I don't know if it was a good or bad idea to put a Walmart downtown. They don't have an entrance from the Mall so thanks to you punks, I have to go outside and walk around.

I suggest armed guards at the doors checking the sketchy people as they walk out - show your receipt.

I don't care if it's profiling. It's the way the world is now and there are so many scammers and thiefs out there; so, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about. I don't mind showing my receipt leaving, so why should anyone else, unless they are hiding something?

Beej 1/9/2013 9:35:55 AM Report

If you're not able to walk around it's time for a mobility scooter.
Profiling? NOT!!
OMGWTF 1/9/2013 9:40:45 AM Report

Been there lately? I went into it via the mall entrance.

just another shit rat that is going to do nothing to contribute to society over his lifetime,
Sam C 1/9/2013 10:19:10 AM Report

Stevie-E... it must be awful for you living in fear all the time. "Armed guards" and "sketchy" individuals?

First, there IS an entrance from the mall, which -- as I read the story -- the suspect used to exit to the "Station Mall area," where the UNARMED security guards caught him.

Secondly, he "was observed by Walmart security" slipping the item up his sleeve. They must then ALLOW him to leave the store before arresting him. Until he leaves the premises, it is not legally considered theft.
Sam C 1/9/2013 10:22:09 AM Report

(Sorry, hit 'Post' too soon.)

...the UNARMED security did their job admirably. They observed his actions and followed him out of the store and apprehended him.

I'm not sure what more "armed guards" would have done.

What about people who, like me, go in and have a look around but decide not to buy anything. When I leave and am confronted by the "armed guard" demanding to see my receipt, and I have none, would I be arrested? Or shot?
Stevie-E 1/9/2013 10:25:24 AM Report

Beej,

You're a brilliant mind that deserves an award.

Listen, I am quite capable of walking around but it does piss off the people shopping in the mall that are parked in the other end, so having to exit the mall is pointless, just like having to go outside the mall to go around to Rome's. I am sure people that work in the mall would appreciate being able to access Romes from the inside if they need to grab a couple of small items during their lunch break.

Canadian Tire does it, so why can't Wal-Mart?

If this is going to be permanent thing, build a wall up and never give a hint that there is a door because people will walk down the corridor and will be pissed only to find that it's closed.

I was there over the holidays, so if it has changed, then great!
Stevie-E 1/9/2013 10:30:09 AM Report

I don't live in fear and I can judge whomever I wish. You people are wayy too sensitive.

Okay, unarmed guards for you crybabies..as long as there's a body that appears to have some sense of authority.

If the guard has no reason to suspect you have anything and you tell him that with an honest face, you're good to go. However, when some loser with an oversized coat on with baggy jeans walks by and acts nervous, then check the little bugger.

There are ways of filtering people by body and facial language

(Customs workers do it every day)

Some of these comments are ridiculous. Poor grammar and punctuation like as if your reading from a 6th grader.

Happy belated birthday Elvis. He's out there somewhere!!!!!
chrispoitras86 1/9/2013 11:51:59 AM Report

Steve-E,
What are you talking about? I've been to the Walmart there throughout the holidays, and was just there 2 days ago, and there was a mall entrance. As far as I know, Carter's is the only store in the Station Mall that doesn't have an entrance inside the mall.
zartan 1/9/2013 12:03:37 PM Report

N1T5, it is "you're", not "your". That's fifth grade stuff.
Jamie333 1/9/2013 1:28:51 PM Report

Shoplifters or rather thieves come in all forms. Security and store employees can't just choose to stop and check the bags or search the person of young people, guys with baggy pants or jackets, or people that they think look like shoplifters. It's called discrimination. That notion is almost as ridiculous as posting armed guards on premises. Absolutely absurd.
the coach 1/9/2013 1:40:51 PM Report

THE RAT THAT WANTED TO SMELL LIKE A PLAYBOY, SOUNDS LIKE THE NAME OF A BOOK. But you people with the very poor grammar, go to school.
shaddow 1/9/2013 1:54:33 PM Report

Since day #1, (the opening of S/M Walmart) the entrance from the Station Mall 'HAS' been open, until the Station Mall stores close early, 6 PM on Saturday & 5 PM on Sunday. The Walmart store is open until 10 PM, the same as The Walmart on the hill. Walmart close the entrance/exit doors shortly after the S/M stores are all closed down. The Soo stores have the 'close up as early as possible' attitude & then complain that people are shopping across the River. Thank God Walmart has 2 stores that are open till 10 PM - 7 days a week, other than on Stat. Holidays, to keep lots of people on this side of the river. You can almost get everything you need, at these stores. THANK YOU WALMART............
zartan 1/9/2013 2:10:23 PM Report

Hey coach, I'm not sure if you can start a sentence with a conjunction.
hitch 1/9/2013 4:09:41 PM Report

How come there isn't an entrance to the mall like zellers had? (I haven't been in mall in years--but I would think it would be better to have a mall entrance no?) I would not go there to check out at all now--thanks for the heads up!
Working Man 1/9/2013 7:52:14 PM Report

If the security observes it happen, they why, exactly, do they wait until the individual leaves the store?

I'm not saying that 'I' wouldn't warn the person if 'I' was a security guard. I would think of it as 'fun' and would probably be laughing my ass off while viewing the live footage.. They need action in their lives too!!! Hey, they messed up on their dreams of being a real cop!!!

Stevie-E,

They don't need armed guards at entrances for security. They have a machine that goes off if you steal something--obviously--and they know which items can't be read by the thing and they watch for that.

Although I have 'never, ever' stolen an item in my life from any store/person, etc.. There are items that you can get away with no problem.

You 'can' read people's body language, yes, but they don't have the time, or the knowledge, to read 'every single persons' body language that walks about the store. And much of the language that is going on is ambiguous anyways. 'Customs workers???'' hehe.. Please..... They're amatures.....

Hitch,

Didn't you read ''shaddow's'' comment?
Mel687 1/10/2013 11:33:44 AM Report

I hate to inform all of you that there are laws in this country and you can't just search someone because of their style of dress. If that were the case then every kid walking down the street would be searched and stopped by cops. They can't call it theft until the item has left the premisis, otherwise everyone with an item in their cart would be stealing. Think about it people, if you are getting one item and you put it under your arm while you are shopping... you are concealing it and are stealing? They have to make an attempt to leave the store without paying before security can do anything. And really armed guards for a guy taking purfume... get a grip there NRA its not like the guy held up the store by gunpoint and got away!
soohero 1/10/2013 12:37:14 PM Report

lol zartan. I try not to always be a grammar nazi but sometimes it's too damn hard to resist. Proper grammar and clear sentences suggest respect. The thing is, good grammar adds credibility, especially on the web. If you type “your” when you mean “you’re,” you lose instant credibility with your fans, followers, connections, clients, prospects, employees, and your mom.

It's ammusing to see someone correct anothers grammar only to make an error themselves. What these poor individuals do not know is that by trying to seem smart, they actually look more dumb or stupid than the people they are correcting.

When comforting someone guilty of using poor grammar I always say softly, "there, their, they're."
