It called drug addiction.
chech 10/22/2012 6:26:03 PM Report

So, where are the Police? I mean is this not to the point that we need neighbourhood patrols and/or extra officers. A presence. C'mon are we to be so naive that there are all different people breaking and entering?
Maybe vigalante attitude is what is needed. This is sickening that criminals can violate the safety and security of people's home. I had mine attempted and for 20 years has cost me security system and annual monitoring and I still do not feel secure when I go away. I say let's start hanging the ones that are caught by their cayones on the courthouse grounds and stone them. Maybe that will send a message. Or let's take the monthly Security monitoring cheque we pay for a good night's sleep and give it to the Police to hire more officers. Let's just please do something to stop this.
City Council my question is what the heck are you doing to stop this break and enter and home invasion crimes in the city?
Jamie333 10/22/2012 6:30:27 PM Report

JustMe1234567 10/22/2012 6:34:19 PM Report

I must say for the first time in all my years living in the Soo, I am beginning to feel unsafe in my own home.
And i can't afford an alarm system.

cityhallguy 10/22/2012 6:42:17 PM Report

If you think that anything has changed...Come'on! We just have the internet to bring us up to date! There has always been break and enters, etc... News wasn't as accessible, that's all!
Now murders...that's another topic!
JustMe1234567 10/22/2012 6:44:25 PM Report

About the cops not doing enough...How can the police be everywhere? Look at this list, it's from one end of town to the other. There was a bunch reported on Sunday too.
JustMe1234567 10/22/2012 6:46:11 PM Report

cityhallguy,

No it's getting worse, sure in summer there was break and enters while people were on vacation and stuff. But now there are A LOT MORE, this is getting ridiculous!
jean-paul 10/22/2012 7:28:40 PM Report

Bullets are cheap,50.cents end of problem.
Zarm27 10/22/2012 7:39:10 PM Report

lol the headline is a riot.
geterdun 10/22/2012 7:48:02 PM Report

You might want to check the actual statistics on that city hall guy...what you are saying is that 5 to 6 B and E's happen here every day in our city??? I dont think so..
Remember folks that with job loses, goverment cut backs, or austerity measures there comes higher crime.Even the Mayor the boss at city hall, just said that with regards to the provincial cut of 1 million dollars to O.W. and disibility recipients, there will be an increase in crime. And that hasnt even happened yet.Just wait folks it is going to get way worse before it gets any better.

STREET JUSTICE SOUND FAMILIAR????
If the cops cant take care of the problems in our neighborhoods and city then people will take matters into their own hands and thats a fact.Just read the comments here..... someone is going to get killed here very soon if this keeps up.......THEN WHAT?????? might even be at your house ya never know!!!!!
medsec 10/22/2012 8:32:20 PM Report

The Humane Society has a lot lovely dogs that will protect your home and you, give you unconditional love, if you ask any police enforcement they will tell you to get a dog, win win situation. Maybe not cheaper than an alarm system but much more trustworthy.
moem 10/22/2012 8:35:19 PM Report

Never gonna happen not here, I don't even think that the Soo has anyone dumb enough to shoot someone for break and enter, there's a lot if talk on here, but this isn't the states if you can't shoot am intruder or use deadly force unless your life is in danger so if someone wants to do life in prison to protect their valuables then they have a screw or two loose somewhere, the root of this problem is not bring addressed properly we have no real social programs here to help people with serious addictions and mental health the province has cut money for withdrawal management beds and treatment beds, there are not enough beds for people with mental illness etc, I wouldn't be surprised if per capita we have higher petty crime rate than Toronto, they don't have enough social services there but they certainly have more than we do... Addicts who want help do not get it right away it is a very long process with lots of paperwork and very long waiting lists, I mean really with the addiction problem here why do we not have a treatment centre????
Snowdon 10/22/2012 8:36:33 PM Report

None of you have any statistics right now to say whether anything is higher or lower, so until you do, you're just contributing pointless blathering. It's no better than the kind of hysteria peddled by tabloid rags without anything to substantiate it.

