The second male was wearing a costume similar to Spider Man but with a red and blue cloak and carrying a bag.
One of the employees of the store was assaulted and was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.
The robbers left without getting anything from the store.

It sounds like a planned robbery. I will bet a dollar to a donut that they are from Boston Ave area. Just my opinion but since they seemed to attempt the robbery & left with nothing, it makes sense they live in that area............
maltese 11/1/2012 12:20:01 AM Report
I agree with most of these posts....these robbers don't exactly stand on a corner & advertise their intent to rob like prostitutes do, so how are the cops supposed to prevent this crime from happening. Most businesses usually post a note reguarding no entry in costume but most of these individuals don't follow the law so don't care. I hope the staff member is OK. That must have been an extremely stressful experience. This may result in PTSD down the line (no one thinks of the after effects). Also, give the cops a break already...doesn't everyone take coffe breaks on their jobs.....some people a little longer than they should? Come on...fess up. As for hallowe'en - I think in the society of today & all the crime that goes on, I wouldn't want my children going door to door. I know most parent(s)walk with their children but still...
My daughter took her children to a church organized party - much safer. Wait til the news reports come out tomorrow about tampered with candy. Back to the robbery....they probably are from the Boston Ave area unfortunately. I hope they receive their just punishment.

By the way....thank you to Shaw Cable for helping keep the streets safe for the little children who like to go out. That was a great idea!

I agree Maltese
Halloween is about the little ones all excited to dress up and be accompanied by the parents having a great safe time.
Thank you to the Shaw Brigade!!!!!
The robbery was a seriously pathetic attempt. I'll bet that the shotgun was a costume gun and the people responsible are between the ages of 12 and 17.
This totally disgusts me.
That's why I think the solution to this fiasco is have designated parties for the little ones.........supervised at the schools. This would eliminate the thugs that enjoy terrorizing people.
I hate to see tomorrow's headlines about needles or drugs. I really hope not.

A very good example of this is the very similar incident in the soo last January where another local jeweller was held at gunpoint. The robber even SHOT AT THE OWNER. He was caught and sentenced to 8 months in jail even after having been caught for robbing not one, but two banks in western Canada. Not a very scary punishment for a very serious crime.
The Police are doing their jobs, they catch many criminals, but our justice system is much to lenient. People aren't affraid of the consequences for these actions.

Really?? Seems to me with all the repeat offenders in this town, our court is not very hard on them. Criminals in canada do not get near what they deserve and its a joke. Obviously criminals do not take the courts seriously and know they won't spend much time behind bars, its a shame, we need the death penalty for serious violent offences/rapes so we, the taxpayers do not have to support as many low lives that are in jail. Get rid of the murderers amd rapists and let the petty theives rot in a cell for years
BlackHelix 11/1/2012 11:15:03 AM Report
This is exactly what I mean. The example you gave is just simply untrue. A quick Google search and you can find out the real facts.
- The incident was in April, not January.
- The offender did not shoot anyone (the gun was not even real)
- The offender did not utter any threats or pull the gun out in the store.
- He was sentenced to 15 months in jail in addition to the 106 days already served - not 8 months. He was then sentenced to 18 months probation after released and imposed a lifetime weapons ban.
Human memory is incredibly flawed. We remember things in very different ways. Not only that, but we often regurgitate statements that others say without really evaluating if it's true or not. The only way to have discussions like this is to look at the real evidence.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that people who are "apart of the system" don't have anywhere to go since the government has cut so many programs and funding. These people have to feed themselves & families and also, for many, pay for the their drug habits. What option do they have?
I'm not speaking for 100% of the B & Es because let's be honest... some kids just are just stupid and having "fun" but let's look at the big picture here. Do you really think that all these people are doing it for "fun"? Or... do they NEED money to survive? Crime is rising in this city and instead of complaining about it... what can we do it stop it? We are letting people down.

I can't believe this. What the heck is going on with our city? It seems to be getting worse every year yet Chief Davies is saying crime has gone down. I wonder if he is getting paid under the table to say all these fictitious things. Corruption is making this city turn into a dump with no way of turning around if nothing is done or no one is held accountable for their actions.
shaddow 11/1/2012 12:31:03 PM Report
nicole1414 - Have you had experience with these thieves that they steal to feed their family & pay for drugs? Have you supplied drugs to someone to get them started? Thieves are out to help themselves because they are too lazy to work & if on drugs - they did it to themselves without the help of the general population/society/taxpayer. We never forced them to take drugs so why defend them when (or) if they steal? They can get a job if they were not such lazy losers. When tearjerkers' ,like you, defend their actions that helps create most of the crime problems. We the people that work are the people that suffer. I say if a person breaks into your home & robs you be sure to thank them & wish them well. If it's my home I will beat them to pulp so that they 'remember' that I worked for what I have & I'm not a 'tearjerker' but someone who protects my home, property & family to the fullest - no holds barred. Just my opinion. Have a Great Day........

