I'm tired of being blamed by the police when they say not to leave valuables locked in a car - what's next, don't leave valuables locked in your house, you're inviting theft?

Of course it's not a good idea to leave valuables in a car but if you're shopping sometimes you had little choice. Besides, theft is theft - they're still breaking into your car. I'm tired of being a prisoner to the crime in this city.

My car got broken into for 73 cents in parking money - the police told me it was my fault for leaving money in the open. Come on now, 73 damn cents!

wow, thats a lot of thefts.

Lock valuables in your glove compartment. If its not visible chance is yaour car wont get broken into.
LivenTheDream 10/30/2012 4:59:56 AM Report

I'd rather they tell someone to lock their cars and remove their valuables from sight, than raise my taxes 10x so we can have a cop on every corner to be your personal security guard.

C'mon people, grow up, be responsible.

Does the advice work everytime? no! But it works.
B Boy 10/30/2012 7:18:23 AM Report

It's pretty hard to lock Christmas presents in the glove box while shopping....

There's always going to be an excuse where the good people get blamed. We just need a more modern & engaged police model. We need to pressure the police chief and city council more.
LivenTheDream 10/30/2012 7:49:07 AM Report

Constructive criticism is better received from good people who do their best to be part of the solution.

"Out of sight" is not limited to a small glove box.

People who leave keys, wallets, money, and valuable items in plain view; in unlocked vehicles; are "partly" responsible for motivating the thief to check every car he sees.
They are "part" of the problem and whining about the police not solving it is not the solution.

Very well said!!! It's just plain stupid to leave items out like that, the trunk would hold more than the glove box for those who think only glove box and if they see nothing to take they will move along...

To those who feel they shouldn't have to protect their stuff from thieves I agree it's sad that this is what it's come to but we don't leave our tv on the front porch we do in fact secure our stuff inside our homes. And most people also have curtains or blinds to conceal what they have inside so why is it unreasonable to expect you to conceal it in cars, and the police can't be standing guard over every house and car!!

Leave an iPad, purse or wallet in a car, then one of these times it will be gone plain and simple, and why were there valuables in unlocked cars?? I wouldn't even have called the police the beer and bat either, what a waste of my tax dollars lol

Locked or unlocked, if a thief wants to get in, he/she will.

Don't leave things in the open, install alarm, get a huge dog (leave the windows cracked - of course), etc.

Someone needs to catch these guys in the act and take them off the street. My friend Louis once said, "In east Montreal, we take the law into our own hands". He caught 2 theives in action and beat them up with a shovel.
HeyImOnnaBus 10/30/2012 11:06:13 AM Report

With all of the recent vehicle break-ins being reported, I wonder if a few of these thieves are working together.

I live in an apt. building in the east side of town. Sunday night @12:30 I heard slamming noises from the parking lot. I saw a suspicious-looking young person walking briskly towards Trunk Road with a long pry tool of some sort. He hid it under his jacket as he headed towards the road and hopped into a dark gray or green late-model mini-van. It headed east towards Dacey.

I was tempted to call the police, but this happened within a matter of a few minutes and they were long gone. For the lack of details, the police wouldn't be of much help anyways. You'd think there'd be frequent patrols in the high-crime areas where these break-ins are taking place. I didn't hear of any tenants reporting anything damaged or missing the next day, so perhaps this person was scared off.

I don't keep any valuables in my own vehicle, but I keep it locked. In the end it's just as my late father used to say: "A lock only keeps an honest man out".

If we can GET a PETITIONER going to have an alarm like the do acroos the states to have these kids of the streets by 10, Ithink crime rate would go Down ...
