Grandz 1/21/2013 8:38:19 PM Report

Look around... DO YOU SEE THE SNOW!!! We live in the north! A 4x4 vehicle is not only needed but a smart choice in vehicle decision making! Why is this person being criticized for working hard and purchasing a nice truck. No one would have commented at all if it were an average vehicle! When u get stuck in the snow don't call a 4x4 truck to pull you out!!! And to the one who commented about your 500 sportsmen (quad) I have a snowblower that can go places you haven't even thought of!
"One comment stated "4x4 truck drivers don't stop quickly" thanks CAPTAIN OBVIOUS i hope you were wearing your cape when you wrote this. Those of us who were smart enough to purchase a 4x4 truck know how to drive it correctly! So grab your helmet and crayons and find something better to do with your time then to criticize us that drive high end vehicles.
Stugatzu 1/21/2013 8:52:05 PM Report

Just because you have a 4x4, or the money to buy a "high-end" pavement queen 4x4 doesn't mean you are automatically bestowed with aggressive/defensive/evasive driving techniques.

In fact.. it is the idiotic mentality that you display... "I own a 4x4, so I can get through anything... and it makes me a better driver" that often ends up being involved in an accident, or causing one around you.

Money doesn't buy you brains... and driving something large and brutish doesn't make up for your lack of experience behind the wheel. You seriously just posted one of the most idiotic logic statements ever. Really.. with a comment like that, you need to get your head out of your arse.

Owning a ford/taurus 6-cycl, which only had all season tires, No 4x4 drive this winter on the slippery ice I came to a safe stop, then continued driving without and problems, but a 4x4 avalanche in front of me did the same but fish tailed and when they saw what a did they flipped me off.
I just laugh off.

Yes if the drive is good so is the driving.

Hey `Stugats`, well what can i say... Its all in your name. I should just leave it at that, but i get a kick out of this and i am really bored...

'My idiotic mentality that i display owning a 4x4 i can get through anything blah blah...' I never once said that and in fact the whole purpose of my post was to tell simple folk lthat 4x4 owners do not have that mentality.

Money doesnt buy you brains and driving somehing large and brutish whatever... Like seriouly your rehashing the same stuff over again.

And the whole head outta my arse thing, cmon thats just mean. like really in todays world i cant believe that name calling\bullying still exist. Poor Canada. Hopefully your not a family man cause setting these types of examples for your children is just plain old bad parenting. oh well i guess we need ppl like you to appreciate... ah i wont say it My Parents raised me better than that.

Anyways, Ciao 4 Now

P.S- just out of curiosity, how do you think you know so much about me based on a simple post. i mean thats very judgmental of you.
trout lily 1/21/2013 11:46:35 PM Report

funny everyone assumed it was the driver of the Hummer at fault, hmmmm......
Grandz 1/21/2013 11:52:48 PM Report

Well good thing no one was hurt. Luckily for the safety factor of his 4x4... Would have hated to see if the transport would have hit a smaller mid size car.

Posting, the new update information is that the transport was in the wrong, not the hummor driver.

45-year old Charles Hawdon, who was driving the transport was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for turn not in safety. There were no injuries.

GN and still GD/R.

Derek1992 1/22/2013 12:16:15 AM Report

About 30 people chirped the Hummer and how it caused this ... did any of you actually read the article? It was the transport driver who was charger for causing it.
Comprehension is a rare gift I see.

Wow, a simple article about an accident gets everyone in attack mode. Anapeg, love the comment about the cell phone not causing that much damage too funny! Johnedater given how rude and uncalled for your comment about women is, I'd be willing to bet your name should be 'Neverdater'
I don't think we can blame anyone unless we were there. Maybe the Hummer driver does use their cell phone sometimes, but no one knows if that was the case this time, or even if it was the same driver or vehicle. I'd bet there is more then one yellow Hummer in the world! (I know maybe not in the Soo, but people do travel through here)
I agree we must adjust our driving in the winter, but why are people attacking someone they don't know for a situation they don't know anything about.
Glad everyone's ok!
duncan1 1/22/2013 8:27:10 AM Report

Always so much negativity on this site and response to the stories. In the end it doesn't matter what kind of vehicle u drive … 4x4, car with winter tires or summer tires , dog sled… the main point is people is this city DO NOT adjust their driving to the conditions of the road. Plain and simple. I'm not a great driver but someways when I go out on the streets I fear for my life. It's not just people in 4x4 going fast but cars and vans too and then tailgate you thinking they can stop on a dime. It is terrifying !!! Oh and for all blaming the hummer. If it was their fault why the tractor trailer driver get the charge??
bounder 1/22/2013 8:36:48 AM Report

Their is such a thing as avoiding an accident if you STAY OFF THE CELLPHONE,both should be charged.I,m thinking of getting a trip recorder so when you drive everything in front of you is all accessible for future reference should you be involed in an accident.
moosehunter2 1/22/2013 8:56:44 AM Report

Wow!! Talk about Hummer envy LMAO!!!! MORONS!!!
luvmyGolf 1/22/2013 10:14:06 AM Report