Yes I have had things stolen from me and let me tell you, it was the most frusterating experience I have ever delt with. I can completely relate to the people in this city that have been victims to similar circumstances.
You can't generalize all thieves.. just like you can't say all police officers are horrible or all white people are this.. or all black people are this. Wake up.
Have you been to some of these homes? Some kids are doomed from the very beginning. I tthink you are a lucky person if you have 1 parent who loves and supports you and doesn't bully or abuse you. And.. that's just the beginning. Some kids don't have a hope in hell and when we close our doors on them and don't offer our help, what do you think their reaction is going to be? How would you feel? I'm not saying each of them have an excuse. Not at all. But open your eyes to the big picture here.
So some kids get abused and kicked out, they steal things to pawn off to survive and feed themselves beacuse no one will help them. Every agency is out of money and can't get help from the government.
I am so blessed for what I have. I feel horrible for these kinds of circumstances, not the losers who are in the 1% of crime in this city.

As for the poor hearts on here who feel society has done this to these poor people...please save us the drama....You make choices in life and if you decide to make the wrong choices I can assure you that you will be paying for it the rest of your days.remember that next time you decide to steal something thats not yours..
I can see some criminal getting seriously hurt or killed in the very near future if this keeps up...Then what Davies???? Then watch the crying...Oh he wasnt going to hurt anyone he was just stealing, he didnt really deserve to be shot or beat up he was just a troubled youth!!!!!!!!!!
All you thiefs should remember one thing not everyone is going to react the same....Just sayin..... watch your steps....people dont like your kind!!!!!!

If you think using Sootoday is a good "source", you're sadly mistaken. This article is the initial Police report - not the sentencing where most of the evidence is presented. That's why they use words like "alleged".
Also, where does it say that the firearm was real? This is why we have a justice system. Because you stated you're willing to convict a man to life in prison based on information WE KNOW is just not true.

I recently had my LOCKED SUV stolen right from my driveway. I live off Caddy Ave. in the east end and this is the 3rd time(that I know of)within a few months that the theives have stolen personal items from our area. You can read October 23rd Sootoday report titled "Rash of east end thefts" to read the entire story. I know some of my other neighbours have had items stolen and they don't even report the thefts any longer because the police have done nothing to help. This may be a time for us citizens to form a type of vigilante justice group to keep our homes & neighbourhoods safe for our families. The facts are we are becoming an aging population in this city and are slowly being seen as "easy prey" by the criminals who seem to know they can commit these crimes in the same areas without getting caught. As I stated, in my little neighbourhood alone there has been 3 times (probably more) in less than 2 months, that they have rifled through our vehicles and stolen ipods, etc. I think there should be a citizens task force formed to assist the police in apprehending these sneaky creatures as the police cars are easily seen, but citizens are not as big a threat to them. I would be willing to donate my time on weekends & weeknights to help this get off the ground if I can get others of like mind to contribute their time as well. Evenings ONLY (dusk til dawn) should send a message out to these "bad guys" that we are not going to roll over and wait for the police to catch them. Can I get a "Hell Ya?"

"The 27-year-old was convicted of attempted robbery, unlawfully possessing a dangerous imitation firearm, using an imitation firearm to commit an indictable offence, possession of cocaine and two counts of breach of probation". Yes they call it an "imitation" but take note of the important word "dangerous" and later the words "shell casings" and "gun". Classify it as you wish; I call it a REAL GUN if it is dangerous. As for the period of time that he was given, it looks as though my source may be old, but either way I feel it isn't enough to scare others. These are serious crimes.

I am sorry Nicole, but bleeding hearts like you are the reason our justice system is failing. There comes a day when you have to stop blaming people's upbringing and defending them because they have to "survive". There are many, many people that have had terrible upbringings and aren't criminals. There are places to get food, etc so there is no need to rob and steal. My father in law is a example of someone who had no adult to direct him growing up and he was severely abused and neglected as a child and ended up putting himself through medical school. He chose a different path. Everyone has choices in life. Just because someone may have had a difficult path, does not entitle them to a free pass in the responsibilty department.

The question now is intervention or retaliation.
speed7 11/1/2012 8:20:49 PM Report
The justice system has failed these individuals. They need to have stricter sentencing. They would not go out and choose crime over and over again if it were otherwise. And the sob story about society has failed these young people is so lame. Some of these people could find it too easy to say they had it so bad or were bullied as a kid tormented well, they could have asked for some help. Not let it fester and get worse? There is help out there but if you dont take the steps then dont blame society for it . We all do have choices like a previous commenter once said. I think sometimes this is overplayed too much by especially by our younger generation and lets face it we all have problems. We all have different backgrounds. We all grew up a differently. But some of us did not choose crime as an outlet for anger. We dont expect society to take responsiility for us as a result either. We took responsibility for ourselves, warts, bumps, problems and all!
It just too easy these days and its a learned pattern of behaviour.

So, Where is the video footage displaying the costumes that they were personally wearing? They obviously have the footage.
I can't see the Plaza being all that busy that day, but they obviously had a vechicle outside the door, whether it was at the front or back door, wherever they left from. It couldn't have been 'that' hard to witness that if you were an employee. I can't see them running away from the plaza with costumes and a bag.
If they were smart, they would have a 3rd party parked at the back of the building, while they entered in the front door and escaped through the back.
But, they are not smart. If the gun was actually real, which it probably wasn't, they should have been able to leave with some jewellery. The employees probably just told him to F-off because they thought it was a joke. Just a couple loser eminems thinking they're cool(to which they probably said, 'dont you think that i'm playin' in a scrawny lispy voice)..
This case does not make any sense to me whatsoever. They shouldn't be that hard to find.
If I was a cop, i'd find them. And I'd probably get away with some police brutality (something our police force should consider doing: It's not like anyone's gonna find out)....
