Program cuts 'a slap in the face to Ontario’s youth': NDP

NDP: Ontario Rangers get a lump of coal from Liberals

TIMMINS – NDP Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson says the Liberal government’s decision to cancel the overnight Ontario Rangers program, as part of over $7 million in cuts to provincial parks, is a slap in the face to Ontario’s youth, and park users.

“While the Liberals are nickel-and-diming the North to death, they are handing out cushy bonuses to their executive friends in the public sector,” said Bisson. “The $21 million they spent on bonuses to managers could easily have saved our parks and Rangers three times over. Ontarians are sick of seeing Liberals pay out big bonuses to managers and executives, especially when valuable Northern programs and services are being eliminated.”

In December, about 4,700 senior Ontario bureaucrats received bonuses totalling $21.5 million or roughly $4,500 per manager.

Supporters and former Rangers are protesting the program cuts at Queen’s Park today.

“In the grand scheme of things, this program cost the province very little, and had huge benefits for everyone involved,” said Bisson. “For many program participants, this was a life-changing program, and parks benefited from additional workers and community involvement.”

The program began in 1944, and offered youth from across the province the chance to live and work in a provincial park for eight weeks.

The program is being replaced with a day program.

“These youth had an opportunity to become more independent, meet youth from across Ontario, and live and work in some of the most beautiful areas in the province,” explained Bisson. “The new day program simply can’t compare. It will be inaccessible to most urban youth, many of whom otherwise would not have the chance to spend time in our parks. Once again, Northerners are completely missing from the McGuinty Liberals’ radar.”

"In December, about 4,700 senior Ontario bureaucrats received bonuses totalling $21.5 million or roughly $4,500 per manager".

This is absolutely sinful !!!! How can this possibly be explained as simply part of doing business and we have to accept it.

It's time politicians got off their self imposed pedestal and got back down to the same levels of ordinary Canadians. We need accountability in this instace and other factions that exist like this "idle no more". The big problem we have today in our liberal society is this non-stop, abused and endless culture of entitlement.

These small special interest groups like senior bureaucrats, chiefs of first nations and, yes, even school teachers who all live very well as compared to the general population, yet they take a huge chunk of the beef and the rest of us get to nibble and, of course, pay the (tax) bill.

Maybe it's time for the hard working, tax paying middle class Canadians to remain "IDLE NO MORE". Personally, I think we've got a pretty good case.
I just hope Harper's Conservative government remains steadfast and our provincial Liberals are prepared to remain firm. We ca not afford not to act and hold their feet to the fire.

This Country just can not continue down this pitiful road and, again, politicians better wake up and listen and start representing that vast majority of the average, middle class Canadians. Without these average folks, this Country would be nothing better than a third class nation.

For those who went through the Ranger program like I did, understand how important it is, the fun, the experience and the knowledge. Wish I could have been at the rally.

First you say......
"This is absolutely sinful !!!! How can this possibly be explained as simply part of doing business and we have to accept it."

Then you go on to say you hope the Harper gov't and provincial Libs hold firm.

Who the heck do you think gave those managers that obscene raise ?

As usual, you are just another politician coming on here to say what you think we want to hear.

You are obviously "unimformed"to the issues at hand concerning the poor & middle class people of this country!I for instance am a senior & have to exist on ODSP.I became unable to work since 1990 when I developed a serious back disease thats required 2 surgeries. I was raised to be self supporting since I was 12,Unfortunatly I travelled around working in Canada but never paid enough into a pension plane to retire with any pension. The phrase "Idle No More" is NOT a statement that applies to the Native Population but to all Canadians that are fed up of living in poverty becausse of lack of jobs, disabilities & not able to afford higher education. This government structer has far exceeded its intended purpose of "SERVING" ITS POPULATIN For Us Canadians who are less fortunate this government is working to keep the poor poorer & the rich richer.I suggest you read up on the miss treatment of our Aboriginal peoples that were "born" in this country from parents that go far back in generations as natural born Natives of this North American land.We didnt get here by boats as immagrants...We are born Annisanabbi(1st peoples!!! )
