Temporary layoffs affect local Tenaris employees

Wednesday, January 09, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

Chris Belsito, communications spokesperson with Tenaris Algoma Tubes, confirmed today the "temporary reduction of 83 employees" effective January 14, 2013.

The company is adjusting the shifts to align with production, he told SooToday.com, and the layoffs are due to reduced market activity.

"The market is cyclical and production is determined by product demand," he told us, adding that the company has not lost any customers.

These staff reductions were implemented in accordance with the union's collective agreement, and all affected employees will retain their job recall rights, Belsito said.

I never seen a place lay off and hire all the time like Tenaris does.

Shouldn't this read "affect" and not "effect"?
Spyyder 1/9/2013 5:54:15 PM Report

I guess they can ride the welfare wagon for a while as they arent allowed to apply for ei. What a wonderful city we live in, our main industries hire and layoff as often as a man changes his underwear. If not in industry where do people work in this city, fast food and call centres, that's about it. Then again welfare pays more than fast food
murcor 1/9/2013 5:56:04 PM Report

The article does say affected as it should.
I'm In 1/9/2013 6:20:35 PM Report

Spyyder: if the laid off workers have the hours they can apply for EI no welfare, and since you know it all start a business, hire people and pay what Tenaris pays, this company has done a lot of good for SSM. A company can't employee people if they have no orders.

I just feel sorry for anyone that may have recently been hired and bought a new truck or other big expenditure based on plans revolving around a life of working at the tube mill.
Working Man 1/9/2013 7:25:17 PM Report

Hire some qualified people for once! Forget about your family. Focus on what's right for the company. I see so many losers get hired there it's not even funny. The intelligent people have to move out of this piece of crap otherwise known as a city....
BigDaddy 1/9/2013 7:35:33 PM Report

I hear you Zarm27 and let's add to this all the decent government jobs being lost as well, don't forget the cut to teachers as well. Hate spewers I'm sure are just loving this. Won't the Sault be a great place when no one makes a decent salary.

Personally, I truly feel for those affected. But I guess that makes me a leftie right?
fatafr 1/9/2013 7:37:10 PM Report

I was watching Sun News today and I see chief " give me some more soup" spence walking around her teepee with her entourage. Talking about work, I wonder if these natives hanging around with her have a real job to go to. They don't seem to be visiting spence while on their lunch hour. It's sad how the people in the real world have to worry about their jobs, layoffs, feeding their families and whether they qualify for EI.
BigDaddy 1/9/2013 7:44:45 PM Report

I'm In...I think your missing the point...Welfare as in CORPORATE welfare. Companies are able to use the EI system like a personal bank account (***NOTE: Yes, companies pay into the system but just a fraction of what they get out. Example, the maximum an employee pays is now something like $800 A YEAR, the employer kicks in another $1120 for about $2000 TOTAL) AND THIS IS ALL TAX deductible. The employee, with enough hours (6mths of work) will pull out AT LEAST $420 PER WEEK for up to 45 weeks (about $19,000) 8 TIMES what they put in. See why this system isn't sustainable?

They can most likely retain the staff during slow times but hey, why use their own when they can use yours right? Companies should not be able to tap into the EI system this much.

And Corporate tax cuts create jobs...right.
Zarm27 1/9/2013 7:49:33 PM Report

To add into BigDaddy's last comment, one thing I've heard from a couple friends is in regards to the EI it's easily taken advantage of. An example would be a roofer, seasonal occupation, during off season is able to attain EI.
Jimssm 1/9/2013 9:02:08 PM Report

Fatafr...

Stop worrying about Spence and 'the natives' and start helping out the people in your own city.

How about a visit to Tenaris ?

How about a few less tax breaks for Tenaris ?

How about getting rid of the PUC's planned 10% /year water increase ripoff ?

How about City Council getting off their collective butts and get the city some jobs that aren't call centres ?

