Volunteer receives Order of the Red Cross

Canadian Red Cross volunteer and Sault Ste. Marie resident, Jean Wyatt, was recognized for her volunteer work on Wednesday evening at the Canadian Red Cross Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.

Jean received the Order of Red Cross which is a highly prestigious national award.

Jean is the 234th person to receive this award in the past 103 years.

Jean began her service as a volunteer driver, helping clients who could not drive themselves and then became involved with the disaster management team.

Her training allowed her to help in local, domestic and international emergencies including relief efforts in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina.

Jean is currently Branch Council president and sits on the Northern Regional Council.

Sault Ste. Marie and area resident featured in Canadian Red Cross photo exhibition thanking volunteers

The Canadian Red Cross photo exhibit, Hometown Heroes:  Ordinary People, Extraordinary Volunteers, will be on display in the lobby of the Civic Centre for public viewing from Monday, October 22 to Friday, October 26, 2012.

The exhibition, which was unveiled at Queen's Park in April, includes 30 portraits of volunteers who are involved in various Red Cross programs and services - everything from disaster response and community health to administration and governance.

Jean Wyatt, a Sault Ste. Marie resident and distinguished volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross, is featured in the photo exhibit.

Also included is the Disaster Management Team from Blind River, Ontario.

All portraits were taken by Toronto-based photographer, and fellow Red Cross volunteer, Johan Hallberg-Campbell, who travelled across the province with the Canadian Red Cross to photograph volunteers in their communities.
