Seen Friday afternoon on Queen Street
Sunday, October 28, 2012 by: Darren Taylor
Trekking across town with a heavy load on your back isn’t something most of us think about doing as we drive home from work on a Friday afternoon.
But that’s what this young man was engaged in, walking alone on Queen Street East near Boundary Road.
Private Shane Beda, based with the 31 Signals Regiment of Hamilton, Ontario, was taking part in a battle fitness test in conjunction with Sault Ste. Marie’s 49th Field Regiment.
He was halfway through a 14-kilometre march when he politely stopped and quickly described his assignment to us.
Beda told us the test began at the Pine Street Armoury and he was on his way back.
The battle fitness test included not only the march, but a 100-metre combat drag test, which in real combat conditions, involves carrying a wounded soldier to safety.
He explained he had about two and a half hours to complete the exercise and had about an hour left to go.
Private Beda is currently a second-year aviation student at Sault College.
To Private Shane Beda and all the other dedicated men and women in the Canadian Forces, whether regulars or reservists - way to go!

If I ever in a position, where I wake up in the night, to a young man with his one arm outstrched, and a gun in the other. I sure hope it is you, or someone like you.
Thank you, for all you are, and all you do, to help keep our country safe. Your family must be very proud of you.
Thank you, and good luck.
