Public elementary teachers to stage one-day protest this Friday

NEWS RELEASE

ELEMENTARY TEACHERS'
FEDERATION OF ONTARIO

***************************
Public elementary teachers to stage one-day protest this Friday

Political protest against Bill 115 supported overwhelmingly by majority of ETFO members

Based on a solid majority vote taken in December, ETFO teachers, designated early childhood educators (DECEs), professional support personnel (PSP), and education support personnel (ESP) across Ontario will stage a one-day political protest this Friday aimed at the government and education minister for invoking Bill 115.

"The minister made a deliberate and provocative choice to wipe out the democratic rights of tens of thousands of educators rather than work towards a respectful solution,” said Sam Hammond, president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO). "She could have taken our olive branch and waited for a new leader to try and find solutions, but she chose not to."

"Our members are standing up to say that democratic values must trump party politics in this province. What happened to educators must not happen to any other Ontarian. The stain of Bill 115, enacted four months ago this Friday, serves as a permanent reminder of that."

Ninety-two percent (92 percent) of over 46,000 members who cast a ballot in December voted in favour of a one-day political protest should the minister impose contracts using Bill 115.

She did so on January 3.

"This protest is aimed squarely at the government and education minister, not those school boards who pursued legal collective bargaining with our locals. It is shameful that the minister tied their hands with the limiting parameters of Bill 115. The government can prorogue the legislature but it can’t prorogue democracy."

"It is disingenuous for Minister Broten to say that the government has not been able to communicate with the rank and file members of our Federation," added Hammond. "Our members have heard her, and have responded - not just with the one-day protest vote. They spoke with huge majorities in two other votes to protest Bill 115 when it was enacted last fall."

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario represents 76,000 elementary public school teachers and education professionals across the province and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.

Here we go again...looks like this is going to become a regular occurrence this year.
hockeyman18 1/9/2013 3:59:40 PM Report

and here come the complaints...

Big deal it is one day and if teachers are overpaid and don't do their jobs well you shouldn't want to send your kids there.

These teachers have to find baby sitters for their own children.
teancrumpets 1/9/2013 4:04:37 PM Report

I hope ALL educators continue to fight for what fair & deserving , most importantly their right to negotiate.
Job Developer 1/9/2013 4:12:14 PM Report

The teachers can stage a protest all they want as that is their right however it is not their right to keep our kids out of school as a hostage to meet their needs. If you truly want to negotiate do just that. If you want to walk out in protest that could and should be grounds for dismissal.
RobMel 1/9/2013 4:13:19 PM Report

I myself will be sending them an invoice for either lost wages due to having to call in sick Friday or the daycare bill if I am lucky enough to find a place that isn't already full! I urge other families to do that same. Maybe this will help usher things ahead.
66cherokee 1/9/2013 4:17:03 PM Report

These teachers are not going to get sitters for their own kids. They will either have them with them at the strike or the teachers will take turns picketing.

I hope that they are fined big time. The students are in the middle of this fiasco. If the teachers start saying that it's for the kids, they are now the biggest hypocrites, but will be even more so.
There are a lot of people out there who would give their eyeteeth to have a job like theirs. So teachers, suck it up.
nobodycares 1/9/2013 4:22:23 PM Report

Just wondering.
Do the teachers lose a days pay or are they on salary. If they take one of their sick days, can they also be in a protest march
candio21 1/9/2013 4:26:51 PM Report

This is crazy... strike or don't stike just stop giving me 2 days notice to find care for my child. What the government is doing is not fair. They should not be able to take away a groups right to be able to have leverage in negotiations. I believe the teachers are spoiled in their wage, hrs, vacation time and everything else. But we live in Canada so I know I have no say in public worked jobs so I suck it up just like they should.
madmaymax 1/9/2013 4:27:36 PM Report

EVERYONE OUT THERE ASK YOURSELF THIS ONE QUESTION?, WHERE WOULD WE ALL BE WITHOUT WONDEFUL TEACHERS?????EDUCATION AND TEACHERS ARE MORE IMPORTANT TO SOCIETY THAN OUR GOVERNMENT WHO JUST KEEP TAKING THE MONEY OFF THE CANADIAN PEOPLE AND THEY DON'T GIVE IT BACK OR THEY JUST GIVE IT AWAY!!! SO I SAY GO TEACHERS GO AND IF YOU NEED MONEY TO PAY FOR A SITTER FOR YOUR KIDS FOR A STRIKE DAY THE TEACHERS TAKE TO GET THIER POINT ACROSS ASK OUR WONDERFUL GOVERNMENT!!!
Ricatoni 1/9/2013 4:30:29 PM Report

I support the teachers and every one else in this province who are being dictated to by goverment thugs....
Screw you politicians!!!!!!! I hope all workers continue this until the liberals are gone..
If you dont like it to bad then home school your kids and while your at it teach them extra curricular activities as well...........
Time for all you whinning parents to step up and do what it is you think teachers should do for free......LMAO!!!!! its only going to get worse folks this is just the beginning of the end of the liberals
Lynds 1/9/2013 4:31:26 PM Report

I mean, the government already repealed Bill 115. There are lots of other jobs that never go on strike or protest like this (i.e. nurses and firefighters).

