Kateri: The first indigenous person from North America to be canonized
The Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee acknowledges that many First Nations citizens are getting ready for the first indigenous person from North America to be canonized by Pope Benedict XVI this Sunday.
“With the long history that some of our citizens have had with the Roman Catholic Church, it is a long‐awaited recognition of the role that Kateri Tekakwitha played in being a spiritual role model and now a Saint,” says Grand Council Chief Madahbee. “It is well‐known that some First Nations people talk to their ancestors so now the faithful will have a special Saint to rely on.”
Kateri Tekakwitha, also known as the “Lily of the Mohawks”, was born in 1656 in the Mohawk community of Ossernenon and served in a Catholic mission near present day Kahnawa:ke.
Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1980, and she has been honoured by the Catholic Church as the patroness of ecology, nature, and the environment.
The Anishinabek Nation established the Union of Ontario Indians as its secretariat in 1949.
The UOI is a political advocate for 39 member communities across Ontario, representing approximately 55,000 people.
The Union of Ontario Indians is the oldest political organization in Ontario and can trace its roots back to the Confederacy of Three Fires, which existed long before European contact.

chichimawn 10/20/2012 7:53:49 PM ReportGreat news and it's about time! :)
Sera 10/20/2012 8:31:21 PM ReportI am spiritual but not religious by any means....but I have to say that this is wonderful for those who believe in this way of life!!!!!
Dead End Kid 10/21/2012 12:04:08 AM ReportThe First Nation people of North America were forced by the white man to adopt their christen beliefs. Because of this, today the North American Indian has lost much of it's culture and language. The white man introduced a better way of life to the Indians but instead of sharing their way of life, they stole the land that the Indians lived and hunted on.
Now all these years later, the catholic church is set to canonize the first indigenous North American person. How flattering that must be to the first nation people! We as a nation can never make it up to the Indian people for the damage our forefathers bestowed upon them. I say to the Catholic church, stay away, most Indian people do not want to have anything to do with you or your religion.

So the celebrations our Native people are having all over Canada and parts of the US today should be cancelled ?
Because YOU feel guilty ?
The Mohawk and Algonquin nations have been lobbying for this recognition for many years.
Barf breath 10/21/2012 8:37:51 PM ReportDead End Kid.. The perpetuation of resentment is a dead end
Dead End Kid 10/21/2012 10:09:29 PM Reportjimssm, I'm happy for the first nation people that are pleased with this event but I would like to know why people do not wish to be reminded of the truth about what really happened not that long ago. I am all for the truth of our past and I'm not going to hide from it or sugar coat what really happened. Lest we forget, the past can be repeated.
Linkeed 10/22/2012 8:52:03 AM ReportJust no.
This isn't a good thing at all. The Pope has made clear that he does not, in fact, believe in the mixing various religions; and does not believe in establishing a community between sects such as Christianity, Judadism, and Islam.
Think that's a good thing? Well okay.
Be CONSISTENT. Stop beating around the issue whenever it looks fashionable. Is this woman Christian? Sure; but she's also very likely to have Aborginal spirituality in the mix too, and no one will remember her for that because of this. In addition, as said, the pope himself wouldn't have canonized her if he thought people would think of her dual spirituality in the first place.
Extremely sketchy.
Just imho.
Dead End Kid 10/22/2012 6:24:06 PM ReportVery well said and most thought provoking Linkeed.
