CITY POLICE

NEWS RELEASE

**************************
In addition to a number of collisions reported to the Collision Reporting Centre, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has responded to a number of motor vehicle collisions today.

In several of the cases, the drivers are failing to adjust their driving to the inclement weather and road conditions.

Two vehicles were towed from a collision at Boundary Rd. and Trunk Rd. after a collision was reported at 9:47 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

At 10:33 hours, officers attended a collision on 1 Maxanne Place, Unit #7 where a vehicle was driven into a residence.

The elderly driver was moving her vehicle for snowplowing and somehow accelerated across the parking lot, through a fence, across a yard, through the patio doors of a residence and came to rest completely inside the residence.

No injuries were reported, no one was home at the time, and no charges are being laid against the driver.

The residence sustained heavy damage.

The cause of the acceleration has not been determined at this time.

Two vehicles were towed from a collision at Albert St. E. and Tancred Street after a collision was reported at 11:16 a.m.

Minor injuries were reported that did not require immediate medical treatment.

At 11:19 a.m. it was reported that a city bus struck a vehicle at Goulais Avenue and Douglas St.

No injuries were reported.

At 2:50 p.m. officers responded to a collision at McNabb St. and Great Northern Road.

Two vehicles were towed from the scene and an occupant from one of the vehicles was transported to the hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic Services is continuing with that investigation.

Bravo Sault Ste. Marie, you can't drive worth a damn. Of course, I think everyone already knew this fact.

OICU812 1/18/2013 6:48:45 PM Report

People in Sault Ste Marie can not drive in the best of weather. What did you expect today? Get winter tires folks, CITY clean & sand your damn streets its an Ice Rink out there.

F150Guy 1/18/2013 6:49:35 PM Report

Its ridiculous, I took the longest way home possible so I could make it safely in one piece. You can tell who doesn't have their winter tires on, I had to turn around in a driveway cause of someone getting stuck going up Third line hill.
KDawg 1/18/2013 7:28:11 PM Report

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has a Colllision Reporting Centre?

Is it located in the same building as the Special Investigations Unit?
hrh 1/18/2013 7:43:57 PM Report

My near-miss at 8:25 this morning involved a city grader pulling out of Hudson Street, onto Cathcart, directly into my path. I thank God for my horn, brakes, and a clear on-coming lane. Then, within 60 feet or so, he just stopped and reversed. WTF ?
Snowdon 1/18/2013 7:47:40 PM Report

Everyone in every city thinks the people in their city can't drive. Every city has accidents.

Sootoday over-reacting once again at its finest.

@snowdon:
"In several of the cases, the drivers are failing to adjust their driving to the inclement weather and road conditions."

This is not a case where "everybody thinks they have bad drivers in their city." We have bad drivers! We are having a lot of accidents today because people won't/can't adjust to the conditions.

MOTORIN!

I was out driving this evening, I saw one person go through a snowbank on Trunk Rd. and a person who got stuck half way up Lake Street hill and couldn't go forward, with traffic piled up behind them....

apparently this is the first year sault ste marie has gotten snow *rolls eyes*
mudrunner 1/18/2013 10:23:01 PM Report

Snow tires have nothing to do with the factor, I have 4 all new cooper snow tires on my car an was still sliding at stops.
iamtc 1/18/2013 10:25:41 PM Report

would it be nice do drive snowmachines all over city.

Sault Ste Marie, the only town where turn signals are optional equipment on every car/truck/van sold
vic-star 1/18/2013 10:58:33 PM Report

mudrunner, you probably need to adjust your driving then, i have 4 bald summer tires on my truck, and with slowing down a little sooner, and not stomping on the gas to go, i havent had slid through an intersection all winter. People in the Sault really need to learn to drive in the winter, every time it snows, its like its the first time they have ever driven in it, snow on the roads shouldnt be as big a surprise as it seems to be
tommy_boi07 1/18/2013 11:25:05 PM Report

While there is a serious problem with people not adjusting to the conditions, the biggest factor is the lack of effort from the city in clearing the snow. In three days I've seen only 3 graders on the road. Not really sure what we pay taxes for if they're not going to keep the roads in a safe condition.
MrJWall 1/19/2013 12:40:08 AM Report