There are tons of newly graduated teachers who aren't able to teach that would love to be in those jobs.

The constant comment around this site is that people should go back to school to get better jobs if they don't like their hours. Umm. As I've said before, people with masters or doctorate degrees work very long hours because they have a high-level job. They don't have the luxury of striking all the time.
070304 1/9/2013 4:31:59 PM Report

I am sick and tired of hearing the complaints about teachers. At least they have the backbone to stand up for OUR democratic rights. It is truly unfair that the government would enact a Bill just so that they could DICTATE what they wanted upon the teachers of our province. These teachers and their support staff work very hard, and very long hours to provide an education for your and my children. Anyone who believes that teachers are overpaid, and only work like 4 hours a day, is either grossly misinformed or ignorant. Teachers are paid WELL for what they do, I don't take that away, however, they are under respected and in a lot of cases are very unappreciated. It takes a lot of prep work in order to have a classroom and all the resources prepared, lessons planned, etc. Not to mention PERSONAL INVESTMENT that teachers make to provide an education for the children. As far as a one day protest being a pain in the backside, and a cost to parents. GOOD! The protest is starting to work. If it is such a pain and expense, don't whine about it being the teachers, whine to your member of parliament. It is time to stop complaining about the teachers and start complaining about the real source of the problem.
hockeyman18 1/9/2013 4:36:57 PM Report

Send an invoice for lost wages? Wow. Now I have heard it all. Obviously they lose a days pay. And what is the big deal of having your kids home an extra day. I know I won't mind taking the day off for my children. If teachers are overpaid, under worked, you surely won't mind teaching them yourselves for the day. Again, how would you like it if a third party went to your boss and said this is your contract, take it or leave it.
Lynds 1/9/2013 4:38:53 PM Report

"Again, how would you like it if a third party went to your boss and said this is your contract, take it or leave it."
They do. Anyone who is a non-union employee in the public sector has this happen.
Zarm27 1/9/2013 4:40:36 PM Report

Shang Tsu just yelled "It has begun".

I actually think it's a good thing now, mainly since the year of 2013 is going to be so horrible on everyone. We'll likely see an uprising by all members of Canada due to rate hikes, a dissolution of our Government, a fall in the economy, and then possibly a mad max situation. Stock up on essentials and have a few laughs at how society will crumble and be pitted against each other.
hockeyman18 1/9/2013 4:42:21 PM Report

I, also, did not see many parents volunteer time to carry out extra curriculars. The coaches (teachers) I know went out of their way to find a volunteer to take over so the students didn't have to stop.... but they don't care about the kids, right?

I believe Teachers are paid Salary that's how they get pay cheques during summer.
KMF61MCF 1/9/2013 4:58:06 PM Report

Non Union work places do say this is your job description, your wage , no sick days, no benefits Take it or leave it!!!! And this includes some trade positions and so many other non union jobs like it or lump it. The same the Government is doing right now to Union Jobs.
070304 1/9/2013 5:01:37 PM Report

Teachers are paid a Salary and depending on the Board they work for, they can choose to get paid over 12 months or 10.
moem 1/9/2013 5:06:08 PM Report

The teachers will lose a days pay, and will likely be fined (unless the board and govt cave... They probably will) as it is not " their right" to protest it is an illegal strike. And hockeyman not everyone can afford to take the day off for their children, some people don't even have days they can take, sick days are for sick not to watch your children when they should be in school. When Toronto transit held their illegal strike people who couldn't get to work lost their jobs, hard working minimum wage workers suffered. And before people start talking about union protection and better wages, remember many retail outlets pay minimum wage and are unionized, so those workers make the bare minimum and pay union dues, and don't have benefits like sick days etc!!! So when they must miss a days work they jeopardize their jobs and their money to live

070304 1/9/2013 5:12:01 PM Report

Hard working minimum wage workers do suffer when this happens, but the point is people need to complain about the proper entity. They should not be complaining about the teachers, they should be complaining about the government and their decisions and actions.
jojoe71 1/9/2013 5:37:44 PM Report

Is it really true that some teachers retire then come back and double dip? Is that why younger teachers have a hard time getting started? If this is so they have a strange union.... Just asking.
KMF61MCF 1/9/2013 6:04:00 PM Report

jojoe71 Yes it is very true many Teachers Retire with their Pension and return as a supply Teacher. And given the short and long term placements. And Yes this is a very big stumbling block for "new" Teachers looking for a Job.

