CITY POLICE NEWS RELEASE

*************************

Upcoming traffic disruptions

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to advise the public of potential upcoming traffic disruptions in the area of Great northern Road.

On Thursday, December 13, 2012, the North Shore Tribal Council will be holding a planned rally beginning at 11:30 a.m. near the Cambrian Mall.

The rally will proceed North on Great northern Road and is anticipated to end at MPP David Orazietti’s office just north of Second Line around 2 p.m.

The public is advised to anticipate some delay and disruption to traffic in the area; however, the disruption to businesses is expected to be minimal.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will be in attendance working with the organizers to monitor the situation and ensure the safe and orderly movement of traffic and the rally participants.

To assist in minimizing the impact, people travelling in the affected area are encouraged to take alternate routes to their destinations.

Well planned to disrupt anyone who needs to get through that area for lunch, meetings, or to the hospital.

Can't say anything against the Indians, but on the other hand, hope it rains...:)

Maybe MPP David Orazietti should move his office!!!

Is the Union is paying for the Police Escort???
Prrrrrrr 12/11/2012 2:13:51 PM Report

Oh my mistake, thought it was a Union thing...ok...well who pays for the escort?
archer 12/11/2012 2:16:07 PM Report

Another effort to gain supposed entitlement!
If we demonstrated in this manner, we would probably end up in jail but we just keep on giving.
Of course, we don't want to appear racist or predjudiced.
bulletcards 12/11/2012 2:19:47 PM Report

there they go again. I wish i was legally allowed to block traffic, the rail way or the highway and cover my identiy with a bandanna around my face. I am all for legal protest and such but they get away with way too much way too often.
KMF61MCF 12/11/2012 2:20:39 PM Report

Protest until your face turns blue like a smurf. Government really does not give a rat a** and will do as they see fit.
Left Winger 12/11/2012 2:26:30 PM Report

waa waa waa, now the fun begins with all the poor little babies on here crying about a little disruption. Lots of side streets etc along the route to avoid any real delay. Come on peeps grow up for christ sakes, especially at this time of year.

as long as they have the proper permit there's not much your whining will accomplish,so get over your important little selves and perhaps join the demonstration, who knows maybe some where down the road you or a loved one will be in a similiar position and will be crying that the govt took away the program.
j-slice 12/11/2012 2:27:34 PM Report

I love the "THEY " comments, saddens me that this still occurs today ! Then we question why our youth are so lost in direction ! Just a thought . !
Prrrrrrr 12/11/2012 2:42:13 PM Report

Entitlement pretty much says it all. I say we get the Mayor to proclaim a "I AM AN ENTITLED PERSON DAY" or "I AM A PISSED OFF PERSON DAY" and get all the whining out of the way...all these marches do is create misery for the general public. This whole idea of causing a disturbance if you can't get what you want from the government...plus getting a free police escort well you're at it "SHOULD BE ILLEGAL"!!! This is not just about Native marches...any march that cost me as a taxpayer money turns me into a PISSED OFF PERSON!!!
j-slice 12/11/2012 3:09:46 PM Report

i am proud of all my rights as a Canadian ! This includes the right to march and protest in peace ! This is what makes us the GREATEST nation on planet earth ! I suport any race , religion and sexual orientation in this right !!!!!
Just Curious 12/11/2012 3:10:26 PM Report

Left Winger, one doesn't have to wonder about whether you are indian or not but I do question your comment about side streets. Unless they have added one in the last few days you don't get past 2nd line on a"side street".Peoples road or Black rd is a long way to go for a side street.. Sure wouldn`t want you as a guide in the bush...:)
moem 12/11/2012 3:20:27 PM Report

Archer

Did the teachers and care staff end up in jail when they did it? And for those who didn't read up on this rally it's in protest to govt cuts to community start up through odsp and ow so they are fighting for those in poverty regardless of their ethnicity... Of course people on here see that it's aboriginals and therefore decide to make it us vs them when in reality it's to give a voice to those already marginalized. The gap between the rich and poor is widening and all the middle income people who cast judgment and look down on the poor better keep in mind that as cuts increase eventually you will be affected, the cuts start with the poor but they will continue, wait until we really have to start paying more for our health care.... If you don't support the cause don't come out but you don't have to make your whiney comments that border on racism either!! I bet there will be plenty of non-native people there!!!
Slick Nick 12/11/2012 4:08:26 PM Report

Regardless of race, no one should be blocking traffic. Rally somewhere a bit safer if you must. Some poor person could end up getting hit, and who knows what kind of outcome that will bring.

