Sault ranks second in Ontario in entrepreneur study
SAULT STE. MARIE - If you’re looking for somewhere to live or start a business, Sault Ste. Marie is a pretty darn good place to do it.
And the companies already here are displaying much confidence in the future of the community.
These were the findings in a recent survey published in The Financial Post, the business section of The National Post newspaper.
The report, titled Communities in Boom, ranked the Sault second in the province and 23rd in all of Canada.
The survey, conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), was released in October.
It looked at 103 cities across the country with a population of 25,000 or more.
CFIB gathered data on things like business owner optimism, entrepreneur success, quality of life and the perception of municipal government policy.
In the report, Sault Ste. Marie scored particularly high on life satisfaction, with 91 percent of respondents very satisfied or satisfied in this regard.
Equally significant, the city climbed in its entrepreneurial ranking since the 2011 CFIB survey, jumping from 49th to 23rd in Canada.
“We know our community has competitive advantages and quality of life that are tough to match, but it’s always nice and reassuring when these positions are backed up by a third party,” said Don Mitchell, president and board chair of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corp. “As reflected in the survey, business support programs and economic development efforts of the past are paying dividends today.”

nicole1414 10/18/2012 1:07:32 PM ReportThis absolutely shocks me... am I alone in this?
cashcab 10/18/2012 1:22:25 PM ReportI guess thats why our population has been in a steady decline for the past 30 years. LOL for sure.
Moonshiner 10/18/2012 1:33:46 PM ReportWow ,If thats the case, the rest of this Province must be alot worse than anyone thought!!!
PunkBob 10/18/2012 1:58:39 PM ReportThese were phone poll questions. only the happy people answer them.
Tom_Bom 10/18/2012 2:03:50 PM ReportWow our country is worse off than I thought lol.
stuey 10/18/2012 2:33:50 PM ReportI've thought this for quite awhile now.
When you look at the crap weather the rest of north america gets, we get off lightly. And when you consider the cost of food and housing, we've got it made. I visit the maritimes every summer and as much as I might want to move there I know it would cost a lot more. I'll visit there yearly and continue to live here. As a retiree it just makes more sense.
Wheels17 10/18/2012 3:28:46 PM ReportI am questioning on who actually did this survey and how they know that this information is 100% accurate. Lately, employment has taken a big hit with the closure of St. Mary's Paper, Transcom and other places of business. We need to get something that employs lots of people and doesn't get affected by the US economy.
PteNelson 10/18/2012 4:14:58 PM ReportThe sault is garbage. Whoever was in charge ofthis survey seriously needs to reevaluate their criteria. There are no job opportunities here and the population is steadily declining. Why?
Because people are realizing just how bad it is
Stevie-E 10/18/2012 4:20:49 PM ReportDid anyone read the article before posting or did you guys use this as yet another excuse to cry the blues why you have no work?
IT SAID ENTREPRENEUR STUDY...and I have seen a lot of places start up and then fail (not because of lack of business, but poor management of finances).
People think it's easy starting up their own business but for those with no clue on how to run a business or any sort of business acumen, their dreams are shot down before they even begin.
There are a lot of people with big dreams and good intentions but don't want to put the time in when it counts; however, due to our proximity to the US and access to government funding, it IS possible to be a success in the Soo!
Working Man 10/18/2012 4:53:57 PM ReportYeah Right!!!!!!!
People are satisfied with the quality of life here because it is so cheap to live here! They can afford to save more money and go on vacations every year assuming they have a decent job and have a significant other. It's true.
Yes, you can start a cleaning business and be a success. You can start an Italian restaurant or a pizza joint and be a success here. You can start a landscaping company and be a success in the Sault. You don't even have to be good at what you do!!! It's true!
You can take advantage of people's stupidity here with your lack of skill.
It is 'possible' to be a success in the Sault. But as far as jobs; Even Timmins has more jobs than the Sault! They have over double the amount of jobs as the Sault does.
Barf breath 10/18/2012 4:55:22 PM ReportSurvey says, poppycock
geterdun 10/18/2012 5:00:12 PM ReportThis is propaganda by the economic development to some how justfy their huge salaries and jobs....For those living in the real world we know that the Soo is not the place to come and look for work......unless you are looking for a part time job at minimum wage....this once vibrant community has been led down a path of destruction by those at city hall with their own agendas.......
All you have to do is compare the Soo to other communities in the North like Sudbury,Thunder Bay, North Bay,The Soo is way behind and losing ground to these other communities every day. And all the blame should be put were it belongs on the shoulders of those running this place city council.....They have their own agends and bringing good paying jobs and growing the economy is not one of them this is clear by their actions.....Sault Ste Marie the last one to leave turn out the lights.oh wait dont bother the lights will go out on there own because of piss poor electrical infrastructure anyway.LMAO!!!!!!
PteNelson 10/18/2012 7:35:09 PM ReportYou dont need to not have work to realize this place is an economical embarrassment
speed7 10/18/2012 8:13:36 PM Report"CFIB gathered data on things like business owner optimism, entrepreneur success, quality of life and the perception of municipal government policy". Huh?
Oh I see he that the Elite Dining Club is mentioned here and a big thumbs up photo with the mention.
What did this study look at all the small buisnesses? We have far too many of them. We need bigger industries. City council would rather prefer sault composed of mostly all small buisnesses, nothing more. I agree the sault has competatitive advantages but I dont think we are truly taking advantage of them. Elite Dining doesnt come cheap and there is such a thing as damage control and media twisting and perception. Nice Try Diner's Club.
outcrop 10/19/2012 8:34:02 AM ReportComplain, complain and more complaints. We should be proud of our City Way to go Sault Ste. Marie.
speed7 10/19/2012 2:22:43 PM Reportoutcrop, I disagree, know one is truly complaining. Everyone loves the quality of life here. Just that we would like to see our city bieng nurtured . I dont see any city or government officials doing that accept for David O. I know I am going to get flamed for saying that but I'll take the risk. It's factual and all on his web site. Overspent or not, we were lucky to get alot of things with him. Their seems to be no real concern to advance this city further. Meanwhile everyone around us is? That is where the true concerns are? If opinions are not voiced nothing happens.
geterdun 10/19/2012 9:45:53 PM ReportHEY outcrop were do you live Sudbury??????LOL.....the city is growing alright.........the problem is weve run out of room for solar panels and windmills.....LOL.......
riverman 10/21/2012 12:42:06 AM Reportgeterdun:
Why do you choose to live in a city for which you hold such obvious contempt?