Hi Again:)Is there not a protest on Friday> Idle NO More???All of Ontario, even ALL of CANADA should take that day and protest on the streets, close this country of ours down for the government to see they need the people of Canada and our money that we give them to do with what they see fit. I did not mean to shout before, but after watching the news tonight I am erked at the way the they threaten to charge the teachers up to $2000 fine for striking???Wonder where those fines would go??? Maybe towards another 30% raise for them!!!Remember what Hitler did?? The people of Austria voted him in 98% and looked what happened, it could happen again???? History always seems to repeat it self??? Look at what is happening in the schools now, look what they are doing to the people on social assistance etc, they(the government) creep up very slowly and then its over, to late for anyone to do anything once they pass a bill, law etc.Again this is how I feel, have a great night one and all:):):)
shju 1/9/2013 7:50:21 PM Report

Everyone is replaceable. Fire them all and hire new ones. I'm sure all the new graduates are wanting jobs and will take a wage freeze for only 2 years. The teachers should be happy they are still working and getting their 90k a year.
hockeyman18 1/9/2013 8:42:45 PM Report

it is not about MONEY! It is about our human rights. The ones the government are taking away. They all agreed for a 2 year wage freeze which would be a life time freeze as in the casino here (6 years now?). IT IS NOT ABOUT MONEY!If it is, why strike and lose money if that is all it is about.
W. Yote 1/9/2013 9:10:40 PM Report

Hockeyman your so full of it. It is about the money and has been from the beginning. When the government introduced bill 115 to make teachers essential services the union jumped on it as a way to guise their true motives.

Teachers agreed to a 2 year wage freeze only if they were guaranteed raises in years 3 and 4.

Fine them and put a letter on their records so if they do it again they can be suspended without pay, if they do it again dismiss them and make room for the THOUSANDS of out of work supply teachers.
shju 1/9/2013 9:17:42 PM Report

It's always about the money, and if anyone says differently than their full of S**t.
hockeyman18 1/9/2013 10:49:07 PM Report

I am one of those teachers who can't even apply to be on the substitute teaching list. I still support these teachers even though I will never get a job in this city, or even province. There are no jobs out there, which leads to our youth leaving overseas, up north, west, or east. For those saying fire them and hire new ones, the substitute teachers are still basically unionized so they would be forced in the contract as well. Most teachers are not at the full pay scale and they agreed to the pay freeze because they make decent money anyways. It is such a damn shame people think it is about the money. I hope this happens to all unions in Ontario and everyone loses their pension, benefits, and good wages and pay everyone minimum wage. This province is a joke with all this stuff with the government, PUC raising prices and everything else. I cannot wait to get out of this province. Most people I know left Ontario and would never come back.
lavendalilly 1/10/2013 1:09:02 AM Report

I don't get it. I really do not get it. The last strike they had over on Grea Noerthern road, while I was at the stop light, I wached a few of these teachers walk out of tim hortons with their coffee in hand and a great big grin and some were laughing- it looked like they were having a fun time- then again as I drove past to head north, the sheer look of laughter, smiles, groups of them hanging out, not marching or holding their "protest signs". Its a bunch of crap- and they know it. It makes me sick. And I agree- why do we only get a few days notice about this crap? It is unfair. No reason for it at all. I do not care- actually I can care less about the people that are kissing these teachers' asses and supporting them- NOBODY is supporting us when it comes to us having to forfeit a days' wage to do what these "teachers" have dedicated their career to be one- they are the ones who made he decision to be edicators, and now they whine about it??? With them or against them- either way its still a heap load of crap.
I for one am sick and tired of hearing about how these teachers can make the assumption that kids need pills and medicine to make them tollerable, or money every single week to take them out on rediculous fieldtrips to movies and bowling- its rediculous. Our tax dollars pay for these teachers- why in the hell do we need to pay for trips, movie theaters, bowling, going to Chesira's for lunch, AND then find the cash to pay for daycares or sitters so we can keep our own jobs? Its a load of crap. Like it or don't like it- I can care less- I do not support this at all. I never will.
hockeyman18 1/10/2013 7:52:40 AM Report

lavendalilly

Those field trips were $5 at most and your child was probably happy as they could be. What I don't get is why you send your child to school. If the teachers are so terrible why would you trust them with your children! I wouldn't hire a babysitter if they were terrible at their job. Why don't you send them to the catholic schools or move schools, maybe even home school him. Or do you just need a free place to send them for the day and that is all you care about.
hockeyman18 1/10/2013 8:00:04 AM Report

This city is a mess because of the government and people are blind. Wrongful death of a young man (everyone knows who I am talking) and the guy gets off and the officers on duty. PUC raising prices for the next ten years. Government going after unions. Continual lack of jobs for young people out of college. S.S.M is going to be a ghost town or home to the people who can work in the plant. The rest is minimum wage jobs.

The teachers have fought for everything they have decades ago, what gives the government the right to strip that away. Why should the government be able to go above the union and say "here is your contract, that is it, that is all." If people here read Bill 115 you would see that the so called "putting students first act" mentions the word student twice, once in the title and once in the introduction; the rest is about what TEACHERS are losing in terms of their rights" The UNIONS are one telling the teachers to strike, the teachers simply do not have a choice, or they do not have a job. Obviously the ones who are complaining aren't unionized because they have no idea how it works.

hockeyman18- I have changed schools for my kids. They have already been enrolled...
And as for your comment for my kids to be sent to school so I can have a free day- insane assumption pal- I have one child at home full time and only goes to school when she feels well enough as she has leukemia- another child that is 1 years old and two kids- a boy and a girl (7 & 9) that are constantly bullied at the elementry school- and they will do nothing about it. I have every right to be down right disgusted with these teachers- Thats my opinion- like it or not I do not CARE!
