Provincial NDP make misleading claims on economic record

Ontario NDP have never balanced a single budget

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Provincial NDP are once again making misleading claims about their ability to manage the province’s finances.

Their record while in government and the numerous times they have voted against important economic investments for Northern Ontario since 2003 clearly illustrates that they are not good fiscal managers and that they do not understand the economic needs of northern Ontario.

“The Provincial NDP abandoned their core promises while in government by failing to balance a single budget and led Ontario to the brink of bankruptcy,” said David Orazietti, MPP. “In addition, over the past nine years they have voted against every single economic stimulus plan that delivered funding for important infrastructure projects in Sault Ste. Marie and opposed increases to the NOHFC, which has supported over 4,500 business projects across the North.”

Examples of Sault Ste. Marie infrastructure projects the provincial NDP voted against include:

  • $408 million Sault Area Hospital
  • $130 million Five New Schools
  • $40 million New Long-Term Care Home
  • $16.5 million Huron Central Rail
  • $15 million Invasive Species Research Centre
  • $10.3 million Algoma University Biosciences Centre
  • $9.5 million Sault College Academic Building
  • $9.3 million  Algoma Public Health Building
  • $6.2 million West End Recreation Centre
  • $3.5 million Third Line Extension
  • $3.1 million Hub Trail and Waterfront Walkway

In addition, the NDP voted against four consecutive increases to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) which increased the program from $60 million to $100 million to create new jobs and support economic development.

The NDP also voted against creating the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate Program, which has resulted in a combined savings of $41 million over 3 years for Essar Steel Algoma, Tenaris Tubes and Flakeboard.

While in government, the NDP drove the Sault’s unemployment rate to a record high of 19% and cut $60 million from the NOHFC budget.

They also cut medical school spaces, making the doctor shortage worse, cut nursing positions by 3000 and built no new hospitals.

In addition, they cut up-front OSAP grants to college and university students and rejected Algoma University’s application requesting independence.

“Provincial NDP members like Gilles Bisson claim to be listening to northerners, but failed to listen when they were in government,” said Orazietti. “More recently, the disappointing NDP voting record clearly shows a lack of support for initiatives that benefit Sault residents.”

Agent Zoey 12/13/2012 10:28:11 AM Report

But Orazietti approved OLG's Moderinzation plan that will put 1000 employees out of work in Sault Ste. Marie, by allowing the government to Privitize out the cash cow. How does that Protect jobs in the North.
streaker 12/13/2012 10:46:39 AM Report

How can you display such critisism Mr.David "O"When your government is operating on a limitless bank account and plunging this province into banckruptcy.by your ridiculous green energy plan which is driving seniors into poverty, taking in prime agricultural land for solar panels, unsightly windfarms,The hydro is so costly that manufacturing industries are folding .Your government has cut off wood cutting and closed up a viable wood industry in dubreuilville, and what about the wawa flakeboard plant. The wood manufacturing in other northern communities, the nortland railway, and on and on and on.Also your premier has porogued the government sittings while still popping up and spending Canadian tax dollars for worthless programs. All day kindergarten is just a baby sitting project to help two family workers while us taxpayers foot the bill for teachers baby sitting these four year old children. Mr David "O" WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS !!!

i am wondering if the 41 million in savings for essar tenaris and flake board came on the backs of all electric costomers in the form of outragious rate hikes by companies that could care less about their workers or the community..just ask some of the suppliers of material if they get paid for material and services by these so called good corporate citizens
Truck 12/13/2012 11:05:28 AM Report

David O needs to go!!!! Period!

He supported putting OLG out of business here in SSM....He does NOT support jobs in the north! He tows the party line just like the rest of the gutless wonders in parliament!
BlackHelix 12/13/2012 11:14:45 AM Report

When did he do that? Go back and do a search. He COMMITTED to keeping the OLG jobs here.
BlackHelix 12/13/2012 11:15:11 AM Report

And maybe I'm wrong, but the OLG jobs are still here
Truck 12/13/2012 11:25:46 AM Report

You go back and do your research...there's nothing in the OLG Modernization plan that stipulates the OLG jobs stay here!
KMF61MCF 12/13/2012 11:30:19 AM Report

David O blows smoke out his a## go back to Teaching hope they rip you apart!
vmac 12/13/2012 11:50:38 AM Report

Nothing much worse than a whining politician. This little rant is a perfect example of lack in testicular fortitude. Sounds like a kid who got mad and took all his toys out of the sandbox for the other kids not to play with cause he is not getting his way. Must be nice to have that kind of time.
deputy dan 12/13/2012 12:10:42 PM Report

maybe we should see what they wanted libs to include in these bills and why would they vote a hospital that was already slated to be built
learningaswego 12/13/2012 4:03:52 PM Report

David O sets the record straight once again, with FACTS.

The leftist lemmings and Dippers usually have ZERO interest in the facts, just rhetoric and hyperbole.
OMGWTF 12/13/2012 4:45:12 PM Report

So soon we forget. Not that I love the NDP but when Rae came into office there was suppose to be a $250 Million surplus according to the outgoing government. When he got in they discovered a $750 Million deficit. That was a nonstarter and the main reason we got Rae days etc etc. Now David O has brought a lot of money to SSM, unlike Bryan Hayes who has done nothing financially for us. Now if you want to talk about OLG job losses you better hope Hudack doesn't get in since all he wants to do is strip all revenue generating businesses out of government control. OLG and the LCBO do not use tax dollars, they create wealth that offsets possible tax increases. Now doing away with that is the mark of an idiot.
BlackHelix 12/13/2012 5:21:33 PM Report

@Truck

...Except the statements made by both the OLG CEO and David Orazetti. It also doesn't say that the jobs will NOT be here. Not having a documented plan for keeping jobs is not the same as saying he supports loosing them.
girlfriend 12/13/2012 5:30:39 PM Report

I think David is lashing out - out of desperation! First it was the article in the Sault This Week - where he twisted the facts about Teachers' Unions. Now he is trying to fight through Sootoday against the NDP. I guess he has a lot of time to write since he isn't working right now. Maybe the NDP and PC's should legislate the Liberals back to work! I also enjoyed the money wasted on the coloured pamphlets sent to every household in SSM outlining his alleged accomplishments. Good way to spend our tax dollars - even though they cry they don't have any money to spend!
I'm In 12/13/2012 5:36:01 PM Report

And what party does Bob Rae belong to now, he was a liberal in orange the turncoat, when he sucked in Ontarians from 1992 until he got the boot and look who took over Harris the PC who even created more debt by causing funding cuts and giving his rich friends tax payer money. Then in McGuinty first term he spent like there was no tomorrow, promised the world to every
Ontarian and now that the economy is weak he didn't control spending and is putting this province into bankruptcy for his eratic waste of taxpayer money, so who's next they are all crooks and should be held for Treason. At least ANDREA HORWATH wants your input on government spending. So back to the classroom you go David O and maybe you can run one of your daycare classes you call school for the 4 year olds.
bumbacco 12/13/2012 7:31:03 PM Report

Orazetti has nothing to worry about! He is a teacher and although he screwed them supporting bill 115 and took sick time and benefits and collective bargaining rights away from them and the support staff in schools. He did shine in government to get re elected and now at what around 45 has two full federal pensions to retire on. Very soon the next bill will come out the municiapal sectors bill which will screw EVERYONE way to go dave nice legacy.
shorty38 12/13/2012 8:18:00 PM Report

I think most responsible persons would have voted against a lot of the infastructure dollars that Sault Ste Marie received, how can you vote to spend what you don't have.
Think about that Mr. Dave.