With all the foreign people coming here to start their life and slowly take over- Canada will become a 2nd minority- hard for me to comprehend all these changes with everyone and everything.
This city in the past 3 years has really went down hill. Things need to change. absolutly no reason for the tax hikes AT ALL.
Good honest hard working low income families are really being put to the test with the Government turning their back the other way. Its all about money and politics now. Where did the we all go? what direction will we be headed in 10 years when property tax has driven the average income home owners to sell or foreclose their home. Cottage country will be running out of room i think. People will rather build in the country and it will become a trend-

Greed has really got its greedy slimy hands wrapped quite tightly around many!
Wisenheimer 1/9/2013 10:31:19 PM Report

Worked at the Tube Mill for 25 years. Layoffs are part of a cyclical business. The warm winters do nothing for the nat. gas price but the oil patch is optimistic for 2013. The workers will be called back ... Just pray the NDP under Mulcair don't get near power. They believe our oil patch is evil and killing industry in S. Ontario and to hell with Tenaris and Essar. Their buddies down South have similar feelings towards the Keystone XL pipeline.

what a great job the Sault did to sell to them
they will hire peoples from their Country and all of us will be left with no job

Lavendalilly....

"With all the foreign people coming here to start their life and slowly take over- "

Your ancestors probably fit that description.

...and the alternative to 'those foreign people' owning Essar and Tenaris is to have them both shut down. We tried the Canadian owned thing, and even the union-owned thing but they didn't work.

I agree with the rest of your post, though.

You people don't really have a damn clue how a business runs! You think the company "owes it to you" to keep you working during a slow time. Are you crazy, misinformed or just sstupid? The company owes you NOTHING. They gave you a high paying job to make them a product. If they have no orders coming in, what are they supposed to do keep you there sitting on your ass?!?!? That's how companies go out of business.

As for the new hiree's, someone said they feel bad for them if they went out and bought a house or a new truck....feel bad??? If you're a new hiree and you do that you're an absolute IDIOT and deserve what you get.

Holy man....you people have such a sense of entitlement its sickening. You people will be the reason companies like essar and tenaris leave Canada. Then you'll be there on the news crying about how you can't find a job....pathetic....
sitka_archie 1/10/2013 9:33:06 AM Report

Further more I wish our government, whether federal, provincial and/or municipal would cut industrial taxes and red tape down to actually entice Industrial Corporations to build and produce here.

MORE TAX BREAKS, LESS RED TAPE means more jobs you fools.Raise corporate taxes?!?!?!?? Why so they can shut the mills down here and move them elsewhere???? Idiots....

I cant wait till Essar and the tube mill just close and all these people will be out of work with no experience to do anything, LMAO. CANT WAIT. And to you idiots that are going to respond with " This city will not survive without essar and the tube mill". the city will survive, dont worry, maybe these house prices will go down :) . Also property taxes will go down :) .
WIN WIN for this city. And the only reason these places will close is because of the greedy Steelworkers union!!

BigDaddy hit the corporate welfare nail right on the head.. targeted wage subsidies are used to pay companies like Walmart to hire people for 19 weeks.

Catering to the illusion of job creation knowing full well that corporations such as Canadian Tire, Zellers or even The Dollar Store have no intentions of hiring these people full time.

Our elected officials bend over backwards delivering more 'goodnews' stories of job creation and economic growth. Plastering their pictures across the media, funneling billions of dollars of "Infrastructure" money into multinational corporations like Brookfield.

Other companies like call-centers exploit a desperate welfare workforce leaving very little of the money earned in our economy & once the subsidies run out.. They ship the entire operation over seas as an 'incubation project' & or ask these same smiling representatives to help them facilitate the bankruptcy proceedings.

It makes no sense & seems fiscally schizophrenic to provincially lower tariffs on imports and raise federal taxes on exported materials.. while locally chanting the economic healing potentials of a deep-sea port.

Foreign companies are laughingly 'aware' that manufacturing is almost totally subsidized by provincial, federal & international loopholes.

Canada seems to have developed a form of corporate autism that only a politician could love.

We need to hold our policy makers accountable for the illusions they've created.. they need to be reminded that Queens park, Parliament Hill & even City Hall belong to us & at any given moment we have the right to put padlocks on those doors.

Workingman. Have you always been qualified to do all the jobs you have been hired for in your life? I'm sure at some point you needed to be trained to do a job! Just like the new employee at the tube mill. You should be a little more open minded and then you would realize the only way to be qualified to do certain jobs in the tube mill is by training on the job! Not in college or university! Sounds like you think your more qualified then some that have been hired over yourself! Maybe you should check your ego at the door and you may have a chance to be an appreciative and productive employee like the people you say are unqualified!

Do half of the posters on here work at TENARIS? Good chance you don't cause if you did you wouldn't be posting such outrageous comments that they're laying local people off to get "their" people in, the extreme majority of that mill is made up of local people and has been for years, had TENARIS not bought the tube mill the doors would still be welded shut. Its sickening and embarrassing to read such trash.
