Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, governor general of Canada, on following the death of the Honourable Lincoln Alexander
OTTAWA - My wife, Sharon, and I are saddened by the loss of the Honourable Lincoln Alexander, former lieutenant governor of Ontario.
Mr. Alexander contributed so much to Ontario and to Canada during his lifetime, reflecting the highest ideals of service to our country.
From his time spent in the Canadian Forces, to his period as a member of Parliament, to his role as lieutenant governor, he devoted his life to improving this country for all Canadians and he opened the doors for others to follow.
In so many ways, he was a pioneer, and his contributions to this nation will long be remembered.
On behalf of all Canadians, Sharon and I offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

OPP Commissioner comments - Passing of Hon. Lincoln Alexander
ORILLIA - Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Chris Lewis released the following statement on the passing of the Hon. Lincoln M. Alexander, former Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario and Honorary Commissioner of the OPP.
On behalf of the men and women of the Ontario Provincial Police, I am saddened by the passing of Honorary Commissioner, the Hon. Lincoln Alexander.
His decades of service to the people of Hamilton and the province of Ontario, and the dignity with which he carried himself - including many occasions as Honorary Commissioner of the OPP - serve as a lasting tribute and provide continuing inspiration for every member of our organization.
I'm reminded of his comments as we marked his 80th birthday in 2002.
Mr. Alexander said: "Being an Ontario Provincial Police officer is a wonderful career opportunity for today's young people. Any job can be dangerous…but it is a remarkable opportunity for young people if they want a productive life."
I couldn't agree more.
The OPP provincial headquarters building in Orillia was aptly named in his honour when it was officially opened in 1995.
It serves as a remainder to all who pass through its doors of the physical, intellectual and ethical stature of this man; his many civil rights, equality and humanitarian accomplishments; and the unflinching and empathetic support he provided to the OPP.
We offer our sincerest condolences to Mr. Alexander's family and our immense gratitude for his service.
