Liberal Leader Bob Rae launches debate on his private member's motion to replace the Indian Act

OTTAWA - Liberal Leader Bob Rae kicked off debate in the House of Commons today on his private member’s motion, M-386, which calls on the federal government to work with First Nations on a nation-to-nation basis to replace the Indian Act.

“First Nations have been very clear -  we must shed the colonial institutions and frameworks that have characterized the Crown-First Nations relationship to date if we want to work together towards a new process,” said Mr. Rae [shown]. “This motion compels the federal government to work in partnership with First Nations to finally resolve the countless long-standing economic and social inequities that affect them.”

The motion, which receives its first hour of debate today, calls on the government to establish a formal nation-to-nation process between First Nations and the Crown to replace the Indian Act with new agreements that fulfill the Crown’s responsibilities to First Nations in a manner consistent with First Nations’ rights, the original Treaty relationships with First Nations upon which Canada was founded, the outstanding obligations and promises on behalf of the Crown to First Nations, and the standards established in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

“As First Nations leaders across the country have stated, the Indian Act remains the most significant obstacle to progress for First Nations communities across Canada,” said Mr. Rae. “While the Conservative government has so far refused to engage in any substantive discussions on the issue, I hope they will take the opportunity that my motion provides to do so.”

Background:

Liberal Leader Bob Rae’s private member’s motion, M-386, is as follows:

"That, in the opinion of the House, the Indian Act is the embodiment of failed colonial and paternalistic policies which have denied First Nations their rights, fair share in resources, fostered mistrust and created systemic barriers to the self-determination and success of First Nations, and that elimination of these barriers requires the government to initiate a formal process of direct engagement with First Nations within three months of passage of this motion, on a nation-to-nation basis, which focuses on replacing the Indian Act with new agreements based on: a) the Constitutional, Treaty, and inherent rights of all First Nations; b) the historical and fiduciary responsibilities of the Crown to First Nations; c) the standards established in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the principle of free, prior, and informed consent; d) respect, recognition, reconciliation and support for First Nations; e) partnership and mutual accountability between the Crown and First Nations; and f) stability and safety of First Nations; and that this process be completed within two years before reporting with a series of concrete deliverables for the government to act upon."

The last politician I would trust to deal with first nations issues is Bob Rae. There comes a time and I believe it is finally here that Canadian taxpayers get what they deserve and that is to get this "albatross" finally removed from around their proverbial neck and that is the indian act.

What happened to the plan that these natives wanted when they were begging for independence ? But why ? They would rather be treated like they are a separate nation, within Canada, with all the benefits of a welfare state.

I believe it's time that this majority Conservative government take the bull by the horns and deals with this whole matter in a way that is fair to all hard working, tax paying Canadians.

I just hope that Harper has the where with all to do what is just, fair and reasonable for all concerned. I believe that Harper would be wise to most definitely keep in mind those Canadians that supported him and voted him in.

As far as Bob Rae is concerned, sorry, but he is definitely not going to spear head the solving of this seemingly endless and perplexing situation.

As far as I know "these natives" had independence before the Europeans came here!! And I assume you are including "these natives" in your comment about hard working Canadians since they work as well. They had their land taken away and were put in residential schools and forced onto reserves, there are reserves in this country that have conditions comparable to third world countries and that is NOT acceptable. Of course your next thought might be that they were compensated for land by way of their yearly treaty monies, though this is a joke as done are collecting a couple of bucks every year and still others get a bag of flour and a cast iron pan. They didn't invite us here, and they suffered through things that most of us could never comprehend, the trauma suffered by the ancestors of the first nations people living today get passed down through generations, the children born today are still suffering, I would like to see fairness for everyone but we still have and always will have a debt to pay to those who être here first!! The racism I see today against first nations people is unfathomable and it often appears as though society feels they are the last group of people left who it is acceptable to be racist against.......

Are you willing to suffer the atrocities that the first nations people did to get it?? It was their land they were here first!! We have immigration laws now and policies and we work to keep illegal immigrants out of our country but you might say illegal immigration began in 1492

Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual). ---Ayn Rand

Replace the Indian ACt?...... What if they end up replacing it with something that is worse for the Indian?