B Boy 12/11/2012 4:19:12 PM Report

Left Winger- "waa waa waa, now the fun begins with all the poor little babies on here crying about a little disruption. Lots of side streets etc along the route to avoid any real delay"

You can keep telling yourself that from the back of an ambulance while your heart is being shocked back into beating. Yes even 30 seconds can be the different between life & death.

B Boy 12/11/2012 4:23:40 PM Report

J-Slice - sometime give the Charter of Rights and Freedoms a read. It's a little surprising how few rights we as Canadians actually have.
ThinkAgain 12/11/2012 5:45:23 PM Report

Natives do what they want when they want at our expense.
What happens if emergency vehicles need to pass?
Why should I be involved with a disruption?

I hope we get heavy snow and then see the participants if any?

ehbcd2 12/11/2012 6:48:44 PM Report

So go protest their protest if it bothers you.
THE Warrior 12/11/2012 6:55:39 PM Report

There is a protest. It is happening. All people of Canada are a part of what is being protested.. The fact of the matter is that all Canadian people are affected by what is going on. You should read up on all the decisions that the government is making. You sit there and inhale those native cigarettes you've become use to. ( not everyone ). You smoke your little marijuana pipes, then sit on your behinds. Native Nations are rising for their people, it is not their fault you chose to sit and except what the government does to you. and i mean Canadian citizens when i say you.. They have the Balls to stand up for what is their's. If Canadian citizens chose to allow Harper to destroy a culture then so be it. But guess who is next in the pecking order, and i'll bet there aren't to many people making about 40000 a year on here.. Good Luck to all. Native Nations will rise.. Thanks to Stephen Harper.
I'm In 12/11/2012 7:05:33 PM Report

ehbcd2: right on,. thats why people that post on this site don't know what the protest is all about at least the FIRST NATION's people have the balls to protest and yes we all should be joining them because these cuts will affect every Ontarian come Jan 1st, 2013, cause I bet every poster on this site has a family member/relative in receipt of OW/ODSP. Racism is alive and well in Sault Ste. Marie
rcamp211 12/11/2012 7:19:15 PM Report

i have the balls to protest but i have to work to support my family! :-)
Tommy2Toes 12/11/2012 7:58:13 PM Report

Maybe the rest of us should block their protest route? This is getting ridiculous! More,more,more....gimme,gimme,gimme! Get a job and stop wasting my tax dollars
Christina216 12/11/2012 8:27:50 PM Report

this protest has been happening all across ontario..traffic will still be able to pass..emergency vehicles will get through without delay. their not stopping traffic completely...i understand about the abusers on odsp and ow...but what about the real needy?
happy camper 12/11/2012 9:30:55 PM Report

I hate to agree with the natives on any thing as they do get to much but if we all stuck togeather and marched in a united front ( I dont care what race you are. Hopefully the human race. ) The government would do what it is supposed to do. Look after all of the people. We need to start paying attention to all governments in this country and see how they are screwing all of the people. Out of all kinds of things. just saying.
bruno-b 12/11/2012 10:21:10 PM Report

Hey ,David Orizetti, why dont you rent an office trailer from Christies and set up a temporary office up at the Cambrian mall on thursday, and give the tax payers of this city a break. Bite the bullit and do the right and smart thing!!!!!END IT BEFORE IT STARTS!!!!!!!
Poshkitty 12/11/2012 10:25:54 PM Report

Everyone has a right to rally for a cause!! It is an organized rally with proper permits!! Chill out people...the police escort are there to make sure everyone stays safe and if an emergency vehicle needs to pass the police will direct the flow accordingly!
moem 12/11/2012 10:36:16 PM Report

Again with the racism... Mike99 they do so pay tax!! And yes we did take their land and we did a whole lot more... I wouldn't sound so proud if I were you!!! Im sure your post is going soon!! Read some history books and of course the most important point this isn't about natives it's about poverty, but it just so happens they are taking a stand!! I didn't see all these complaints when the union held their protests!!!

And as for having a job it's noon hour, and many people there will be from agencies that advocate for the poor BUT hey for that matter if it's about people having jobs... Why are you all complaining about the traffic won't you "better than everyone else people" be at YOUR jobs?????
Norm 12/11/2012 10:43:55 PM Report

Waste of time, David will be in Toronto. Why don't natives march in front of David's house on the weekend, Hayes's too. It's not about the MPP, MP, it's about their rights to do what they like on the land they feel is theirs. A peaceful march it's not. No one but the natives would be allowed to block traffic, period.
Norm 12/11/2012 10:50:41 PM Report

Posh, you would of been a dandy in Caledonia. Last poster before me sounded a bit racist.