That's what I've come to expect from the comments of any reported crime on Sootoday.
moem 10/22/2012 8:39:29 PM Report

And I think that this is an unusual rash of them, this is typically the worse time of the month bc cheques have been spent, baby bonus( don't think it's actually still called that) is gone and people are looking for money to keep themselves going until cheques are out again, then things will quiet down a bit and the cycle will continue until we do something to fix the real problems
Saultdog 10/22/2012 8:50:52 PM Report

Break and Enters were up 46% in the first 5 months of 2012 compared to the previous year

jean-marie 10/22/2012 8:58:14 PM Report

Moem, you make it sound like everyone who receives baby bonus don't work and are criminals just scraping by... I really hope that's not what your implying...
Flyers08 10/22/2012 10:00:31 PM Report

its not shoot to kill, just a couple knee caps is all it takes! End of story.
nicole1414 10/22/2012 10:01:08 PM Report

medsec, very true!

Maybe we need to look at doubling our police force at night time and possibly have them watching Mac's mart more, considering robberies have been ridiculous there.

What happened to Neighbourhood watch?

Seems like there's an opportunity here for us to do something about it.

I'm sick of hearing stories from friends and coworkers about somebody else's belongings getting stolen. This needs to stop.

moem 10/22/2012 10:29:39 PM Report

Jean- Marie

Not at all what I'm implying, it's more likely than not that the people committing these thefts are impoverished rather than well employed for sure, but I don't think that everyone receiving baby bonus or OW or ODSP are bad or that they are all scraping by and commiting crimes, the baby bonus system has changed and everyone gets the universal child tax credit but the other supplements are certainly based on income and yes the ones that get the maximum are likely just making ends meet if they weren't they wouldn't get the full amount unless they are commiting fraud, it doesn't however mean that they don't work hard it just means that if they are working then they are not really making a decent living wage and that is sad bc as hard as they work they still struggle as many of us do with the constant increases in goods and services today, I'm not putting down anyone, and I don't judge I make my living by helping people get off the streets battle addiction and move forward I know how hard that is I see it all the time, it saddens me that in a country like ours that children live on the streets and go to school hungry, it is unacceptable
bulletcards 10/23/2012 4:41:00 AM Report

@ UrsaMajor

I happen to live in the east end, and I am certainly not a doctor, lawyer, dentist or a rich kid. I have had my house broken into last year. all costs were on me as not enough dollar amount to cover my deductable. new doors and locks to replace. on top of the cost of a security system and upgraded security measures. the biggest price was the sence of safety being lost in my own home. Possesions can be replaced and extra security can be added, but nothing can bring you back that piece of mind after you have been violated. I don't care if it's a doctor, judge, laywer or ben pino. no one should have to suffer that. your comment was very ignorant and I hope you never have to experience such an incident.
SuzyyQ 10/23/2012 8:19:41 AM Report

I ask the same question, what happened to neighbourhood watch? I'm lucky, thus far, that all I've had stolen on my property is lightbulbs. I became my own neighbourhood watch and literally was on a stake-out. If I caught the theif (thieves), I would go as far as jump in my vehicle and follow these idiots and have the police on the phone as well. As for the posters who say they need to feel safe in their own homes, you are right on, on that. Our homes are our sanctuary. As for me, I can't say the same with an idiot, absentminded tenant who just can't seem to grasp the need to close the building door. She has no sense of reality, since B&E's are on the rise in this city. Thank goodness she is moving out without me having to evict her. She is a dumbass who has no concept of security !
BigDaddy 10/23/2012 8:21:44 AM Report

I agree, I think most of this is a result of enhanced media coverage. I'm not saying it's a conspiracy or anything like that but boy oh boy, wait for budget time when Mr. Davis has a big smile on his face.

Things that make you go hmmm...
cityhallguy 10/23/2012 9:46:13 AM Report

all I'm saying is that before the internet, how did we know the stats? Unless you subscribed to the paper, nobody had a clue. The internet has changed all that.
I don't have the stats, but how is anyone to say it's up or down?
There's been times where almost nothing was reported...I guess it all works out in the wash so to speak.
yippi49 10/23/2012 10:47:42 AM Report

boo hoo I have a drug problem so it's not my fault.. give me a break! you know right from wrong . they also know the discipline will be nothing. publish thier names and dress them in pink pookadoted jump suits cleaning the court house lawn so everyone can see them.
geterdun 10/23/2012 3:42:40 PM Report

I guess we have to take care of matters our selves..