It was pretty slick under that snow on the roads in some places today for sure! Why not say something like--"that's unfortunate or ya feel bad" or something instead of putting people down out there? Really? Only takes a second to get an accident in the best conditions.
Zarm27 1/19/2013 1:10:27 AM Report

Accidents are where no one is at fault, snow conditions imo are not a reason to find a fault. Adjust, plain and simple, if you're using summer tires since you're cheaper than a ***, then move to the southern states. Any real driver compensates, be it their tires or the weather. People raging about bad drivers, seriously there are bad drivers all year round.
Pakadeva 1/19/2013 3:23:09 AM Report

I have 4 new snow tires, I use second gear when slippery, but, it's still very difficult climbing all the hills in my SUV when they are totally not cleared of any snow...then to top it off, people DART in front of you, or cut into lanes without slowing down, on slippery roads. That's what causes accidents...not taking precautions & I agree with whomever said...weather shouldn't factor in a no blame unless it's a sheet of ice. Slow down!
Pot8oHead 1/19/2013 4:12:39 AM Report

Winter tires won't cure the fact that as soon as the snow starts flying, people in this city forget how to drive.

Twice yesterday I had some jackass cut me off for no good reason; the first one happened on Oryme, when some elderly idiot pulled out of the parking lot of the apartment building across from St. Pius X while I was coming around the bend heading west. It's not like there was a long line of traffic behind me or anything; this idiot was just impatient. Impatient to do what? I'm not really sure, but not only did it involve cutting me off, but then they decided the best course of action was to drive 20km/hr.

The next was on Conmee Ave. Some idiot decided to pull out off of Northland Road, cutting me off. And for what? To be the 4th person in line at the stop sign at the corner of Conmee and Carmen's Way. Smart move, jackass!

The second moron above was also one of those idiots who just can't be bothered to clean their vehicles off before heading out onto the road. The rear window was almost completely covered in snow and she hadn't even bothered to clean the snow off of her side mirrors.

At least she had good traction
mudrunner 1/19/2013 9:36:16 AM Report

Trust me if I slowed down anymore then what I was driven I would be stopped.
Its called glare ice with no sand.

Did this grader have a sign on the back saying
"KEEP BACK 100FT" by any chance?
He was removing snow, didn't you notice?
Stugatzu 1/19/2013 11:46:31 AM Report

City/Municipal snow removal crews have the right-of-way over cars/trucks... if they have their blue beacon light on... you "four-wheelers" need to stop. Asking a 20-ton machine that is moving 3-4 tons of snow to stop is assinine.

The Sault definitely has some of the worst drivers in all of the province. If you don't think so... climb into the cab of a semi or dump truck and see for yourself how bad Sault motorist are.
pat on a bike 1/19/2013 12:59:18 PM Report

Any chance it was a stuck gas pedal issue...remeber they recalled a load of Toyota's?

Thats a pretty far distance no? Did she not think to try to hit her brake? She would not of slid that far.. Elderly people should be tested ( for driving ) every year IMO

The Sault's got the worst this...the Sault's got the worst that...WHAAAH WHAAAH WHAAH!!!!
The Sault's got the worst POSTERS!!!
Now please just move away and the Sault will be the best again!!! LMFAO

Well thera...you sound like a very nice lady...maybe you'll move with me!!! ;)
Stugatzu 1/19/2013 7:10:55 PM Report

Toyota recall being a factor or not -- that old lady is at fault. She didn't have care or control of her vehicle while she was operating it. Look at the description of the accident.. across a parking lot, through a fence, through patio doors and parked completely inside a home.

Its an "accident" that could have been avoidable by an experienced and alert driver. To crash through a fence and a home.. there was some significant speed involved to accomplish such damage.

I'll say it again.. poor/sloppy/unaware drivers in Sault Ste. Marie.

Also home of one of Canada's Worst Driver's contenstants.. and a publicly admitted drunk driver... lets pour a drink and then we'll hit the road. Yay!
