Toronto protesters rally for women in India

Thursday, January 03, 2013   by: Staff

TORONTO - Dozens of protesters rallied outside the Indian consulate in Toronto to add their support to calls for better treatment of women following the death of a woman gang raped on a bus in New Delhi.

Demonstrators braved a winter chill Thursday to hoist posters and call for men in India to better respect women, and criticized what they say is an Indian legal system that ignores violence against females.

The death last weekend of the 23-year-old university student symbolically named "Damini" after a violent rape on a bus in the Indian capital has sparked daily protests there and a heated discussion about treatment of women.

Activists there marked a "black day" Thursday as charges were filed against five men accused of raping and brutally beating the woman.

The counts include murder, rape and other charges, which could result in the men receiving death sentences.

Toronto protest organizer Parveen Gill says respect for women should be taught to boys in India.

"Start from the very first day when a male child is born and teach them what moral values are and why it's important to actually respect women," she said.