To all you readers that commented on the 2:31pm Great Northern Road Yellow Hummer accident, so sad. Everyone gets blamed and slandered about their driving ! I and a passenger happened to be driving in front of the Yellow Hummer, when he passed my vehicle, right in front of the TSC store. He didn't signal and shot sand and snow chunks at my windshield. I even flashed my headlights to let him know that he did something unsafe!
I saw the Yellow Hummer hit the last few feet of the turning rig. The truck driver was making a safe turn. The Yellow Hummer did not have his vehicle under control.
sootodayreader 1/22/2013 10:29:35 AM Report

They cheapened the Hummer brand when they built those 5 cyclinder junk piles. You can get them used for 15-20 grand. I wouldn't pay 5k for a mini Hummer.
farmer girl 1/22/2013 10:52:16 AM Report

Not enough sanding and Snow removal, Road Conditions and excessive speed should be Factors in this , and What ever happened to having full control of your vehicle.Especially on Great Northern Road sounds like the person driving the Hummer was not paying attention to what he or she was driving.
Possibly on phone or radio or something more important on drivers mind.
For the front tire to come off like that
guaranteed the Hummer driver was not driving the proper speed for the road conditions
To automatically charge the truck driver that drives for a living and knows how to drive and knows defensive driving is wrong.Im not saying he was in the wrong or right .
I believe that the charge laid was prematurely judged
Bad Dawg 1/22/2013 11:19:20 AM Report

I hear ya bounder seen it myself and almost got run over

I drive 4x4s, and not because it makes me a better driver! The truck is great for traction but still keep a safe distance for braking on ice and the Jeep is way worse.....ICE IS SLIPPERY (no matter what you drive)! Most guys that have lifted toys know this and the last thing they want to do is smash it. But there are the idiots that do not care, just like any other driver of any other kind of vehicle. That is just natural selction, be patient. They will sort themselves.
MrBusDriver 1/22/2013 11:22:21 AM Report

People buy a 4x4 and think it makes them invincible but really, 4-Wheel drive helps you go, it does NOT help you slow down or stop. The only thing that will help you is driving defensively, and driving according to the conditions.
flyfisher1 1/22/2013 11:56:33 AM Report

sh*t happens
Metree 1/22/2013 1:37:16 PM Report

First off
Grandz "Those of us who were smart enough to purchase a 4x4 truck know how to drive it correctly! So grab your helmet and crayons and find something better to do with your time then to criticize us that drive high end vehicles." re-read your post and see why your getting flamed.

Second, just because you say 4x4 is great for going and not stopping, that's not the case. I have a 4x4 and it stops a hell alot easier in 4 wheel than 2... reason being in 2wd the front wheel which have 70+% of the braking power lockup easy on snow or ice(obviously). put it in 4wd and the traction of all 4 tires combined and the fact that they are all linked together actually helps(not prevents) from locking the wheels up. Knowing how to drive makes up the rest.

Third, bring on the inevitable flame war.
EAS 1/22/2013 2:56:46 PM Report

Just reading the news on Sootoday, when I came upon this article and decided to quickly browse the comments. I can't believe the people in this city ranting and raving about how having money to buy a Hummer doesn't make you smart, how the driver might have been on the phone, and on and on. From what I understood by reading the article is that the TRANSPORT DRIVER was charged, not the other driver. However, I must say that people in this city can't handle it when others may or may not have something they can't have. I couldn't believe all the negative rude comments about a situation when they don't know all the facts. The article was about an accident, not about 4X4's, 8X8's or about a Honda going where another more expensive vehicle may go. Ignorant people in this city I must say!! Can't handle it if anyone gets ahead in life, and they love it when others are down. Get a life!!
bejewel 1/22/2013 3:21:23 PM Report

luvmygolf should let the trucking company know what was witnessed, in order to save the driver & the company unnecessary penalties
sootodayreader 1/22/2013 5:55:12 PM Report

The Hummer in the picture is not full size and costs no more than other SUV's. Looks to be a 2009 or older. Not worth more than 15-20 tops in good shape. Now if it was the 80,000 Hummer I could see people being jealous and not being objective.
To turn that corner with a transport the driver must swing wide or risk going over the curb. Good defensive drivers know this and stay back. This driver didn't.
nanci 1/22/2013 5:57:12 PM Report

Real Hummers have full 4 wheel independant suspention and 2:1 ratio hubs those arent really Hummers. So dont put down a Hummer unless you know what a Hummer is. Just sayin!
mollyanne 1/22/2013 7:40:07 PM Report

I was at the scene of the accident and saw the Hummer's driver, who had a stethoscope around his neck, leave his vehicle and walk to the transport. I heard one of the other drivers ask the Hummer driver if he was in a hurry and he replied he was doing the speed limit. However, just before the accident he had passed 2 vehicles by using the right hand lane. By this time he had no chance to slow down or stop. It was lucky that no other vehicles were involved since they were safely stopped. As for the cell phone, the Hummer's windows were so deeply tinted that no one will ever know.

Also it is a mystery why only one of drivers was named in the police report.
TheBeerman 1/24/2013 8:33:15 AM Report

luvmygolf: I'd say to talk to city police, but I'm sure their investigation is closed... They never let the truth get in the way of their story.
