A $75,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant was announced today for the Passport to Unity Multicultural Festival (file photo from 2012 event shown).

Established in 2006, the festival has grown annually and now attracts over 4,000 people, many from outside the city.

The Sault Community Career Centre organizes the event and is using the money to support further growth.

“This Trillium grant will help to support making the vision of Passport To Unity, the Sault’s largest multicultural festival, become a self-sustaining week-long festival welcoming people from all over Northern Ontario and beyond,” said Karol Rains, executive director of the Sault Community Career Centre. "I am excited to expand this international festival and am grateful that the Ontario Trillium Foundation sees it as a valuable and worthwhile initiative.”

Added Sault MPP David Orazietti in a news release: “The province is providing support for the Passport to Unity Multicultural Event because it provides an opportunity for local residents to learn about and celebrate cultural diversity. The multicultural festival is becoming a premier tourism destination in the region, which continues to attract thousands of people to our community and is a welcome boost to the economy.”

An agency of the provincial government, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the voluntary sector through investments in community-based initiatives.
