Sports rewind: The week that was in local sports
Monday, October 22, 2012 by: Brad Coccimiglio
Hockey stories were among the lead sports stories this week in Sault Ste. Marie as the Soo Greyhounds and Soo Thunderbirds were both in action locally while the Soo North Stars returned to Great North Midget League action after a tournament win in London.
In what turned out to be the big story of the week in local sports, the Greyhounds received word that they would be short another defenceman for eight games.
The Greyhounds saw action in a three-game homestand during the week that saw Sudbury, Belleville and Guelph all come to town.
The Thunderbirds continued their lengthy nine-game homestand against the Elliot Lake Bobcats at the Essar Centre.
The North Stars hit the road to take on the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves.
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan has also been a hockey hotspot as both the Soo Eagles (North American Hockey League) and Lake Superior State Lakers (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) saw action.
The Eagles swept a pair of games at home against Johnstown before picking up a win and a shootout loss one week later at Johnstown.
The Lakers split a pair of games against the Michigan Tech Huskies before picking up a split in Bemidji, Minnesota against Bemidji State.
Away from the arenas it was also a busy weekend locally.
Algoma University hosted the OCAA Cross Country Provincial Championships. Saturday’s event saw good weather and lots of hardware handed out.
