Companies fined $25,000 each for doing work without approval

NEWS RELEASEHydromega Services Inc. and Construction Demathieu and Bard both pleaded guilty to the offence of constructing without the proper approval and permits as required by the Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act.
In April 2011, the Ministry of Natural Resources in Kapuskasing became aware that a diversion channel and partial bridge had been constructed at White Otter Falls on the Kapuskasing River.
The White Otter Falls site is one of four hydro sites being developed by Hydromega Services Inc, with construction carried out by general contractor Construction Demathieu and Bard.
An investigation revealed that the channel and bridge had been constructed without the proper approvals under the Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act that ensure construction is done in an environmentally sound and safe manner.
Subsequent work carried out at the site had the required approvals.
Justice of the Peace Jean-Marie Blier heard the cases in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kapuskasing, on October 10, 2012.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds the public to check with the local ministry office before doing any type of work on Crown or public land.