Prrrrrrr 12/12/2012 1:03:46 AM Report

I don't care who is marching...I want to know who is paying for the police attending these walks. Are the organizers being billed? Having police officers attending on stand by or whatever they want to call it will cost money....anybody have an answer?

Article reads....
Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will be in attendance working with the organizers to monitor the situation and ensure the safe and orderly movement of traffic and the rally participants.
Sam The Dog 12/12/2012 8:02:56 AM Report

The protesting will never stop, so some planning by the city is in dire need. The intersection of Grt Northern and 2nd line is already deemed the busiest and most dangerous. "Algobryan" has the right idea to move David Orazetti's office. I think the east end in the area of the Rankin Arena would be more benificial to serve the tax payers of the Soo.
"Prr" The protesters don't block the roads, the Police do, In a planned protest such as this, Police bring extra officers in on overtime with extra vehicles, extra gas, extra expense's which all in turn is charged to you "The Tax Payer"
It would be very interesting to ask our Police Chief the cost of such a demostration. I think he would gladly tell you but our City councilors, mayor and Chief Administrator would have a gag order on him not to reveal this info.
I think we should all ask our City Council as to how much a this demostration cost the "tax payers". I'll bet ya you won't get an honest answer.

The teachers get paid from our tax dollars too, and cutting their sick days to 10 is not unreasonable they didn't earn the right to roll over days and retire early nobody should have that right!! Sick days are for being sick,

People have a right to protest, the racism is unacceptable that ends up on here....

And who knows maybe some day the people on here who judge and look down on others might just find themselves in need of help!!!!

There are sooooo many people in the Soo who have jobs only because they got them back in the day when you didn't even need highschool... Those people know who they are and they should be thankful so if you're sitting there reading these comments with your grade 10 education and your good job you should keep quiet and be thankful that you're not out looking for a job now.... The kind of mean spiritedness me me me attitude you see a lot on here is likely due to lack of education, ignorance and a lifetime living only in the Soo!!!! Hopefully the generation of children growing up now will be more compassionate and caring about their fellow man
Adam L 12/12/2012 10:42:51 PM Report

Disgusting racism on here its sickening. Warrior you hit the nail on the head its not just first nations rights at risk, harpers after us all. I find alot of the rudest posters always complaining about "wasted tax dollars" and "get a job ya bums" always seem to be arguing and being ignorant on here between 9-5 sounds like taxpayer paid govt workers who should be i dont know??? doing their job instead of trolling soo today. Just saying!
moem 12/12/2012 10:53:26 PM Report

AdamL

I agree except that given the content and writing level I would assume that most of them are actually people working for just above minimum wage and think that makes them better than everyone else, or perhaps govt workers who got hired before you needed an education!! And yes the racism is rampant... I went back and reread the article and posts from when the teachers did this and shockingly almost none of the people commenting on this article were outraged by the teachers protest... At least not enough to post, makes you wonder why this traffic disruption is different??? And the teachers did it on Saturday when people are out and about enjoying their time with family yet this protest is happening when people are at work, weird.... There are 3 certainties in life death, taxes and racist comments on every single article on sootoday that mentions our first nations people!!

What really struck me as odd was the public outcry when that innocent girl from the university had the bucket of water thrown on her... I too was thoroughly disgusted by that but I was really surprised at the number of people who were shocked to see racism in the Soo!!!
Adam L 12/12/2012 11:04:27 PM Report

moem

Ya you're probably right paying 30 dollars a week in tax will give a person the entitlement to crap on all people less fortunate lol. As for that story about that woman having water thrown on her, i didnt read the comments because i knew there would be outrage as i was but the fact that all the worst posters would not be present because they probably thought it was cool, for shame! This is not the city i grew up in... sigh!
shaddow 12/14/2012 5:04:55 AM Report

I have read everything from the story line - to the pictures - to the comments & have a few comments to make without any malice intended, to anyone. The majority in attendance at the protest was Natives - teens & middle aged. The pictures were of Natives protesting with signs. The comments on here were from both natives & other persons. As to racism there was some from BOTH sides & the first one using that 'racism' word was a native complaining & that's what started it to get meaner. It seems that every time the native people complain on here there is a problem. Some good people, on both sides, do not see eye to eye. The moment the 'racism' word pops up - all hell breaks loose. Many good people making comments have been bounced off of here & most were because of that word. To me that word should be banned as it is being used as a weapon against people that are expressing a sincere expression, without any malice, and has been taken as being 'racism'. I have never seen that word used so often as lately & to me it is uncalled for. * Just My Opinion *
